2003 One For The Rag
So what do you want for your 24th birthday?  How about one hell of a concert in your back yard!  That is what happened when the man known to many only as "Rag" had the Rum and Cigars Band play their first concert in honor of his birthday.  But that is not all he got!  Try 250 people showing up, including single females wearing very little!

The party started rocking around 9:30 pm and like any good party the cops were there in the first half hour.  However, they were quickly sent away when a public gathering permit was flashed for them.  It wasn't long until they were back again only to say that our "gathering" was causing traffic flow problems in a public area, this led to Mr. Jackson being charged with being a parking attendent.  Many who were in the parking lot said he didn't really mind because he picked up some extra cash, but these reports were not confirmed.

On the pool deck in the back yard the party was going strong.  Rum and Cigars front man Lamar Echols and bass player Gregg Adams came out on stage to the Blues Brother theme and this got the crowd going, drinking had been going strong for 2 hours and everyone was ready to party.  Lamar was wearing his usual garments, a "Dukes Of Hazzard" shirt with board shorts and flip flops.  A few songs into the set list the band started playing a great version of "Back in the U.S.S.R., a Beatles classic.   This was followed by a crowd pleasing version of "Hey Bartender."  Half way through the set Lamar put on an "Ass Kickin Hot sauce" shirt that nearly brought the house down.  The band was in rare form, the newly added horns were nothing short of excellent.

Out in the crowd things were heating up, at one time Rag was dancing with a set a twins!  A member of the band pointed this out and soon after the three vanished into the house, they didn't return for quite a while. The planner of the party must have bought 100 beach balls because they were flying everywhere, one was doing good not to get knocked out.

The
set list that the band pulled out suprised even us here at Rum and Cigars.  Not one Jimmy Buffett song was played the entire show, instead songs like "Get up offa that thing", "Detroit Rock City",  "Pour some sugar on me", and orginals like "Unzipped", "Spell Check", and "Time For Some Fun" to name a few.

The show got serious toward the end, much like Britney Spears, Lamar changed shirts yet one more time.  He put on a homeland security shirt and solo performed "Have you forgotten."

"This is a serious song I would like to play.  There is a lot of stuff going on around the nation right now and as everyone knows we have a lot of troups in the middle east right now.  We also have a lot of war protesters who are missing the point of what we are trying to do.  So I would like to do this song for all of our troops and to all of our public servants in our country.  A lot of people have forgotten about what happpend on 9-11 so I would like to sing "Have you forgotten."

The party was great, until next time!
