rules books

"If you think The Rules are crazy, so did we. But after much heartache we came to believe that The Rules aren't immoral or outlandish, just a simple working set of behaviors and reactions that, when followed, invariably serve to make most women irresistible to desirable men."

When "The Rules" was first published in 1995 it quickly became a best seller despite the harsh reviews from newspapers and retailers. Were these dating techniques manipulative games or just old fashioned wisdom from our grandmother's generation?  The controversy began and the publicity followed. Authors Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider promoted their book on Oprah and other talk shows and soon became known nationwide as the "Rules Women."

Today, "The Rules" is published in twenty seven languages and distributed worldwide. Ellen and Sherrie went on to write three other companion books, "The Rules II," "The Rules for Marriage," and most recently "The Rules for Online Dating" with a little help from our Rules Girls on the boards.

What is in these books to make them so lovable or loathable? Dating advice that puts a woman's needs first! The Rules advises women to never accept poor treatment from a man. Don't get stuck in go-nowhere relationships, especially ones where the man is already married. Don't set yourself up for heartache. They tell us to let the man take the lead. Don't call men, don't burden them with your emotional problems, and don't mother or smother them. What most critics disagree with is that The Rules encourage women to take a passive role in the relationship when for the past thirty years women have been encouraged to be the ones who initiate. For many of us, this aggressive approach sounded great on paper, but had poor results in real life. It landed us in relationships with men who weren't that excited to be with us. What man would say "No" to a date with a cute girl? This new relationship book (and style) has been so successful because it's realistic. It says "Yes! It's okay to want to get married."  Ellen and Sherrie are realistic about what men want in a relationship. They want a sexy, happy girlfriend who doesn't try to control him or make him "commit." Men like women with long hair and healthy bodies. Men don't like to talk on the phone for hours. Most importantly, men are attracted to a woman who has her own life. Although some men protest too much and insist that they don't like the The Rules, we have dozens of success stories to show that men love Rules Girls and marry them.
