| It was Wendy who found Jennifer while she was staying at Gregory's house and began exchanging letters with her, She thought of herself as the princess and Jennifer the prince who needed to be rescued. Though it took months, Wendy finally convinced Jennifer to come with her to the Rose Garden Orphanage, where she lived. She helped her escape and took Gregory's gun, so that he could not hurt himself. In the nearby rose patch, Wendy gave Jen her broach, and Jen gave Wendy her bear, who was given the name "Joshua". | At the orphanage, they kept exchanging letters. Wendy was often ill and usually stuck in the sick room, but she would wait for Jennifer every morning. She wanted Jennifer to be hers alone, so she got the other kids to be mean to her and made her the lowest rank. This worked until Jen found Brown and didn't come by as often. Wendy took Sir Peter the rabbit on as a pet, possibly to help ease her own lonliness, but most likely to make Jen jealous. This failed, and the bunny kept running off and making a mess, so she had to give him up. She then made things harder for Jen and Brown, but much to her irritation, they still prevailed. Finally, she made them both Gift of the Month and forced Jen to choose who would be killed, knowing she'd choose the dog. But Brown's death caused Jennifer to beat Wendy up and call her a liar, saying she'd never forgive her. She ran from the room in tears, and was not seen again until December, when she returned with her Stray Dog-Gregory, whom she had manipulated and tortured by dressing as his dead son-and seemingly ordered him to kill the orphans. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
