The school has been working to get it repaired, but they don't expect it to be back online until the middle of the week. In the interim, if parents have concerns, they should call the Attendance Office at 798-8676 to check on a student's attendance record. The Attendance Office also recently announced that you must now clear absences within 5 days. Failure to do so will result in your child being considered truant. o Good at Science? Join Science Olympiad The Science Olympiad is a club at Redondo that competes in various activities at a one day competition in May in Pomona. Events include things like hitting a target with a catapult, lab activities, and tests of knowledge. Check it out Wednesdays at lunch in Mr. Ducar's room (Room 125). o Seniors: Apply for Internship at Northrop Grumman Northrop Grumman in El Segundo is bringing their High School Involvement Program (HIP) to RUHS. Applications are available now from your counselor's office for a semester long internship for Seniors with at least a 2.0 grade point average. The deadline to return completed applications is Nov. 10. Interviews will be held on campus on Nov. 17. The program will run during 2nd semester from Feb. 7 through June 9. Selected students will be on-site at Northrop Grumman for two hours each day, working with a mentor, learning about an area of interest to the student plus learning about how a corporation works. The program hours are 6-8am, 12:30-2:30pm, or 1:30-3:30pm Monday through Friday. Students will receive high school credits and upon satisfactory completion of the internship will receive a $250 scholarship. o Seniors: Nov. 30 College Application Deadlines/UC & CSU Workshops Applications for UCs (University of California) are ONLY taken from Nov. 1-30. Most CSUs (California State University) and private colleges also adhere to a Nov. 30 application deadline so this is a critical period for Seniors applying to college for Fall 2006. The Career Center is offering workshops this week on the admissions applications for the 2 California university systems. Don't miss out on this opportunity. - Tuesday Nov. 1: CSU Admissions Application Workshop, Lunch, Career Center - Thursday Nov. 3: UC Admissions Application Workshop, Lunch, Career Center For more on the admissions process: - UCs: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/apply - CSUs: http://www.csumentor.edu/ o El Camino Counseling & Early Application Program The El Camino College (ECC) Outreach Counselor will be available Wednesday, Nov. 2, in the Career Center from 10am to 2pm. ECC offers an Early Application for Admissions Program for Seniors planning to attend ECC in Summer and/or Fall 2006. Students may apply online at http://www.elcamino.edu from Nov. 1-Mar. 3. Regular admissions will begin Mar. 6 both online and in person in the ECC Admissions Office. o Scholarship Opportunities - Check Career Center Online List There are a lot of scholarship opportunities out there and you don't want to miss out on a chance to help finance your college education. The Career Center posts a really nice table of scholarships available with short descriptions, deadlines, and links to get more details. Be sure to check it out regularly at http://www.bnet.org/ruhs/web3/academics/ccenter/. Click on "Recent Scholarships". Some of the scholarships have fairly general criteria with an emphasis on GPA and community service while others are based on heritage, career plans, or family affiliations. While most scholarships are for Seniors, some are open to other grade levels so it is not too early to start looking even if you have younger students. Here are just a few example to pique your interest: - Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, $4000 and $20000 awards - Target All Around Scholarship, $1000 and $25000 awards - Cerritos Performing Arts Scholarship, $1000-$10000 awards - SAE Engineering Scholarship, $400-$10000 awards - VFW Veterans Tribute Scholarship, $3000-10000 awards For those who have participated in robotics, be sure to check http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2006/scholarshipsummary.htm for an additional detailed list of scholarships available to those with FIRST experience.
