chapter III

Youre in the arms of an angel, may you find some comfort here

(July 4, 2016)

Avery came through the sliding patio doors, out to the back where the rest of her family was, holding a young mans hand. Her family knew him, and they knew his name. Hed been absent from their last family get together because he felt as though he would have been intruding on a personal matter. He wouldnt have been, but hed told Avery that he wasnt officially part of the family until they were married.

Zac? She said, and he turned around to face her.

Hey! He hugged her. Im glad you made it.

Why wouldnt I? It was a rhetorical question, so he didnt really need to answer. He outstretched a hand to the man she was with.

Hows it going, Zac?

Not bad, Bobby. How about yourself? Zac asked in return. Bobby looked at Avery and smiled.

Real good. He answered. Zac grinned; he knew something was going on.

Hows Rebecca? She asked.

Very pregnant. He answered. Shes due in about three weeks, he said.

Ill find her and talk to her. She said. In the process of nodding, he noticed something on her hand. He grabbed her hand and carefully pulled it up. The diamond ring glittered in the sunlight.

Avie? He asked, a smile on his face and laughter in his eyes.

We got engaged a couple of weeks ago, she said quietly, but excitedly. Dont say anything though, I want to tell everybody. He nodded.

Im so happy for you, he said, hugging her. He looked at Bobby. Both of you. Becca decided to come up to them at that moment.

Avery, she said with a smile. I havent seen you since March.

Wow, she said, looking at Rebeccas stomach. May I? She asked, eyebrows raised.

Of course, she replied. Avery stepped away from Bobby and placed a hand on Rebeccas stomach. She felt around for a minute or two.

Oh my gosh, she grinned. She kicked!

Shes been doing it all week. She said smiling.

Ill be back to visit with you, I just wanna get around and see everyone.

Oh dont worry about it. Becca turned and said hi to Bobby, and they were on their way to see the rest of the family. Zac took his wifes hand and kissed the back of it; she smiled at him, and seemed to hesitate for a moment before she spoke.

Zac, Ive been having contractions since last night, she said.

But youre not due for another three weeks. He replied, his face becoming solemn and worried.

I know. Its nothing to be worried about; I called Dr. Aldrich last night.

Becca, honey, why didnt you tell me? He had both of her hands now.

I know youve had a lot on your mind lately, being worried about Zo녔

If anything doesnt feel right, you come and tell me. Okay? She nodded. He took her face in his hands and kissed her lips softly, gently stroking her cheeks with his thumbs.

Get a room. Jessica said, grinning. Zac turned towards her, his arm around the small of Rebeccas back.

We would, but I cant do much. He said. I dont think our daughter would be too happy seeing a

Zachary! Jess shouted with a disgusted face, and laughing at the same time. Zac laughed, and his wife slapped his chest playfully.

I cant exactly get on top either he said, gesturing to her belly, still grinning.

Zachary Walker Hanson, Becca said, laughing.

Thanks, Zac; thats not exactly a mental picture I wanted in my head, Jess said, grinning at her brother. She walked in the patio doors, leaving her brother and his wife to laugh lightly as his teasing his sister. He looked around at all of his family, his smile fading.

Shes not here, is she? Becca said quietly, gently rubbing his back with the hand of the arms she had around him. He looked into her light brown eyes with sorrow and regret in his own, and shook his head slightly.

I kind of knew she wouldnt be, he said quietly. Ike warned me

Hey, she said softly. Youre making the effort, both of you, thats what counts. She kissed him. She changed the subject and mood, saying lightly, Im going to go see what kind of trouble our son is getting into. She smiled at him and he smiled back; she tapped his butt as she passed by him to go into the house.

Zo took the cocaine that Jimmy handed her, sitting in his bed with the sheets wrapped around her naked body. She scraped it across a small mirror, and sniffed it. She felt sorry, for a split second, and it passed. They pushed her to do this

Youre gonna party tonight, right? He asked, kissing her neck.

Mmm-hmm, she replied, putting her arms around him. Did she really want this? It didnt matter; shed be too high to care in a few minutes

The Hanson family stood in the large backyard watching the incredibly amazing display of fireworks. Although, it wasnt the same without Taylor, it never had been Zac stood with his arm around his wife and their son at his side; Isaac stood beside his wife, each of them with a six-year-old boy on their hip and Amanda in front of them. Their parents stood nearby, arms around each other. Avery stood with Bobby; Mackenzie and Jessica stood by each other, having no significant others like their siblings. Zo, was absent, as usual.

Dad, little Taylor said. Pick me up; I cant see. Zac bent down and hoisted up the young boy, placing him on his shoulders. Taylor smiled wide, and his parents smiled at each other as well.

Wow Uncle Zac, arent the fireworks pretty? His niece said to him. He smiled at her.

You bet they are, sweetheart. She went back to hugging her fathers side. They all watched in awe

The fireworks lasted well over and hour. Jordan had fallen asleep on Isaacs shoulder, Danny on Maries shoulder, and Taylor was falling asleep on Zacs head.

Hey big guy, Zac said, carefully lifting his son up and off of his shoulders. Time for bed.

That was the best Ive seen in years. Mackenzie said.

Tell me about it, Marie replied. That display was amazing.

So it takes fireworks to get all my children together, huh? Their mother asked smiling, arms around their father, smiling.

Any time you want us, Ma, you got us. Isaac said; she smiled.

Daddy? Amanda said, and yawned. Where am I gonna sleep?

You, little girl, are going to sleep in your Aunt Zos old room, with your brothers. She nodded, rubbing her eyes sleepily.

