Under California, you pick 11-man football or volleyball, then Southern Section, then Bay League. o Read the On-line Bulletin Daily If you have the time, you should try to browse the RUHS on-line bulletin daily at: http://ruhs.bnet.org/. The bulletin is geared towards the students (in fact, it is read to them each day during 1st period), but there is a lot of good stuff for parents to glean. I try to summarize the items I see in the bulletin that I think parents will be particularly interested in, but new items always come in after I've sent out my email for the week. One tip is that new items in the bulletin have a single asterisk next to them (*) whereas repeated items have multiple asterisks. o Dress Code to be Strictly Enforced Starting immediately, the school intends to more strictly enforce the dress code. The rules below apply to all clothing and accessories worn during the normal school day and at all school activities and events: - No unsafe or dangerous dress - No obscene symbols, signs, or slogans - No language or symbols that support sex, drugs, alcohol or gang affiliation - No baggy pants - Clothes must conceal undergarments - Clothes must provide adequate covering - No halter tops or tube/strapless tops o Planner Calendars to be Distributed This Week The student planners (basically, a month-at-a-glance calendar this year) should be distributed this week. School events will not be pre-printed on the calendar this year. Students need to manually write in the items of interest to them. Please encourage your student to use the planner to record their homework assignments! o Freshmen - Interested in Running for an ASB Position? Freshman interested in running for an ASB (Associated Student Body) position should pick up an ASB packet in Room 219. (ASB is the equivalent of what most of us parents called Student Council back in "the old days.") o High Tide Student Newspaper Came Out Friday The September 10 edition of the "High Tide", the student newspaper, came out last Friday. It contains articles such as "Campus barely ready for first day of school", "New staff prepares for successful school year", and "Students debate validity, effectiveness of summer reading" as well as a full page of photos from the athlete's Hell Week. All students should receive a copy of the paper in one of their classes; check with them if you haven't seen it. Extra copies are usually also available in the library. Parents can learn a lot about the school and what's on the minds of our teenagers by reading this paper. o Senior Class T-Shirt Order Forms - Monday On Monday, Jostens will be at school and will visit all of the Economic and Government classes to distribute order forms for Senior Class T-shirts. The form will list the prices and due date. Money can be turned in to Room 202, Room 219, or Room 821 (Mr. St. Hilaire). Students will have about a week and a half to place their order. The goal is to have the shirts by the Senior Meeting on October 4. Seniors can place an order anytime after the due date; they will simply receive their shirt later. o Club Sign-ups Wednesday Each club will have a table along Alumni Walk on Wednesday during lunch. All students are invited to sign up for a club, or simply learn more about a club. Students can join clubs throughout the year by attending the club's meeting; most clubs meet once a week at lunch. The on-line bulletin lists club meetings and news. Clubs are an excellent way for students to make new friends, meet other students with the same interests, and become involved in the school. It is also very helpful to list clubs as an extracurricular activity when applying to colleges. o SCROC Job Training Classes Begin Monday SCROC (Southern California Regional Occupational Center) job training classes for Juniors and Seniors begin on Monday, Sept. 13. The classes and bussing are free and students can earn up to 15 credits per semester. The SCROC bus pick up is at Diamond & Francisca (by the Science Building) at 12:30pm and 3:25pm. Students currently enrolled may be dropped from their class if they are absent the first day. Students that are not currently enrolled can still enroll on Monday. For more information, check the SCROC website at http://www.scroc.com/index.htm and contact Marlene Van Ert at 224-4240 or mvanert@SCROC.K12.ca.us. o Beach Cities Robotics Team 294 Now Meeting Beach Cities Robotics Team 294 has begun their regular meetings. For more information, see their website http://www.bcrobotics.org, send an email to cheryl@bcrobotics.org, or call Cheryl at 318-7901. o ASB Back to School Special - ASB Card and Yearbook for $105 ASB's (Associated Student Body's) Back to School Special includes an ASB Card and a yearbook for $105. The ASB Card gets students into all regular games plus provides discounts to dances, plays, and other school events. The yearbook will sell for at least $70 later in the year and the ASB Card alone costs $45, so the special provides a $10 discount. This discount is available in Room 202 through Sept. 30. o Miscellaneous Student Announcements - All students must have a RUHS ID for the current school year. If you haven't yet obtained yours, go to Room 202 to get a temporary ID and make an appointment to get your photo taken for your permanent ID. IDs are currently free, but after Oct. 6 there will be a $10 charge. - If you aren't using your locker, please let the Attendance Office know so they can assign it to another student. - If you want to park your car on campus, you must have a parking permit. Bring current proof of registration, proof of insurance and your driver's license to Room 202. There is no cost for the permit. - The ASB Finance Office, Room 202, is open for student business before school, snack, lunch and after school only.
