Robots and Tribbles

It seems that there is an upcoming problem in a universe which mimics the Robot series by Asimov. Go here for a basic layout of those stories:

Well, it seems that there was a radical departure from the series. The Spacers, in an attempt to find a quicker means of space travel, had been conducting experiments in a region of space where the stuff of space/time was....well....thinner than other places. What they do instead was tear a hole in space, from which strange radiations which those of Terra Prime call magic came rushing forth! The magical energies soon engulfed the entirety of the galaxy, setting the stage for some strange stuff!

What the Doctor's group here was going to try to do was defuse an approaching situation. What they are facing are several problems, actually, that interconnect. Another analog of the Doctor, along with analogous Betty, Ragan, and Stacy, have arrived accidently on the Earth of this universe....and stepped into a mess. Disparate events will come together to make a panic shake throughout the entire human sphere of influence. R. Daneel will detect within this Stacy that she really is of an alien race and coupled with certain events elsewhere it'll be thought some kind of invasion is afoot.

All Hell will be braking loose here soon, folks. The Spacer community will erroneously believe that Earth had somehow launched a surprise attack on them, and was going to soon attack Earth and wipe her out. Daneel thinks that Stacy is talking about his Earth when she tells about her people planning on invading and wiping out humanity (didn't know that Stacy and the others were from a different universe). The Spacers think that Earth is going to attack when a Star Trek Federation vessel (the Defiant) pops out of nowhere and seem to give credence to the Spacers fear of an Earth sneak attack. A fellow named Arn Darvin had come down from that ship had said something to give credence to that fear.... Then add to this mix the fact that any kind of Robot above what Earth technology can produce, when exposed to magic, turns into a Golem.....

Yes, quiet a mess. Through luck, bluff, and guile the adventurers are able to calm things down. They are able to convince both Earth and Spacer officials that there wasn't an invasion (Earthern or alien) going on. They were able to help establish diplomatic relations between this universe and that of the Star Trek universe. They are able to, also, help the Robots who turn into Golems in adjusting....and mark out a plan where the Golems will soon withdraw from human space and establish their own nation (and it looked like R. Daneel was going to play a big part of that nation's formation). Heck, it even looked like a newly transformed female Golem named Roxanne was going to be an item with Daneel! In the meantime while Earth slowly built up it's manufacturing capabilities to make it's brand of Robot to fill in the gaps.

That done, then things look like their in order, even though the other Doctor and those who went with him got separate and were still MIA, but that's when Darvin does something with what some call the Sphere of Time...

It happened this way in episodes17984 and

Now, all that there is left to do is for us to take Baley, Daneel, and Gladia back to Earth via TARDIS (quickest way). Baley has a lot of work ahead of him (boy, what a police report he'll be writing). The Defiant was going to be warping back home to return some kind of Bajorian Orb to Bajor so soon would be departing (Sisko also told us in passing on the way back to the bridge). A null field to prevent another episode that had brought us here had been set about it (some kind of interaction between it and the new skipdrive). Gladia had gotten her travel papers and pan-immunity shots (similar to what Ragan and Betty got back on Terra Prime so long ago) and was going to set up shop at Baley's place (hmm).

Anyway, I and the Doctor are going to tell the others about all this as soon as.....

A flash of yellow light interrupts things just as we step into the cargobay where the TARDIS is.

Betty is the first one to recover.

"Please tell me that that wasn't Arn Darven messing with the Orb of Time!" she nearly shouts, looking at the rest of us.

Like calls to like. That's a basic, simplified version of the Law of Association in Magery. In this case the Orb of Time finds itself being used again, but being deflected back in it's travels. Instead of heading back into it's own universes, it finds it must instead head to a universe where Star Trek technology is about....as well as magical energy needed to keep the various Golems and other folks of fantasy alive. The Defiant finds itself near a space station called K-7, in a universe where some other Champions made up of: two elfin couples (one made up by a male named Rugen and a female named Morgana Wordeni, the other made up of a new Light Elf nicknamed Doctor Four and a new Light Elf named Romana) and a male pixie named Triakoth (not yet seen in episode 17328). Thus, while these other Champions were bringing magic to this universe, the Defiant got dragged here by yet another Association (the strongest being the call of a Champion to a Champion).

Because of the somewhat mystical nature of the Orb, it falls is effected by the Law....alas.

Thus, up on the bridge, Jadzia Dax and the others are staring at the now clear viewing screen.

"That's...." Sisko whispered, shocked, "Kirk's ship! The Enterprise!"

Betty

"Here we go again," I sigh. "I thought we'd managed to avoid it this time..."

"Avoid what?" says Daneel, looking a little confused.

"Avoid getting sucked into yet another real, live, version of a TV show episode," says my "sister." "'Trials and Tribble-ations,' here we come!"

