Star Wars - Knight of the Old Republic (2003/Xbox)

When ‘Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic’ was first announced I was very excited. I’m so glad I did end up buying this game; it has turned out to be a great gaming experience. I’m not a big fan of the star wars games, so this review is coming from someone who enjoys this game for what it is, not because it is star wars.

Game play 10/10

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is possible the best RPG I have ever played. It is filled with fun for many addicting hours. The battle system is great (done in more detail below). The game is pushed along by short cut scenes to develop the story. Like other RPGS when you roam town you are given many local town people to talk to, these are handled in an almost cinematic fashion. You talk to them and are given choices for responses. You have merchants in town to buy new supplies from. You are given a main quest to accomplish, but are also given many side quest, each with rewards.

What makes this game so unique are the Light/Dark side points. Depending one the decisions you make through the game, you are rewarded with light/dark side points. Each with there own benefits and experiences in the game. The decisions you make can dramatically alter what happens in the game. Overall a very fun game, that’s very, very addictive.

Graphics 8/10

The graphics for the most part are great. The power of the X-box is used to show great detail in every object and large backgrounds. They aren't ground breaking for sure, but they are top notch. Everything is just blended together right. There are some scenes in the game that are just jaw dropping. It’s the little details that seem to make it perfect, nothing is over looked. It is all kept in true star wars fashion. The character models are all done well, with all the different races, type, and builds, looking straight out of the movie.

The cut scenes are all perfect, though most are short; they move the story along very well. The only problem would be the occasional frame rate drop. It’s happen each time you load up a game or switch location, those it only happens once.

Sounds 9/10

With thousands of lines of well acted dialogue in this game, the voice acting is very well done, it establish the characters very well, though the lip sync is a little of.

The background music is also great. This is one of the few games that I turn my sound up to listen to because, it is actually enjoyable to listen to.

Battle System 9/10

Since this is an RPG, and a good piece of your time will be spent in battle, the battle system deserves its own category. The battle system is pretty unique. When you are approached by an enemy, the game will pause, leaving you to option to engage the enemy, or to ignore. If you engage will you being a battle, if you ignore, you will have to run and avoid the enemy, which is hard to do in most situations. When you engage in a battle, the screen pauses and you can scan the enemies and pick which you will chose to attack, there you can pick your opening attack move or stack up to 4 attacks to be done to the enemy of your choice.

You can also control your other party member’s attacks but the AI handles them pretty well. You have your normal attack, feats, dark side force powers (Jedi’s only), grenades, mines (though there a little hard to use in a hectic battle), light side force powers (Jedi’s only), and then your items you carry. The battles are turn based, but the give the illusion of real time combat. It’s a great battle system, with plenty of depth. Unlike a lot of RPG's I enjoy the battles it’s not just a repetitive press of one button.

Replay 9/10

The games main quest is a 35-45 hour quest, my self it took 40 hours. I see most people playing this game 2 times through, just to work with both the dark side and the light side. Down Loadable Content through X-box live will be a big help, new items, and they have even reported they would like to be able to alter the story through downloads.

Overall 9/10

An almost perfect game, failing only because it’s little flaws and glitches.
