Seniors and their parents will be admitted early at 7pm with their student ID. The fair will offer information from over 130 college reps on admissions, housing, financial aid, majors, and more. See http://www.bnet.org/ruhs for "College Fair Info Cards", "College Fair Flyer" and "Questions to Ask At the College Fair". The info cards are for students to complete in advance and give to colleges from which they want to receive additional information. Many of the reps will have similar cards at their tables, but it will save time if students prepare cards in advance. o New High Tide Out The latest edition of "High Tide", the student newspaper, came out on Friday, Oct. 22. Get more insight into the goings on at the school, by reading articles such as "New program will help teachers assess student needs", "Undercover officers crack down on disobedience on line 215", and "Sex, litter, vandalism close science building at lunch". If that last title doesn't get you to read the paper, I guess nothing will. Every student should get a copy of the paper delivered to them in class. Check http://my.highschooljournalism.org/ca/redondobeach/ruhs for the on-line version of the older papers. The previous edition, Oct. 8, is now available, although I had to go through the Archives link to find it. o CAML Math Contest, Tuesday at Lunch The first California Math League (CAML) Contest is this Tuesday, Oct. 26, at lunch in Room 316. Bring your calculator and earn extra credit in your math class (geometry and higher). There are 6 CAML contests each year, with 6 questions per contest and a 30 minute time limit. The last 2 questions are generally more difficult than the first four with the final question intended to challenge the very best mathematics students. The problems require no knowledge beyond high school math; no calculus is required. Two to four of the questions only require a knowledge of elementary algebra. To find out more, check: http://www.mathleague.com/. The website includes sample questions from past tests. o Dia de los Muertos Exhibit Evening of Nov. 1 The Foreign Language Department is hosting a Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibit of student art on Monday, Nov. 1, from 6-8pm in the RUHS Library. If you have a first year Spanish student, they should be in the midst of making an "ofrenda" for the exhibit. In case you aren't familiar with ofrendas, they are memorials to someone who has died that is important to the student. The second year Spanish students make calaveras, whole skeletons representing a famous Spanish speaking person. o Do You Have Items for Betty Smith Ofrenda? The school is putting together a special ofrenda for Betty Smith, RUHS's long time secretary, who recently passed away. This ofrenda will be on display at the Dia de los Muertos exhibit. If anyone has any items that they would like to have put on the ofrenda honoring her life, please give them to Connie Smith in Room 404. Label items that you would like returned on the bottom with your name and phone number. o Red Ribbon Week - Say Boo to Drugs Red Ribbon Week is a national anti-drug awareness event. RUHS's AHF (Academy of Health and Fitness) has planned several activities to promote the week's message. There will be red ribbons tied around trees, signs around campus, tombstones with names of famous people who died because of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco (a nice Halloween tie-in), and a Wear Red Day. The students will also be receiving a few special freebies - look for the final details on Wear Red Day and how to claim the give-aways in the on-line bulletin. o Help Keep the Building 800 Restrooms Open The restrooms in the 800 building reopened last week after being closed for cleaning and repair due to vandalization. Ask your child to report any act of vandalism that they see and, of course, make sure they aren't part of the problem. o Did You Qualify for Free/Reduced Meals? If you turned in an application for free or reduced meals and are uncertain if you qualified, go to the cafeteria or one of the snack bars and ask to enter your student ID number. They will be able to tell if you qualified. You will NOT be sent a status letter. o Robotics Team News - Team 294 Needs Photographer and Videographer Beach Cities Robotics Team 294 needs a photographer and a videographer to help with short film festival submission. They are also looking for a student interested in electronics to work closely with the mentor engineer building their control board. Please contact Cheryl at cheryl@bcrobotics.org or 318-7901 if you can help. See the team's website at http://www.bcrobotics.org. - Team 294 Putting on Lego Tournament Nov. 20 The largest Southern California Lego League Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 20, 10am-5pm at Manhattan Beach Middle School. The event is free and open to the public. Team 294 is partnered with Elemental Media Groups, teachers of Lego Mindstorm workshops, to put on the tournament. - Robovations League Forming - Learn More on Oct. 24 A new California Robovations League is being formed. This new off season competition blends workshops with robotics competitions for high school students across Southern California. There is a meeting on Sunday, Oct. 24, at Chatworth High School from 2-4pm for those interested in learning more.