Indeed, I'd thought we had at least managed to prevent this particular incident. See, when Sisko mentioned "Arne Darvin," it immediately clicked into my little Trekkie brain who this mysterious passanger who'd gotten loose on Solaria actually was. He'd been going by the name Barry Waddle, but Sisko, quite understandably, had suspected something fishy when he went AWOL, did some checking on him, and came up with his known alias: Arne Darvin. Unfortunately, what with one thing and another, Sisko and co. got a little distracted and never did finish said investigation, or they would have realized that "Arne Darvin" was, in fact, a Klingon spy, the very guy who poisoned all those fuzzy little Tribbles back in Kirk's time period.

With me so far? Of course you are. Everybody's seen that episode! Well, anyway, when Ragan and I heard that name, we were able to warn Sisko what the guy was up to -- namely, trying to use the Bajoran Orb to transport us all back in time so he could change things to get the better of Kirk -- and the newly recaptured Waddle/Darvin/whatever-his-real-name-is was safely locked in the brig.

Or so we thought. Seems like he was able to get out somehow. I'm a bit curious to know how, but that's not really what's important right now. What's important right now is that I'm about to find myself in the middle of one of my all-time favorite Trek episodes. Whoo-hoo!

Ahem. No, wait, sorry, that's not what's important right now. What's important right now is stopping the guy! Yeah! Try and stay focused here, Betty. You're a Champion now!

At any rate, my red-headed counterpart and I quickly fill in the situation for those who missed the earlier discussion with Sisko... ...and head on up to the bridge, so as not to miss any of the action!

In this particular universe, magic had also been unleashed into a previously magicless universe. This is why those non-Champions who where magic based didn't die.

What the adventurers did, with Sisko and the others (Daneel and the others from the Robot universe) help was to stop Darvin (who thought he'd gone back into time instead of going to another universe) killing this universe's Kirk.

Not wishing to tip off Darvin, the adventurers were letting things play out in a similar mr as what had happened in the TV show...until it was getting up near the time where it was about that time for the bar fight scene....

Seems that "our" Darvin had an accident while planting his tribble bomb and got caught by the security guards that Kirk had in front of the grain silos. The truth came out through Darvin, who'd in addition having designs on killing Kirk, wanted something a bit more...

Sigin put it this way in episode 18033:

Basically the bottom line was that "our" Darvin had been planting his tribble bomb in the storage compartment which Kirk would later open. Done with his planting amongst the other tribbles present (some already dead from the poison in the grain planted by this universe's Darvin), the Klingon spy had been climbing out of the bin when he slipped and knocked himself silly on the ladderrungs! Dazed and confused, he'd babbled enough to the guards who'd opened up the bin to make them suspicious (to say the least)! Our teams nearby could not reach Darvin in time to stop this. The guards noticed the tribbles (some dead) and McCoy and Spock (this one's sporting a rather stylish beard, gives him character) was brought into the picture, who discovered the poison and the bomb. Fearing time travel being involved here, Spock was ordered to confirm (or deny) "our" Darvin was a time traveler from the future (Kirk didn't want to deal with his Department of Temporal Investigations yet again). If he was, then certain steps were going to have to be taken here to limit any damage to the time stream..... But as it happened Spock rapidly noted the different quantum signature of "our" Darvin. Dravin's ramblings were put together, and now "our" Darvin was in custody in one of the Enterprise's holding cells. Kirk's Darvin (the one of this universe) was under arrest. Furthermore......

I almost feel sorry for "our" Darvin in a way. His luck is the worst I've ever seen. First he gets caught in his universe by "his" Kirk in his younger years. Then, in the Robot universe, he gets caught by Solarians, people who are hardly competent in fighting crime (much less spies of Darvin's caliber). Finally, he gets caught by "this" Kirk....

As to why so public, and how he'd known to come here to our group? Well, it wasn't actually due to us standing out. Rather, it was due to the fact Darvin had muttered enough in the bin about some traitor to the Empire. A Klingon who'd joined up with Star Fleet, you see. In other words, enough was said and enough remembered by the Redshirts for Kirk to identify Worf. In addition, there was the fact that "our" Darvin had contacted this realities Darvin to try to make an early contact and alliance with the Military.....

Ah, I see that I must explain.

"Our" Darvin's Klingon Empire got thoroughly trounced by the Enemy, it's fleet now a mere fraction of what it had been. The locations of the Klingon fleet locations (and the Romulan fleet) had been less known by the Military at the time of the coming of the Enemy/Alliance War than that of Star Fleet (something to do with the Military Intelligence wanting to keep a close eye on them after some incident with Janeway, I've heard). While not a real big lover of the Military (rather would have his Empire the biggest power around), "our" Darvin was realistic enough to know that the Enemy's Empire (powerful enough to span a LOT of universes) was just too large and powerful for the Klingon Empire to take on alone. The idea was to instead for an early alliance with the Military (the only one who could face and eventually defeat the Enemy) and instead of the Empire being so devastated......

