| About Me My Resume Welcome to my personal homepage. I hope you've looked around and that you like what you see. My name is Tim Mahrt. I'm a student at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, USA studying for a bachelors in Computer Science Engineering. I am also hoping to get certified in Teaching English as a Second Language. Language is probably the only thing that interests me. That being said, language plays a role in just about every aspect of our lives, and thus my interests are diverse, although centered around this central theme. I'm especially interested in how humans and machines process language and social role of language; perhaps one day I will do research on this topic, or something similar. I've already done some basic studies which you can find under the "projects" tab. So far in my life, I've learned French and Japanese on a barely conversational level and I fluently know my mother tongue, English. I also know a small amount of Thai and can read Hangul, the Korean alphabet. Most Westerners think that Asian languages are complex and impossible to learn how to speak or read, but this isn't true, and I'm not sure where the stereotype came from. While they are not as easy as learning Spanish, when English is your first language, learning a language like Japanese is not an insurmountable task. As an East Asian Linguistics Minor, I would encourage everyone with an interest to give it a shot. But I digress. I also know some computer languages, those being HTML, C, and C++. I'm currently learning the OpenGL Extension of C++. Graphic Visualization is another main interest of mine, although I no longer want to be a game programmer. However, it is possible that you may see me develop some small games independently and then release them online or something. In any case, that won't be for a long while, so we won't worry about it. Although I'm interested in languages, I'm also interested in the cultures that own those languages. I went to Thailand once for two months and had the most amazing time. You can read about it on my online journal that I kept while I was there. I love Thailand and I want to return there, but I look forward to visiting other countries around the world as well. For the time being I just study foreign cultures and participate in cultural activities on my school's campus.
