Beginning Sept. 26, students will not be permitted to leave campus during the normal school hours without an off-grounds sticker on their ID card. o First High Tide of the School Year Came Out Friday The student newspaper, "High Tide", came out on Friday, Sept. 16. The papers are handed out in the classrooms, so your child should have gotten one. Be sure to ask to see it, as there is always a lot of good information about the school to be found in this publication. The front page headlines this edition include "Construction on science building continues", "College Board has plans to audit classes", and "Three school board members face possible recall". There's an interesting feature with shots of "High Tide" front pages from the past as well as 2 pages of sports news. o Junior & Senior Class Rings - Parent Night Monday Representatives from Jostens visited Junior social studies classes last week to discuss class rings. Each Junior was given an envelope of information and Jostens will be back on Monday during the day to pick up order forms; a $50 deposit is required. There is a Parent Night Monday, Sept. 19, from 5-9pm in Room 801 where parents can stop in and ask questions before finalizing their orders. (The flyer sent home with the Juniors and the post card mailed to homes indicated Family Night was 7-8:30pm in the Cafeteria, but, per the on-line calendar, the times and location have changed.) There are a LOT of ring options - you can even design your own ring at http://jostens.com/. o Back to School Night September 29 Make sure you have Back to School Night on Thursday, September 29, on your calendar from 6-8pm. The evening will start with a short meeting in the Auditorium followed by classroom visits. This is your best chance to meet all of your student's teachers and get a quick run down on their classes. See the school's Back to School web page at http://ruhs.bnet.org/backtoschool/ for more details. You should have received a postcard from the school with a handy form to note the room numbers for each period of your student's schedule to help you navigate the evening. o PTSA News The PTSA will be selling sweatshirts and other spirit items at Back to School Night in the Auditorium lobby starting at 5:30pm. The PTSA budget will also be on display there for review. Part of the meeting in the Auditorium will include a 5 minute PTSA meeting where the budget must be voted on. Don't forget that it is not too late to join the PTSA. See http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/Membership_signup.doc for an updated family membership form. The staff membership form is at http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/staff_membership.doc. Teacher PTSA members can apply for state PTA scholarships and grants. Student members can apply for scholarships from the RUHS unit (if they have been active members for at least 2 years, including their Senior year.) The PTSA supports student recognition nights, provides funding for field trips, and organizes volunteers for many school events. See the staff membership form for a more complete list of the many ways the PTSA helps at RUHS. o Did you Join ASB at Registration and NOT Get a Planner? Student who purchased an ASB card during registration and did NOT receive a Student Planner, may pick one up for free from Mrs. Frith in the Admin Building by Friday, Sept. 23. Any remaining planners, after that date, will be sold to interested students for $5. o Get Involved - Join a Club There are lots of clubs at the high school and most of them meet at lunch once a week, so it's easy to participate. Some of the clubs are just for fun, some are educational or provide tutoring help, and some are for a good cause. The best way to find out about what clubs are available and when they meet is from the bulletin. They'll also be a special club sign up day during lunch on Oct. 6. Here are some of the club meetings I noticed last week in the bulletin to give you an idea of some of the choices: - Improv - Salsa Dancing - Otaku no Anime - Drama - Polynesian - Spanish - Math - Gay-Straight Alliance - Ecology If you don't see anything that interests you, start your own club! Go to Room 219 for more information. And, remember club membership and leadership looks good on college applications. o Order Senior Memory DVD and Help Grad Night 2006 Grad Night 2006 is sponsoring a Senior Memory DVD fundraiser. The DVDs cost $44 with $14 coming back to the Grad Night 2006 Committee. You can find out more about this DVD keepsake and make your order online at http://www.perfectgraduationgift.com/. Ticket sales will start Oct. 6. o Register with NCAA if Plan to Play Division I or II College Sports The parent of a recent graduate suggested I pass on the following advice to high school athletes. You need to register with the NCAA at http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/ after your Junior year if you want to play Division I or II sports in college. Students can also review the list of core courses they must take in high school to be eligible for college sports at that site. The pamphlet "Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete" provides more details. It is available online at http://www.ncaa.org/library/general/cbsa/2004-05/2004-05_cbsa.pdf. When registering for the SAT and ACT tests, athletes should input the NCAA Clearinghouse code 9999. The NCAA phone number is 877-262-1492, 8am-5pm, M-F. o Seniors: Information Sheets Now Due for Scholarship Folder Seniors, the Information Sheet is now due to the Career Center for your scholarship folder. You also need to request recommendation letters from 3 individuals such as teachers, counselors, community service sponsors, church leaders, or employers. A sample Information Sheet is available at http://www.bnet.org/ruhs/web3/academics/ccenter/info.html. o Don't Park in Vincent Street Area Unless You Want a Ticket The Redondo Beach Police Parking Enforcement has been at full strength giving tickets before and after school in front of the Admin Building. Parking is NOT permitted in Vincent Park or anywhere in the Vincent Street area. Use the parking lots off Diamond or near the Auditorium.