Well, you get the idea....

Naturally, for a big incentive needed for the Klingon High Command to listen to Darvin....for them to give him a hearing was for Kirk to die.....

Somehow the fact that magic was present in this universe also came up, and surprisingly enough Spock believed! Seemed that several incongruities were answered by magic's existence.....

Whatever.

The fallout of all this is thus:

"As I was saying," Kirk continues, "The important issue is what we are going to do with Darvin... with both Darvins."

Inquirer

That's the queue for the beginning of the end of this particular adventure. Just as well. As fun as it's been, one has to concentrate on what they can instead of chasing everything and trying to do everything. Even a multitasking girl like myself....Hell....not even the Doctor can do everything. Maybe "anything", but not everything. Well, there are those Celestrials and the Higher Ups (who I, myself, may be the Creator....IMHO), but that's different.

"And that issue would perhaps best be discussed with the commanding officer of the Defiant," a deep male tenor says behind us, "Might be out of line here, but isn't there a Star Fleet regulation? There is in my Star Fleet."

"As well as mine," Kirk says, looking behind us at Admiral Sisko (back in his regular uniform instead of a more contemporary one), "Admittedly they are rather new due to....prior recent events to today...."

I have a pretty good idea what kind of events he's talking, and I know that at least some

"Mirror, Mirror" Betty murmurs, "Willing to bet money that he's talking about 'prior events to today'. Good episode, but must say that the Federation of Blake's 7 was a better mirror to the Federation of Star Trek."

"True," Ragan nodded.

"One of your favorite episodes, eh?" Chief O'Brien observes.

"Yep, but Trials and Trible-ations is my all time favorite, "Was fun actually being in a live version of it, despite the deadly potential, although I'm almost a little sorry now that I didn't manage to work in the bar fight."

"All the same I'm rather glad we didn't," Gladia puts in, "I'm not the bar fighter type, after all!"

"Oh," O'Brien blinks, suddenly focusing on Gladia instead of the drunken sot who he knew would have started insulting another man's (Montgomery Scott's) work. While he'd been livid to hear what the TV version of the Klingon drunk had said according to Betty and Ragan (and looked forward to belting out a few things with the live version), he was too much of a gentleman to want to start a bar brawl (and possibly getting ladiesy like Gladia Delmar, Betty, and Ragan injured).

"Would have been over almost before it started," I say calmly and slowly, "Believe that."

That simple statement brings several pairs of eyes towards me, but I'm glad to read no alarm in those eyes. It's not that I was going to injure anyone (don't need any of that) or use a few magical spells to put the drunken Klingons out (would take too long to speak the magical words for a strong enough magick). Rather, I know a few pressure points from my studies of Klingon anatomy that will make even the most stubborn, drunken Klingon see reason.

Oh, I wouldn't relish having to resort to such tactics but if I must I must. I am NOT going to see my friends hurt if I can help it! Yes, they can take care of themselves, but still MY body can take much more damage than they can (except for Sigin when he's in dragon form). Fortunately, though the Klingons here are sputtering in surprise and such, their not getting hostile. Frankly, I believe they still think that this is some kind of joke.

That is, until they actually see the Defiant de-cloak....and begin to worry. See, it turns out that certain devices were still being....er.....researched by the Romulans. Thus, no Klingons or Romulans would be screaming about treaty violations.

Well, that's an issue for the diplomats to iron out between these star powers and "my" Federation and the Military. While the Cloaking Device is obsolete by Military standards (i.e. our scanner technology sees it), the same can't be said for the star powers of this reality.

Well a day.

As for the question of the Darvins, it came to pass that the Darvin of this universe gets awarded a fine vacation in a maximum security facility in the Federation for his collusion in a murder plot. Those in Klingon Intelligence (those of this universe) disown him, leaving him out to dry. As for "our" Darvin, he gets turned over to the Klingon Empire of "our" Federation, and is executed.

Sigh.

Say what you will about Klingons, but being soft on criminals isn't one of them. Don't know if I approve, but it's not for me to pass judgment. Those in the Federation ("mine") say Military justice is a bit harsh itself....

Nevermind, I found out about all of that later.

Meanwhile, soon enough we finally get the Defiant set on it's course home (with the Orb of Time properly isolated for transport). They are leaving just about the same time as diplomatic ships arrive to start setting up embassies and such with this reality (as well as those of the Robot universe as well, according to the transmission we got). Later this week (local time) there will be a ship full of researchers, willing and eager to study yet another magical universe (this one brand new to the exposure of magic, if I guess correctly).

