Running Swift Kennel Sled Dogs
Training Log 8
February 16th, 2003
After all that freezing rain, we got a few days of really nice snowfall, which covered the trails. Now they are even better than before, because they have a solid base, and about 8 inches of fresh snow on top. I couldn't wait to get the dogs out on it, as it had been almost 2 weeks since I had last run them. So, yesterday I took 14 of them out for a short run with the atv, since Manny had to go to work later that day. What a nice run!! We did 4 head on passes and the dogs handled them great. I had to keep them down to 15mph, cause they sure were feeling good and would've gone faster had I let them. I'm really afraid of injuries, and with the possibility of having the Two Rivers 200 in 3 weeks, I didn't want to take any chances.

I'm happy to say that all made the run with no problems, including Lovey. She hadn't run in 2 weeks and being a sprint dog (from Daryl & Dori Hollingsworth), I wasn't sure how she'd do in a mid distance team at that slower pace. I shouldn't have worried though, because after a few miles, she seemed to realize the difference and settled into a beautiful trot. We went up to the hayfields again for a 15 mile run, and the dogs came in looking great. I'll be running again tomorrow, maybe with the sled to get a longer run. I don't know though, I may have to take the atv again in order to get a bigger team run, since time is really a factor at this point. Regardless, I have to get the run in, because between volunteering for the Quest, school and Manny's work, there isn't a whole lot of time for training. That's ok though. These guys have a solid base on them, so the important thing now is to just keep them in shape with NO injuries. I will try to get some extra camping runs in before the TR 200, just for more practice. Keep your fingers crossed that we can at least do one race this season!!! Ha ha ha ha!!
