The evening starts with a 20 minute meeting in the Auditorium with the 2 principals and the PTSA. Ten minute class visits will follow starting at 6:20pm for zero period. You get a 5 minute "passing period" to dash to the next class. Be sure your student gives you their schedule so you know where to go. The postcard mailed home by the school provides a convenient table to note the room numbers, teachers, and subjects. I would suggest printing the cropped map from http://ruhs.bnet.org/backtoschool/ and having your student circle their classrooms noting the period number. It is a big campus and easy to get lost. The PTSA will be selling sweatshirts, license plate frames, Sammy Sea Hawks, and other spirit items in the Auditorium lobby starting at 5:30pm. The PTSA budget will also be on display there for review; it will be voted on during the meeting. The RUHS PTSA has 1,048 members so far. Join the team! Get the membership form at http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/Membership_signup.doc. o Schedule Varies this Week to Accommodate Minimum Day Friday Note that, as seems to be the tradition, the Friday after Back to School Night is a Minimum Day; students will be dismissed at 12:20pm. This week Friday will be a modified "A" schedule (all classes, but shortened) with "C" schedule (periods 1, 3, 5) on Monday and Wednesday and "B" schedule (periods 2, 4, 6) on Tuesday and Thursday. o Nominate Your Favorite Teacher for a Disney Teacher Award Nominate your favorite teacher for a Disney Teacher Award through Oct. 15. Disney is looking for teachers who exemplify creativity in teaching and who inspire a joy of learning in their students. It only takes a minute to nominate an inspiring teacher at http://disneyhandteacherawards.go.com/. You need only enter the teacher's name, the school's name, and whether you are a parent or a student. The nominated teachers have to do the harder part by filling in an application. You can also call the toll free number 877-282-8322 to make a nomination. o Spray Hair to Help Grad Night 2006 Parent volunteers are needed to work the Hairspray Booth at the Old Hometown Fair the weekend of Oct. 1-2. The booth is a fundraiser for this year's Grad Night so Senior parents please try to help out. The committee needs 2 parents per shift. They are also trying to recruit 5 students per shift. The shifts are 9:45am-noon, noon to 2pm, 2-4pm, and 4-6pm each day. Contact Kathy Siegel at 543-3233 or ksiegel@traveldoor.com to sign up. o CSF Fall Applications Now Available Students in grades 10-12 with mostly A's on their Spring semester report card should pick up a CSF (California Scholarship Federation) application in Room 215 during lunch. CSF recognizes academic achievement and membership looks good on college and scholarship applications. Seniors who join CSF throughout their high school career are Seal Bearers at graduation. Freshmen, don't worry, you will get your chance to join CSF after Winter semester grades come out. o First Robotics Meeting Oct. 1 - Looking for New Members Beach Cities Robotics (BCR) will hold its first meeting of the 2005-2006 competition year on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10am to 1pm in the RUHS Auto Shop. New members are welcome. Anyone with an interest in robotics, computer animation, CAD (computer aided design), public speaking, marketing, or fundraising is encouraged to come to the meeting to find out more about what this team is about. The group recently made $300 from previous donations so it can add up. Remember that you should never just throw these items in the trash as they are considered hazardous waste. o Eat Pasta for Girls Volleyball Girls Volleyball is sponsoring an "All You Can Eat Pasta Dinner" with a Silent Auction and Raffle on Sunday, Oct. 23, in the RUHS Cafeteria. Dinner will be served between 5:30-7:15pm. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. There will be live music, karaoke entertainment, good food, and good friends.