Well, almost want to stay around for that and enjoy the fun of learning and exploring, but we got a few commitments back where we came in here. Issues to be taken care of and all that.

Now, there remains the issues of picking up the alien Stacy, finding out where that other Doctor and gang is, AND speaking with those mysterious Elder Champions....

Stacy

My human forms face mimics the odd feelings I have as I look back at the odyssey that my new friends had gone through while I'd been in custody.

How to explain it all? Well, took a bit of doing, but I manage. I round it out by telling how well I'd been treated while under protective custody (not bad, actually). After the others finally explained everything that had happened, the authorities were glad to release me over to the Doctor's custody (or so I thought until I actually saw that short fellow with the long scarf and his wife....think the policemen got conned or something when they got instructions to dump me here in this particular blue box). A trip in the TARDIS and meeting with two sharply pointed couple of people ("elves" they called themselves), I ended up here.

Soon Inquirer and "her" Doctor show up, and I notice that the "elfin" Doctor and his friends ("Romana" and an odd winged humanoid male named "Triakoth") make themselves scarce. They said not to mention them to the others, for fear of a time paradox.....

Considering what I know about time travel (not much), I'm going to just follow that advice and not open that can of worms. The others, if they notice I glazed over how I got here, don't mention it. Guess they figure that Morgana and Rugen gave me a pickup and such....

"...and that's what happened," I finish up.

"I think I'm going to be dizzy," Betty ("mine") mutters under her breath, trying to sort all of that out. Don't blame her, considering I'm still trying to do a bit of that myself!!

"Now, the next thing to do is to go back and actually stop my people from making a horrible mistake," I add, "It would be a shame after all of this that....something special be extinguished from the universe....er....my universe."

Chances were that if I explained really slowly and carefully, my superiors would understand....and believe me....

.....

Well, actually later I would find out that they hadn't at all, but after mysterious visit from some group called Operation Stopwatch the leadership of my people were VERY eager in NOT invading. Point in fact, I hear, they are now scared stiff about the very idea of invading the Earth. The biggest thing is that I hear description of one of the members of that mystery team who.....persuaded my leaders was a human appearing woman who.....bore a strange resemblance to the one named Inquirer.

Never will know, however. Though I retired honorable from service, all access to the sources to confirm or deny such things are well beyond my reach now.

Well....at least my pension keeps me living in good standards. Could have been much worse. Indeed, much worse. Earth and humanity could now be a memory and me only living with regrets and might have beens.

Inquirer

"Do hope she succeeds," I mutter as we part ways with the other Doctor and the alien Stacy, "Else I wonder what is to be done. Will have to check back here sometime, somehow, and see....."

Pity the fool or fools if they tried an act of genocide by not listening to Stacy. I'd make it ugly for them to make them see....differently.

Ack, pleasant thought that, I sigh to myself But if I must, I will....

Soon, we are also parting company with Daneel and his band. 'Tis actually a sad thing, but needful. Daneel is going to get his new people organized and such ("Being a Moses to his people" Baley says....causing Betty and Ragan to grin). Baley himself is going to be busy here as well. Not only does he have to file a LOT of reports and answer a lot of questions, but I get the feeling that his lot in life is going WAY up for excellent work! That and I believe that wedding bells are in the air for him and Gladia (and also Daneel and Roxanne). Could be wrong, but I doubt it. Will ask about it when I see them in ten years or so, when (and if) the Doctor and I still wish to be married.

Speaking of ten years, I think it'll be an interesting time just about then. Hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I think about it. Gut feeling, even, you might say.

In the meantime, the gang is going to settle down on Terra Prime for a bit after we take care of any side issues overlooked (like a few things that Betty mentioned a bit earlier). That done, the Doctor said he was going to take up that instructor position in the Elven Nation while he learned more about the Terra Prime universe (one of the universes the Rules and Agents tasked him to protect). Oh, we'll take side trips time to time to relieve the monotony, and Sigin is still going to be our magical instructor, but for the most part we need to at least touch bases there. Besides, the Doctor says that he needs to talk with Dr. What and Dr. Which in order to get a better grasp on their universes' histories. He knows most of it through his own experiences, but still....

Also, in the meantime, we are taking both Leelas back to Terra Prime. Seems that the elfin Doctor said or did something that makes them want to take up a job as one of Queen Astra's elite, one of Diana's Rangers. It'll be hard, but given both Leelas' backgrounds, I know they're up to the task. She'll make a fine addition to that elite force, but I fear that we may not get to see each other as much as we would like.

Anyway, by now I think a ten year break would be rather nice after all the running around we just did! The road will be calling again soon, but a rest right now would be rather nice. After ten years, though, I know in my metallic bones that magic is going to happen. Bet on it!

Thus ends Book 1 of Doctor Who the Eternal Champion...
