Distribution will begin at 7am. There should be a special line for those with a zero period class so you can get through the line quickly and then report to your class. I've heard that some of the classes scheduled to be in the 100 Building (Science Building), might be moved to the 500 Building so tell your kids to be on the look out for signs. Also, the lockers in the Science Building might not be available for a few weeks. Diamond was closed at Prospect a few days ago due to street work. Hopefully, that will be done before school starts, but you might want to leave a little extra time in the morning just in case it is a mess. o "A" Schedule First Week of School I understand that the "A" schedule (all periods) will be followed the entire first week of school. The normal block scheduling will pick up the following week: - Mondays - A Schedule - Every period meets - Tuesdays/Thursdays - B Schedule - Periods 2, 4, and 6 meet - Wednesdays/Fridays - C Schedule - Periods 1, 3, and 5 meet o Opportunities to Change Student Schedules - Sept. 12-23 According to the bottom of the preliminary schedules received at registration, no changes will be made to student schedules the first week of school unless there is a hole in the student's schedule. The counselors will be busy enrolling new students. If you need to change your schedule, you must make an after school appointment between Sept. 12-23 with your counselor. The names of the counselors and their alphabetic assignment of students are listed below for your convenience. The school phone number is 798-8665. - Tawni Weidman x2015 tweidman@bnet.org (A-C) - Arond Schonberg x2014 aschonberg@bnet.org (D-H) - Ashley Goodman x2043 agoodman@bnet.org (I-M) - Marianne Turner x2016 mturner@bnet.org (N-R) - Keith Fulthorp x2012 kfulthorp@bnet.org (S-Z) o Late Start Dates this Year The school has set the following dates as "Late Starts" this year. For you new parents, on a Late Start Day, classes don't start until 8:55am instead of the usual 7:55am. The staff holds their faculty meetings during these days. If your child has a zero period class, they'll need to check with the teacher as to whether class will be held on these days or not. - Monday, October 10 - Monday, November 14 - Friday, December 16 - Monday, January 9 - Monday, February 6 - Monday, March 13 - NO APRIL - Monday, May 1 - Monday, June 5 o On-Line Calendar The school maintains an on-line calendar at http://bnet.org/calendar. The holidays listed on this calendar are correct. You might have noticed that the calendar listed on page 3 of the on-line Parent Student Handbook was totally incorrect, so don't use that one. That handbook is a district resource and I have informed them of the problem. o Read the Daily Bulletin to Stay Informed The Daily Bulletin with announcements of interest are read to students each day in their first class. It is important that kids listen to these announcements as it is the primary method of distributing information to the students. The bulletin is also posted around the school. If your child indicates their teachers are not providing this information, I would suggest bringing it to the attention of the school. The bulletin is also available on-line at: http://ruhs.bnet.org. While it is geared toward students, there is a lot of good stuff for parents to glean. I try to summarize the items I see in the bulletin that I think parents will be particularly interested in, but new items always come in after I've sent out my email for the week. One tip is that new items in the bulletin have a single asterisk next to them (*) whereas repeated items have multiple asterisks. o Look at Your Student's Planner The school has put together a very nice planner this year with important dates pre-printed in it. Students that joined ASB at registration were given a free planner and they were sold for $5 to other students. If there are any left, you can probably pick one up at the Finance Office (Room 202). If your student got a planner, ask to see it. There is lots of good information in there including the bell schedule, phone numbers, dress code, graduation requirements, and college admission requirements as well as club and sport information. Please encourage your student to use the planner effectively to record their homework - it's got lots of room to write things down. The school covered the cost of the planners and they'll be watching to see if the students appreciate them before ordering them next year. o Bus Schedule Card The Redondo Beach Transit Department put together a nice BCT (Beach City Transit) line 102 schedule card designed just for the RUHS kids. It lists only the busses of most interest to them in the mornings and afternoons. The card was given out at registration, but if you didn't get one, it is on-line at http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/school_tripper.pdf. There is an additional bus this year and that new bus is included on the card. The city is hoping to transition kids that are currently using the MTA 130 to BCT. So, if you haven't tried BCT lately, you might want to give it a chance as they are working to accommodate the students' schedules and loads. Check my bus webpage http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/bus.html for more tips on the busses. The city's transit site is http://www.redondo.org/depts/bdtpm/transit/default.asp. o Join the PTSA If you didn't join the PTSA during registration, it's not too late. Get the form at http://ruhs.bnet.org/registration/PTSA.pdf and mail it to the address indicated at the bottom of the form. All parents, teachers, AND students are encouraged to join the PTSA. Student members can be eligible for scholarships from the high school unit, the PTSA district Council, and state organizations. Remember that the PTSA helps fund busses for field trips, Hands on Art projects, student awards, and more. Please contact Andrea Wagner at rickandrea@earthlink.net if you have any questions regarding PTSA membership. o STAR Test Results You should have received your student's individual STAR test results from last Spring in the mail a week or so ago. Contact the school if you did not get them. To view the school's overall results on the state's standardized tests, see http://star.cde.ca.gov/star2005/Viewreport.asp. You'll need to select Los Angeles County, Redondo Beach Unified and Redondo High in the appropriate boxes and then click on "View Report". o Are All the Summer Projects Done? Yes, your child has Summer Reading projects. If they are taking AP classes, they probably have some additional work due at the start of school. Check http://www.rbusd.org/SUMMERREADING.html for details. I've heard from a couple of parents that they had trouble accessing the site, but it seems OK right now. o Sign up for SAT Workshop in October The Reading Game in conjunction with the RUHS PTSA is running a workshop in October for the November SAT. Classes will be held on all Saturdays in October from 9am-12:30pm. The cost is $200; limited scholarships might be available. Download the form from http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/SAT_workshop.doc. The workshop is geared toward Seniors, but Juniors can sign up if there is space. For more information, contact Bev Reynolds at bhrey@adelphia.net Sorry I misspoke last email when I said Juniors are not eligible to take the SAT until the Spring. They CAN take it, it is just not recommended as they will probably do better if they wait until Spring. o PSAT in October I've had a couple of questions about the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). Juniors should take this test to practice for the SAT as well as to enter the National Merit Scholarship program. Sophomores can also take the test for early SAT practice, but they are not eligible for the scholarship entry. Per the site below, I believe the test will be given on Saturday, Oct. 15, at RUHS, but I need to verify that. All registration will be through the school. You do NOT register on-line through the SAT site. The school should give students plenty of notice about registering for the test. For more info on the PSAT/NMSQT program, see http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html ONGOING FUNDRAISERS: o Target: http://target.com/target_group/schools/search_school.jhtml School ID: 29328 o When you buy anything at Office Depot, ask them to give credit to RUHS.
