[Forget-Me-Not]
chapter VI

Youre in the arms of an angel, may you find some comfort here

There was literally a transformation overnight. She came down the next morning with no black make-up, and her clothes covered her. She wore a blue tee shirt, and jean shorts, and a light zip-up sweater. They all looked at her, surprised to see her, especially to see her normal. She sat down at the dining room table, making eye contact only with Zac, whom she sat next to.

Zo녔 Their mother said quietly, not having expected to see her at all, let alone like she used to be. She kept her eyes cast downward.

Im sorry she said, almost inaudibly. Im sorry for everything. Zac covered her hand with his and squeezed gently.

It was a few days later, and Zachary was changing his week old daughter. They were going home the next day; the babys room was finished. Zo came in quietly. Shed changed so much in four days time. She was doing well in rehab; no more drugs for her, ever. She watched her brother and her niece, and smiled a little.

Shes so small, she said quietly. Zac turned to face her, Dawn in his arms.

Yeah; she was born a few weeks early. Shes small, but healthy. He smiled. Zo came closer, and looked at the little girl.

Shes got your eyes, she said. Zac unintentionally looked down at his little sisters stomach. You can stop worrying. He looked up at her face. Im not pregnant, Zac.

Good, he replied quietly, and relieved. Im glad to hear that. Youre sure? He asked, putting Dawn on his shoulder and gently rubbing her back. Zo nodded.

The blood test results came back negative, and she dropped her eyes. I got my period, so

Thats great news. She looked at him oddly. I mean, that youre not pregnant, not that you got She smiled.

I know what you meant, Zachary. She looked at the baby in his arms. Can I hold her?

Of course you can, youre her Aunt. He replied. She smiled, and he carefully transferred Dawn into her arms. She smiled wide now.

Hi there, Dawn Marie, she said, cradling the baby in her arms. Zac watched, a soft smile on his lips, and a feeling inside that he couldnt begin to explain.

Youll make a great mother someday, Zo. He said softly. She looked at him, and swallowed against the sudden lump in her throat. She didnt need to say Thank You; it was in her eyes. And she knew by the look in his eyes that he was sincere. After a few minutes Dawn started to get fussy, and cry a bit.

I think she knows Im not her daddy, Zo said, looking at Zac with a smile. She handed the baby to him, supporting her head; he took her in his arms, holding her carefully to his chest. She liked it there, as had his son, and it only took a few seconds for her to quiet down.

Shes definitely going to be a Daddys Girl. She said; her brother looked at her and smiled.

Good. Very good.

Thank you, Zac. She said sincerely.

You dont have to thank me, Zo. I did what any brother would do for his sister. I didnt want to lose you I dont ever want to lose you. He said quietly in return.

I love you, Zachary Walker.

I love you, Zo Genevieve. He said, looking at her with an expression of open honesty on his face that she reciprocated in her eyes. I always have; I always will.

(approximately 5 months later)

Zo stood in silence. She hadnt been here since she was, what, twelve? She wanted to say something to him, but she didnt know what to say. What do you say to a grey marble stone with your brothers name on it?

I miss your face, she said with tears in her eyes. Im sorry, for everything Ive done. I know I messed up big time, and I promise, Ill spend the rest of my life making up for it. Her hair blew gently in the wind. Zac told me once that I could still love you; that I could always love you She couldnt stop the tears falling from her eyes.

I love you, Taylor. She said softly. She kissed the rose she held in her hand and carefully placed it on the snow-covered ground beneath his name, where her tears had fallen and joined it. The December snow started to fall again as she walked back to her car. It was time to go home and spend Christmas Eve with the remainder of her beautiful family.

Merry Christmas, Zo called as she entered the warm, familiar Hanson home. It smelled like pumpkin pie, and turkey, and pine needles; something drifted in the air that smelled like cinnamon.

Hey, hey, Isaac said, coming into the foyer as she was hanging her scarf and coat on a hanger.

I didnt miss anything, did I? She asked, hugging him and kissing his cheek.

Only Zac making a fool out of himself, he answered. She rolled her eyes.

Thats nothing new. She said with a smile. He put his arm around her shoulders, and walked with her into the living room. Marie was sitting in the armchair, her stomach somewhat large. She was almost six months pregnant.

Hey Marie, she said. Howre you and the Little One doing? She motioned to her sister-in-laws stomach.

Were both good, Zo. She smiled at her. You look great. Zo smiled, a little embarrassed, and looked down at the floor. Not even thirty seconds later Zac came back into the living room, followed by Rebecca and Taylor; he had now five-month-old Dawn in his arms. The baby was putting her hand on her fathers mouth, and he was blowing raspberries in her palm. She giggled, pulled her hand away for a few seconds, and then did it again. Zo laughed.

Very cute, Zac, she said. He smiled at her; he pulled the babys hand away so he could speak, and she screeched in protest.

Da! She squealed, slapping his chest.

Shes spoiled, Rebecca said with a grin.

I dont spoil our children, Zac countered with a who me? look on his face and a grin.

How old is she now? Zo asked, tickling the little girls belly and grinning.

Five months, Zac answered, two weeks, and five days. Zo looked at him with her eyebrows raised. But whos keeping track?

Shes getting big, she said. And even more gorgeous.

