Fred looked down at himself and screamed: "What have you done to me?"
Then he burst into tears; there is a limit to what even the bravest of
heroes can take. Astra took him in her arms and tried to comfort him, as
a mother might with a small child. Eventually Fred recovered some of his
composure.

 The
scientist/mage said: "That was the best I could do using science. I might
be able to restore you more fully with magic, though."

 Fred started to unzip his leather bandages,
wanting to see what lay beneath.

Fred hugged Astra back without thinking, causing
a nasty wound.