Come on, sweetie, Diana said. Grandma will take you up to bed. She nodded again, taking her grandmothers hand, and letting her lead her into the house and down the hallway near her own bedroom, where Zo used to sleep.

In less than twenty minutes all three of Isaac and Maries children were asleep. Taylor was asleep in what used to be Mackenzies room, on a small air mattress, Zac and Rebecca in a larger bed on the other side of the room. Zachary was lying on his side beside Rebecca with his hand on her large stomach; the baby was kicking like crazy.

Shes on a roll, he said quietly with a grin.

We may end up having her a lot earlier than expected. She said. Im still having contractions.

Do you want me to take you to the hospital? He felt her shaking her head on the pillow next to him.

No; my water hasnt broken yet, she replied.

Are you sure you dont want me to take you? He tucked her brown hair behind her ear. She nodded.

Im exhausted, she said, starting to fall asleep already. He leaned over and kissed her softly on the lips.

Night, honey.

Night

I love you. He whispered.

Love you too, she replied, and fell asleep shortly afterward.

Unlike Marie, Isaac was a light sleeper. He was the one who heard someone fumbling with the lock at two in the morning, as he and his wife were spending the night on the pullout bed from the couch. He glanced at Marie, and carefully got up. He went to the front door and unlocked it; Zo was on the other side. She practically fell into him. He could smell the alcohol on her.

Whoa He caught her. He kept his voice down, Tell me you didnt drive home like this She looked up at him drunkenly, shaking her head dizzily. Come on, kid, he said quietly, pulling her in and closing and relocking the door. She walked three steps and stumbled; she was lucky he had hold of her or she would have fallen.

Dont you dare tell Mom and Dad, she said; her breath reeked of alcohol. He didnt say anything.

Lets just get you to your room. He said quietly, trying not to wake his wife. It took him at least five minutes just to get her successfully up the stairs. She looked awful.

Make the rooms stop spinning she said closing her eyes; they were almost to her room. Im not feeling so good He stopped, holding one of her arms around the back of his neck.

Tell me now if youre gonna throw-up; Ill take you to the bathroom. She swallowed hard and nodded. He led her into the bathroom, none too quietly. She dropped down onto the floor, lifted the toilet lid and seat, hung her head over the toilet, and puked. Isaac turned his head away in disgust. Without warning, his mind flashed back to a time fourteen years earlier; Taylor had made it up here with his help, and hed said nearly exactly the same thing to him, and Taylor ended up in there puking as well. The memory hurt.

The door to the room next to the bathroom opened, and Zac stepped out, closing the door quietly behind him. He stood in the doorway of the bathroom.

Whats the matter with her? Zac asked, squinting in the light.

Im sick, she said snottily between puking.

Shes drunk, Isaac answered.

Thats wonderful, Zac said, growing somewhat angry. What the hell were you thinking? He asked her angrily.

Shh, Isaac hushed. People are sleeping. And I dont want Mom and Dad to come up here.

What? Shes drunk, Isaac. Shes eighteen years old; legal drinking age is twenty-one. I think Mom and Dad should know.

F*ck you, Zachary. She said, her head still hanging in the toilet bowl.

Let me handle this

What the hell is wrong with you?! Zac asked loudly and angrily. The last time we covered for someone he died!

You sonofabitch, he said quietly. How could you even say that?

Obviously youve forgotten, or maybe you just dont care. Maybe you wanna go through it again. He said heatedly.

Dont you think I miss him too?! Huh? Dont you think I lose sleep at night? Dont you think Ive been beating myself up for the last fourteen years? Isaac returned. Youre not the only one who feels guilty. I lost my brother too. He was getting choked up now; tears were visible in his eyes.

Youre not the one whos been living with the guilt for fourteen years that if you remembered five minutes earlier you couldve saved your brothers life. Zac said, his chest and throat tight with painful emotion. Tears slid down his cheeks. Becca had been watching from the bedroom doorway; Mac and Jess stood in the doorway of the room they were sharing Isaac, Taylor, and Zacharys old room. He stood staring at Isaac for a moment, and then turned away.

Zac Becca said softly, touching his shoulder as he walked by, but he kept going. She watched him go down the stairs, unable to stop him.

Nice going, Zo. Mac said; later hed realize it wasnt the best thing to say, but at the time he didnt think about it.

He didnt go far. He went out the patio doors, out onto the patio in the back. He leaned over, placing his palms flat on the picnic table. He was fighting a breakdown. Itd been a long time since hed actually broken down and cried hard over his brother. He refused to lose another sibling that way. Taylor had been nineteen years old for Gods sake! Hed be damned if he lost Zo to drugs too. He took deep breaths, his eyes still burning with tears. Fourteen years or not, it was still so hard for him to think about Taylors death. It was easier to thin of him as having left, just gone away

Zac her voice was soft and concerned; he didnt move. She approached him, and gently placed her hand on his back. She rubbed his back gently with her open palm. The damage had already been done; she knew how sensitive her husband was about the topic of his brothers death. His parents had told her how hed never been the same afterward. And even now, it was so difficult for him; and tonight hed been forced to think about it way too much. Hed had a strong and harsh reminder, and it hurt so much.

Honey she said softly. He turned to her and buried his face in her neck. She hugged him as tightly as she could without squishing her swollen belly. She gently stroked the back of his head, his hair drawn back in a ponytail. His tears dripped onto her skin.

Baby she whispered sympathetically. He wrapped his arms around her. I know it hurts; I know she whispered. The wind chimes hanging by the patio doors stirred, ringing delicately.
