Ecuador Photo Collage

Quito's evening glow

All pictures are thumbnails and can be enlarged by clicking on them.  The first photo is Quito the capital city which is nestled between two mountain ranges.  Quito is at the base of Mount Pinchincha, a volcano which has become active in the last few years.

Mt. Chimborazo at sunrise

The early morning sun illuminates 6300m Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest peak.

Locals and tourists.

Horse above snowline near Chimborazo

This was on our climb to the hut at the base of Chimborazo - 5000 m. above sea level. I guess it reminded me of a Bev Doolittle painting.

Ecuador's highest peak, Mt Chimborazo, at over 6000 m.

This was so much more impressive than what the picture shows. Here we were driving along on a cloudy day, when suddenly, looming out of the clouds appears Chimborazo, directly in front of us.

Rio Pastaza canyon This train goes from the mountains to the coast

Tourist things to do must include the Riobamba - Huigra rail journey, which travels doown the Nariz del Diablo, providing some spectacular views, especially if you are riding on the roof. Another must is to bike from Banos to Puyo, a roughly 70 km stretch following the canyon of the Rio Pastaza until it empties into the Amazon basin.
