It's pretty cool - check it out! o CSF Fall Semester Registration Meeting on Wednesday Students in grades 10-12 with mostly A's on their Spring semester report card should go to the CSF (California Scholarship Federation) information meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at Lunch in Room 215. CSF recognizes academic achievement and membership looks good on college and scholarship applications. o Students - Mark Your Planners with Dates from On-Line Calendar Students received their Planners last week during their 2nd period class. It has a nice red cover and is essentially a month-at-a-glance calendar. The school is encouraging students to go through the on-line calendar at http://bnet.org/calendar and mark their Planners with dates of interest to them. (Our hardworking BeachNet ASB Liaison, Danielle Parsons, expects to make some adjustments to the calendar by Tuesday night based on a recent meeting she had with the ASB Director, Loreen Trevino, so hold off marking the dates until then.) The on-line calendar has events filled out for the entire school year, so be sure to go through every month. Remember that some dates will change during the course of the year, so it is good to revisit the on-line calendar on a regular basis. Of course, the Planner should also be used to record daily homework assignments. If your student did not receive their Planner, have them check with their 2nd period teacher. o Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore Art Thou Romeo? Students interested in auditioning for the next student production, "Romeo and Juliet" need to see Ms. Foley in the Drama Room to sign up for an audition slot. Auditions are taking place on Monday and Tuesday in the Auditorium. Students need to prepare a 2-3 minute monologue. I understand that the Freshmen English curriculum is being tweaked to cover "Romeo and Juliet" in the Fall this year to take advantage of the tie in. You can also see RUHS students Alex Spear, Courtney McManus, and Curtis Miller performing in a current "K&C in Training" production of "Romeo and Juliet" at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse. See http://www.kingsandclowns.com/intraining.htm for more details. o Freshmen Apply by Wednesday for ASB Leadership Positions Freshmen that are interested in joining the ASB leadership team should pick up a packet in Room 219 and then get their application in by Wednesday, Sept. 22. There are elected positions (class officers) as well as 3 appointed positions (e.g., Commissioner of Activities). Those chosen for ASB are required to participate in the 4th period ASB Leadership Class. If there is a big response for the appointed positions, interviews will be held. o Need a Good Excuse to Eat Ice Cream on Tuesday? Help the RUHS Band and Entertainment Unit raise money by eating ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery on Tuesday, Sept. 21, anytime between 2:30 and 9:30pm. Print a copy of the flyer from http://geocities.com/ruhs_email (look for the "Cold Stone Flyer" link) and bring it with you and the unit will get a percentage of your sale kicked back to them. Cold Stone is located at 17362 Hawthorne Blvd. (NE corner of Hawthorne and Artesia, diagonally across Hawthorne from Nordstroms). o Junior Parent Meeting on Class Rings Tuesday Information on ordering class rings was distributed last week to all Juniors. If for some reason, your student didn't get the packet, they can get one from their social studies teacher or in Room 219. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, there is a meeting in the Cafeteria where parents of Juniors can view the ring information, see samples, and place ring orders. o Volunteers Needed to Help at College Fair on Oct. 28 The PTSA has been asked to help round up help for the big College Fair being held at RUHS on Thursday, Oct. 28, in the Big Gym. There are a LOT of volunteer slots to fill including set up, event work, and clean up for the Fair itself and help with a dinner for the college representatives. Please contact Marianne Carlton-Felix, PTSA Volunteer Coordinator, at mcarlton@kpmg.com if you can help. o PTSA Looking for Legislation Chair The RUHS PTSA is looking for a Legislation Chair. Please contact Anita Avrick at 376-5719 or anitapta@adelphia.net if you are interested. PTA is a child advocacy organization whose legislative mission is to speak on behalf of all children and youth. The California State PTA takes positions on issues and legislation. The RUHS Legislation Chair provides PTA members with information about PTA positions on current national and state legislation and issues. You can check the California PTA website, http://www.capta.org/, to find out the position they've taken on current legislative issues. o Free Parent Talk by Michael Josephson on Oct. 5 Michael Josephson, founder of Character Counts, is the speaker at a free parent talk on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 7-9:30pm in the RUHS Auditorium. He will talk about building integrity in your kids. View the flyer at http://www.rbusd.org/page83.html. o Homecoming Court Nominations Nominations for Homecoming Court are coming up soon. My source says you can pick up the forms starting next Monday, Sept. 27, but the bulletin says they'll be available this Monday, Sept. 20, in Room 219. Either way, nominations are for Prince & Princess for Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors and for King & Queen for Seniors. o Clubs Gearing Up for Action You really need to check the club section of the on-line bulletin at http://bnet.org/ruhs/ to keep up with regular club meetings and activities. Mostly, I'll just post club special events in the RUHS Email. However, here's a few items from the current bulletin to give you an idea of the club options. - The first Spanish Club meeting is Monday in Room 404 at lunch. New members are welcome. As a tip, last year, Spanish Club offered free tutoring and some teachers gave extra credit for participating. So, keep an eye on the bulletin to see if they do tutoring again this year. Every little bit helps! - Cervantes is meeting Monday in Room 403 at lunch. Officers will be elected for the new school year. All present and former AP Spanish students are welcome. - Drama Club is meeting Monday in the Drama Room at lunch. You must have a Drama Pass to attend. If you need a pass, go to Room 219 at snack or lunch. - Key Club meetings start Tuesday at lunch in Room 128. Check http://bnet.org/ruhs/web3/clubs/keyclub/ to find out more about this service club. The website is a little out of date, but it will give you an idea of what the organization is about. - The first Ecology Club meeting is Tuesday in Room 107 at lunch. They are encouraging new members. CONGRATULATIONS o RUHS Scoops Up 34 Art Awards at the LA County Fair RUHS came away with 34 Art Awards at the LA County Fair Education Expo.
