General schedules: http://www.highschoolsports.net/snschool.asp?SelSchool=00CA90277000&B3=New+Schedule For standings and scores, check: http://www.maxpreps.com/. Under California, pick 11-man football or volleyball, then Southern Section, then Bay League. o Dia de los Muertos Family Exhibit Monday The Foreign Language Department is hosting a Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibit of student art on Monday, Nov. 1, from 6-8pm in the RUHS Library. Come and see all the ofrendas (memorials) and calaveras (skeletons) created by our talented kids in Spanish classes. The classes will also be viewing the exhibit during the week. o Back to School Night Thursday - Bring Your Student's Schedule One of the best ways to show support for your students and get to meet all of their teachers is to attend Back To School Night this Thursday, Nov. 4. The program will kick off at 6pm with "Meet the Principals" and a short PTSA meeting in the auditorium. Class visitation starts at 6:20pm for zero period classes. Each class meeting is 10 minutes with 5 minutes to change classes. Wear good walking shoes because the campus is sprawling and hilly and they're giving us "old folks" less time than the kids to get between classes. (Of course, we don't have to stop at our lockers.) You should have received a postcard in the mail with Back to School Night information. The back of the card has a place for you to note your student's schedule so you know which classes to go to. The full campus map of the school was updated recently to include the new 800 building (warning, you'll need your reading glasses): http://ruhs.bnet.org/backtoschool/New_Campus_Map-1.pdf. I would recommend printing it out and having your student mark the classroom locations by period number. On the cropped map, the 800 building location is still denoted as construction area. o Don't Take Off-Campus Courses Without Talking to Your Counselor If you plan to take ANY course off-campus, during the school year or during the summer, you must see your counselor FIRST for a permission form or you will not receive credit. o Homecoming Results - Class of 2008: Princess Gaby Vogelbacher, Prince Norbert Sales Attendants: Jill Welch, Jeff Kim, Keenan Tashiro - Class of 2007: Princess Courtney Steele, Prince Alex Birnbaum Attendants: Brittany Gomeztrejo, Katherine Wong, Marcus Poydras, Thomas Wilson - Class of 2006: Princess Katrina Watson, Prince Miles Lambert-Peck Attendants: Carly Correa, Angel Sales, Jaryd Tashiro - Class of 2005: Queen Jade Arjasbi, King Nick Spear Princess Aja Schmutz, Prince Andrew Lippa Attendants: Hillary Benzel, Jenny Byrne, Nicole Perry, Collin Cooper, Tyler Nazarian - Floats 1st: Seniors 2nd: Sophomores 3rd: Juniors 4th: Freshmen o Senior Lunch Postponed The Senior Lunch scheduled for Nov. 2 has been postponed as food donations are still being sought. The new date will be advertised in the on-line bulletin. The goal is to have one Senior lunch/BBQ per month. o BIG Thanks to Parents that Helped at the College Fair The Career Center asked me to pass on a huge thank you to all the parents that helped with the College Fair last week. They said they couldn't have done it without you! o So You Want To Be a School Board Member? "So You Want to Be a School Board Member?" will be the topic at a special meeting of the RBUSD School Board on Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 7-8:30pm in the Board Room of the District Office (1401 Inglewood Ave.). There will be 3 seats up for election on the March ballot. The board is sponsoring the workshop to discuss the responsibilities of the position; it entails much more than just attending 2 meetings a month. An overview of the roles of the board will be covered: - Policy setting body of the district - Employer of almost 1000 full and part-time employees - Negotiations, construction projects, and budget planning Candidates must file by Dec. 10 at the Redondo Beach City Hall. Current board members Rebecca Sargent and Robin Shaw will be "termed out" having served two full terms and member Jane Diehl is completing an unexpired term. If you have any questions regarding candidacy, please call Superintendent Carol Leighty at 379-5449, ext. 248. o National PTA Stand on 3 State Propositions The National PTA never endorses any particular candidate, but as a child advocacy organization, they do take a stand on issues that affect children. As such, they recommend you vote as follows on Tuesday on 3 propositions: - Yes on Proposition 61 - Children's Hospital Bond Act - Yes on Proposition 63 - Mental Health Services Act - No on Proposition 68 - Gaming Revenue Act The PTA suggests the following resources for more voter information: - National PTA: http://capwiz.com/npta2/e4/ - League of Women Voters: http://www.lwv.org/voter/voter_information.cfm o RBEF Looking for School Site Volunteers The Redondo Beach Education Foundation (RBEF) is looking for at least two parent volunteers to be RBEF School Site Representatives. These parents will keep the school in touch with what RBEF is doing, keep RBEF informed of school events where the foundation can "advertise", and help organize volunteers to sell tickets to the gala in June. Contact Marnie Woodward Levy at 379-7144 or mar@cyberverse.com if you can help or want to learn more. As background, RBEF is a volunteer organization whose sole purpose is to raise money for the Redondo Beach Unified School District. They are busy raising money through grants as well as community and corporate fundraising to help make up the school district budget shortfalls.
