I've posted them on my website in text format; see http://geocities.com/ruhs_email/. I'm happy to post schedules for other sports if people want to provide them to me. This site provides a general tool for looking up schedules for particular sports: http://www.highschoolsports.net/snschool.asp?SelSchool=00CA90277000&B3=New+Schedule For standings and scores, check: http://www.maxpreps.com/. Under California, you pick 11-man football or volleyball, then Southern Section, then Bay League. o Bulletin Temporarily Off-line Due to some unusual behavior the last week or so, the high school's on-line bulletin is temporarily off-line. (If you tried to access the bulletin lately, you probably got info for the wrong date. The dates were rotating about every 10 minutes for awhile and then it seemed to get stuck on Sept. 17.) Hopefully, the overworked networking staff will get a chance to resolve this soon, so keep checking http://bnet.org/ruhs/. o Late Start Day Schedule Through the Rest of the Year The schedule for Late Start Days for the rest of the year is: October 18, November 15, December 17, January 24, March 14, April 25, and June 6. All of these are Mondays except for Dec. 17, which is a Friday. Remember that on Late Start Days, 1st period starts an hour later than usual at 8:55am. The faculty has staff meetings on these days. o Juniors and Sophs - Sign up for PSAT Test The PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16, at 8am at RUHS. It is suggested that all college bound Juniors and motivated Sophomores take this exam. The cost of the exam is $15 (cash or checks payable to RUHS). Juniors can sign up from now through Oct. 13. Sophomores can sign up from Oct. 4-Oct. 13. Space is limited so act quickly. o Extra Jostens Ring Order Days Added Due to a mix up with dates for the Jostens' parent night last week, many parents didn't make it to the meeting. Jostens agreed to add 2 extra order times, Tuesday, Sept. 28, and, Wednesday, Sept. 29 in Room 219 during Snack (9:45-10am). o September 24 Edition of High Tide Student Newspaper Out The latest "High Tide" hit the streets last Friday, Sept. 24. The article that I personally found most interesting was the one entitled "Budget cuts affect class scheduling" since I was one of the few parents arguing (unsuccessfully) at the School Board budget meetings last June that the high school was taking too big of a percentage of the budget hits. It seems many Freshmen did not get into Spanish classes at all this year. Other articles in the student newspaper include "Teachers clash over importance of rallies" and "Staff cracks down on dress code violations, gives detentions." If you haven't seen the paper, check with your student or http://my.highschooljournalism.org/ca/redondobeach/ruhs/. (The new edition wasn't on-line yet when I checked it Sunday, but I'm guessing it might take a couple of days after the paper version comes out before it gets posted.) o Update on Freshmen ASB Positions Because only a few Freshmen turned in ASB packets by last Wednesday's deadline, all Freshmen ASB positions will be appointed for the 1st semester based on interviews. The interviews are currently being scheduled; I'll report on the appointees as soon as they are available. ASB plans to hold elections for 2nd semester after the Freshmen get a better chance to know each other and get acclimated to the high school. o Got Your MTA Bus Card? Wondering How to Get the Monthly Pass? I've had a couple of questions recently from Freshmen parents that have gotten the MTA Bus Cards (boy, they are way ahead of where we were last year, it took us until December before the MTA "liked" the photo we sent in). Now that they have the card, they are wondering how to get the $8 monthly bus pass. Instead of going into the details here, I'm going to refer you to the bus page of my website, http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/bus.html, where I've tried to include all my "lessons learned" on this overly complicated process. Click on "Monthly bus pass" if you've managed to get to that step already. If you are somewhat earlier in the process, try some of the other links. This is REALLY a good deal and a great way to get kids to school once you manage to negotiate the system. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to email me. o Experienced Bus Riders - MTA Cards Expire at the End of Oct. OK, all of you experienced bus riders that think you've got the whole system nailed, don't forget the MTA Cards are only good for one year and you have to renew them. The card you got last year is going to expire at the end of October. Since we know it takes some effort to get through the MTA system, you'd better start working on it now. If you didn't pick up a signed application form at registration, check with the office to get a form. A school administrator needs to sign the form before you mail it in. Ms. Wesley, one of our new APs, signed the forms at registration, so check with her if the receptionist doesn't know about the forms. o Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Friday - Wear Jeans to School RUHS's AHF (Academy of Health and Fitness) is sponsoring a Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the school on Friday, Oct. 1. This event is part of the Lee National Denim Day, the world's largest single-day fundraiser for breast cancer. Staff and students are asked to make a donation in Room 219 (the Lee site recommends $5); donators will receive a pink bracelet to wear to show their support. Proceeds will be sent to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. See http://www.denimday.com/about.asp, for more on Denim Day. To learn more about AHF, a two-year program for Juniors and Seniors that allows students to explore and participate in training for future careers in health, fitness and sport industries, check http://www.bnet.org/district/acdhandf.htm. o Donate Your Old Cell Phones and Print Cartridges Got an old cell phone gathering dust at your house? Both the Ecology Club and the Band and Entertainment Unit are collecting old cell phones so they can turn them in and collect a minimal amount per phone. Ecology Club plans to donate their funds to a good cause like Heal the Bay, whereas the Band is trying to make money to buy new uniforms. So, pick your favorite cause and drop off the phones at either Room 107 (Ecology) or Rooms 2 or 3 (Band). Whatever you do, don't just throw old cell phones in the trash; those rechargeable batteries are pretty toxic. It is easier to donate them than to drop them off at the Toxic Waste Station. Check with your friends and relatives, I bet a lot of them have old cell phones they'd love to get rid of. The Ecology Club is also collecting used laser and ink jet print cartridges, so drop those off in Room 107 too. o Off Grounds During Normal School Hours? Got Your Sticker? If you are legitimately off grounds during normal school hours (e.g., you don't have a 6th period class), make sure you have an off grounds sticker on your student ID. You can get cited by the police for truancy if you are caught off grounds without a sticker. To get a sticker, you need to see your counselor. o PTA Voter's Guide Available On-line The PTA does not endorse any particular candidates running for office, but they'd like you to make an informed decision. As such, the PTA has an on-line "National PTA 2004 Voter Guide" that can be accessed at http://www.pta.org/ptawashington/vote.asp. The guide contains the following: - A list of questions that will help you learn about a candidate's position on the most pressing concerns and issues in public education today - Resources where you can find information on candidate's positions - Information on how you can register to vote and where to go on Election Day o Grad Night Tickets On Sale for $40 Grad Night tickets are now on sale for $40 from Mrs. Bassine in the Admin Building. Get your Student/Parent Waiver Form while you're there. Grad Night is an alcohol and drug free event for the Seniors after graduation. The activities will include dancing, karaoke, casino games, bungee jump, rock wall, pinball games, hypnotist, pool tables, funky hair, plus food and drinks. The price will go up as the year progresses, so buy now. o Did You Pick Up Your Yearbook Last Year? If you did not receive the yearbook you ordered last year, go to Room 202 with your ID to claim it. Unclaimed books will be sold after Friday, Oct. 1 for $20 each. o Want to be in a Movie? Any student, 16 or older, interested in being in a football movie with Adam Sandler, sign up in Room 806 for a filming on Sunday, Oct. 3, in Torrance. And, it helps support the RUHS Cheer Team, too! o Volunteers Needed to Help at College Fair on Oct. 28 The PTSA has been asked to help round up help for the big College Fair being held at RUHS the evening of Thursday, Oct. 28, in the Big Gym. There are a LOT of volunteer slots to fill including set up, event work, and clean up for the Fair itself and help with a dinner for the college representatives. Please contact Marianne Carlton-Felix, PTSA Volunteer Coordinator, at mcarlton@kpmg.com if you can help. The dinner is from 5:30-6:30pm and the Fair is from 7-9pm to give you an idea of the times involved.