What about me? Taylor asked, looking up at her.

Youre very handsome, she said. Every time she saw little Taylor, she couldnt help but think of her brother. He looked exactly like the younger pictures of her brother, Taylor Very handsome, Taylor, she said sincerely, putting a hand on his head. Zac and Rebecca smiled at each other.

Da! Dawn screeched suddenly, slapping Zac right in the face. Everyone laughed, even Zac.

Hey kid, take it easy. Thats my cheek youre smacking. In response she screeched, Da! Da! Dada! slapping his chest and back at the same time to each da.

Wheres Jordan and Danny? Zo asked anyone who knew.

Downstairs, playing the Playstation. Mackenzie answered. I gave it to them to play with after Zac kicked my ass on it. He said; Zachary grinned.

You shouldve heard him bitching, Zac said, still grinning. Right on cue, Dawn slapped him in the mouth. They all laughed again.

Thatll teach you to swear in front of her, Rebecca grinned. He just looked at her, unsuccessfully fighting a grin of his own.

I just noticed Avery started, sitting beside Bobby on the couch, holding his hand. This is the first Christmas weve all spent together in a long time.

I like it, Jessica commented.

Me too, Amanda added, now hugging Isaac. She looked up at him. Daddy, when are we gonna open presents?

After dinner and desert. Her grandmother answered from the doorway with a smile.

They ate dinner, and ended up opening presents during desert.

Hows college going? Zac asked Zo, leaning towards her as the kids tore open presents from the aunts and uncles, and grandparents, a plate of pumpkin pie on his lap.

Really good. Not straight As, but Im doing the best I can.

Good. He replied. He watched Becca, sitting on the floor with Dawn, who seemed to like the wrapping paper better than the presents. He smiled.

It got to where there seemed to be no more presents left under the tree, and the adults picked up all the wrapping paper after opening their gifts to one another.

Look, theres another one! Jordan exclaimed suddenly. He went under the tree and pulled out the small rectangular package.

What does it say? Walker asked him.

It says He turned the package over, his twin brother standing behind him and looking over his shoulder. It has Aunt Zos name on it. He said finally.

My name? She asked, a little surprised.

Yep, it does. Danny confirmed. He took it from Jordan and gave it to their aunt. Zac and Walker shared a look between the two of them. She held the relatively small package, and opened it carefully.

A video tape? She said aloud. Isaac, Jess, Avie, and Mac had no idea, and their mother had somewhat of an idea of what it was.

Put it in the VCR. Zac told her.

What is it? She asked him.

Watch it and see. Their father replied.

Everyone sat down in the living room, as the television was turned on and the old tape was put into the old VCR. No one but Zachary and Walker knew about this tape, so everyone else there was stricken in silence. Zo brought a shaking hand to cover her mouth as tears began to fill her eyes. Her father was behind the camera, so his voice was on the tape, but he wasnt visible. In the first clip she had to be at least a little under a year old. She was sitting on Taylors lap, pounding on the keyboard; he was laughing. He was about sixteen. He turned to look at the camera, smiling, his hair pulled back in a ponytail.

Shes definitely got a career in music in her future, he said; their father laughed from behind the camera. Taylor looked back to little Zo, and then back at the camera again. Shes better at this than I am. Another laugh from their father; Taylor laughed too.

They sat there for a little over an hour in silence, watching that tape. There was clip after clip of Taylor with Zo, whether it was only the two of them or many of their siblings with them. The last clip is what Zo actually remembered parts of. They were at the beach Taylor was in the water with her, and she was obviously swimming, or trying to swim to her brother.

Is she doing it? They heard Walker ask from behind the video camera.

Come on, Zo Taylor coached as she swam towards him. Youve almost got it. She had to be four. Youre doing it! They heard him say; they watched him grinning. Zo giggled excitedly on the tape.

Daddy! She called. I can do it!

Youre almost there Taylor said encouragingly. You did it, Zo! He said happily; he picked her up out of the water as she finally reached him. She giggled, and the camera zoomed in closer. Taylor was smiling as he held her up in the air; she hugged him around the neck.

I did it, Taywer! She said excitedly. I did it!

Im so proud of you! He told her, hugging her back, and kissing her wet head. He never had any idea how much those words meant to her.

There was a little bit more footage of them at the beach, building sand castles and splashing around in the surf and shallow water, and then it stopped. Nobody spoke for a pair of minutes. Zo sat staring at the now blank screen, tears falling down her cheeks. She finally looked up at her father and Zac from where she sat on the floor in front of the television.

Where did you get this? She asked quietly.

Dad and I found it when we were going through some old home movies the other day. I remembered what you told me about not remembering He didnt say any more about the conversation he and his little sister had had five months ago; it had remained between them.

He didnt tell me why, but your brother wanted to find this tape. Their father said.

You have no idea how much this means to me, Zac more tears rolled down her cheeks. He moved from his spot on the arm of the couch, and hugged her tightly; everyone watched the display of love between these two siblings.

Thank you so much, she whispered to him.

I love you, Zo Genevieve. He said softly, kissing her head. And he loved you more than you know. She cried a little harder.

I love you too, Zachary Walker. She said back quietly through her tears. No matter what happened, I always did. I always will.
