Day 3: Guggenheim, NBC, Empire State Building and a whole lot of other stuff!

Day three started off with another hardy breakfast of
eggs -for some reason, NYC seems to have an abun-
dance of eggs- at another little diner. This time, it
wasn't a cranky waiter but a authentic TV Soap Star
(Dan Frazer from As the World Turns and Kojak) that
stole the conversation! I must have made an impression
on Agent J when I didn't immediately attack Sarah
Jessica Parker, because she didn't hesitate to point out
this one. Unfortunately, I had no idea who he was
anyway. And now we know how Agent J spends her
afternoons!

The Guggenheim Museum

After breakfast, we started our marathon of visiting NYC's major tourist attractions. We bought a
"New York Pass" ahead of time, so we were all prepared to hit the streets!

Our first stop was the Guggenheim Art Museum and, being the art freak that I am, I absolutely Loved it! It's one of those things where, you always hear about it, but you never actually know how great it is till you've been there yourself. Well now I know, and I couldn't even begin to tell you how wonderful the place it is!

Unfortunately, they don't allow photos of the inside of the museum, so I can't show you what it looks like. You'll just have to take my word for it, if you ever plan a trip to NYC, visiting the Guggenheim is a Must!
The Guggenheim is where I fell in
love with my new favorite artist,
Vasily Kandinsky!

Then it was off to a private party at the NBC Green Room where we had the pleasure of meeting some of the most famous names in the world of entertainment. I had no idea that Agent J had so much pull in this town! Mathew Brodrick? Elton John? Janis Joplin? Even Albert Einstien!
Janis Joplin was a hoot! She had some of the funniest stories I've ever heard in my life! There was this one she was telling me about how her, Mama Cass and Frank Sinatra were stuck on a touring bus together because of a mix up in scheduling or something like that, anyway... Oh man, she had me laughing so hard that I thought I was going to pee my pants!

I gave Mathew my phone number and told him to call me if he ever got divorced, but I get the strange feeling that he didn't keep it.

Elton John was really cool! He let us take a ton of pictures with him and by gosh, he hammed it up for every one of 'em!

Albert was pretty interesting, but I have to admit, most of time I couldn't understand a damn thing he was saying. I think he may have had a little too much to drink that day.
OK, so maybe I exaggerated a bit about the party... It was Madame Tussaud's and not the Green Room, and it was a bunch of wax figures I talked to and not real people. It was still a lot of fun, damn it! And Agent J was still the one that got us in!

We really did do a tour of the NBC Studios, though. It was cool enough, I suppose, but sort of disappointing in a way. For instance, did you know that those huge rooms where they tape the all the news programs are actually little tiny areas in the same small room? Yep. They have the sets for the Today Show, Meet The Press, and all the NBC News programs piled into one room that's probably no bigger than gas station restroom. Carson Daly is film on the same stage as Saturday Night Live, for goodness sakes! And the props? None of them are real either. The desk they use for the news shows are just cardboard cutouts. It's all just an illusion! Why, even Matt Lauer is fake. Did you know that? He's not a real person, it's just a robot sitting there with a moving mouth and a bobbing head.

It's like finding out that Santa Claus doesn't really exist!
They don't allow photos of the the NBC studios either, so I had to sneak this one 'cause I knew no one would believe me about Matt. I mean really, do you think I could have gotten this close to him if he were Real?

It was as we were crossing the street to go to the NBC Tour that Agent J pulled a fast one on me! It could have been the fact that we had just seen Sarah Jessica Parker the day before, or the fact that we were standing across the street from an airplane exhibit that made me fall for the oldest trick in the book. I can't say for sure, but whatever it was, her timing was perfect and I fell hard! Now, keep in mind lesson number two: "Whatever you do, Don't Look At The Stars."

There we were, getting ready to cross the street when she gets this surprised look on her face. Then she whispers in my ear, "Don't turn around, Harrison Ford is standing right behind you." Of course, me being the serious tourist that I am, I turned around so fast I thought I was going to give myself whiplash and... There Was No One There!

  I was duped!

  I admit it!

And I still think Agent J missed her calling by not being an actress!
It was during our marathon that I learned my third lesson about the noisy streets of NYC:
3. Speak Up! I Can't Hear You!

As though Agent J really wanted to hear all the things I was saying to her after she fooled me.

After the NBC Tour, we were off to the Empire State Building. Due to the time restriction on the New York Pass, we were not able to go to the observation deck, but we did get to check out the lobby and go on the Skyride, which was pretty cool as far as simulation rides go.

Then it was a mad race to get to Planet Hollywood for dinner before our time ran out. We made it with only seconds to spare. I'll tell you now, we gave those Passes a workout! If they ever go out of business, you can blame it us!
