General schedules: http://www.highschoolsports.net/snschool.asp?SelSchool=00CA90277000&B3=New+Schedule For standings and scores, check: http://www.maxpreps.com/. Under California, pick 11-man football or volleyball, then Southern Section, then Bay League. o Bulletin Back On-Line The bulletin is back on-line after being down for a few days last week. So, be sure to check it out at http://bnet.org/ruhs/. There is "good stuff" posted here on a daily basis. (Although bnet.org seems to have been down most of the weekend...) o Do You Want to Opt Out of Releasing Info to Military Recruiters? Part of the No Child Left Behind Act REQUIRES the school to release student information (name, phone number, address) to military recruiters unless the parents request that the data not be released. This information is typically requested by each service for Juniors and Seniors. An "opt out" form was recently mailed home to the affected students; parents have until Oct. 15 to return the form. I have a copy of the form on my website at http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/opt_out.pdf. For a more complete story on this situation, read the following article in the Sept. 30 edition of the "Easy Reader": http://easyreader.hermosawave.net/news2002/storypage.asp?StoryID=20024910&IssuePath=news2004/0930/ o Pick Up Photo Packages Outside Room 219 Photo packages ordered during registration are now available outside Room 219 during snack and lunch. I'm guessing that if you are unhappy with the photos and want a retake, you should get an appointment for this Tuesday or Wednesday since the photographers will be here then. Go to Room 202 for an appointment. o Why is Everyone Wearing Pink Bracelets This Month? Get in on the latest fashion trend by donating $1 or more in Room 218 or 219 to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You will receive a pink bracelet to wear during the month of October. The money will be donated to a cancer research organization. o Scoop on the Homecoming Dance The Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23 in the Big Gym. The exact times and ticket prices have not yet been set. Tickets will go on sale on Monday, Oct. 11. The theme for this year's dance, in keeping with the school's 100th anniversary, is "Dress thru the Decades". Students should dress in the attire of any specific decade - within the dress code rules, of course. Here's some tips on the dance (assuming it is like last year): - ALL grade levels should come: Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors - No dates are needed - in fact, most people come with friends - Dress is casual; students are encouraged to dress in the theme. - You need to meet certain grade/behavior criteria to be eligible to attend the dance. (They'll be checking a "no go" list before selling you your ticket.) - If you want to bring a guest that does not attend RUHS, you have to complete a special application. - Photos will be available at the dance. Some of the packages are pretty expensive, but there is a group photo option that is reasonable and a fun memory. o Homecoming Court Nominations End Tuesday Who can run for homecoming court? Student are eligible if they have at least a 3.0 GPA, good attendance, and no U's in citizenship and they are willing to attend the homecoming activities listed on the back of the application. Junior and Senior applicants must additionally have a history of involvement in extra curricular activities at RUHS. You can nominate yourself or a friend can nominate you. Pick up an application from Room 219. Completed applications must be returned by 3:30pm on Tuesday, Oct. 5. o Carne Asada Kick Off Dinner Before Football Game on Friday Come out for an easy dinner option before attending the 2nd home football game of the season on Friday, Oct. 8. Someone (I assume the Athletic Boosters, but I couldn't verify that) is sponsoring a Carne Asada dinner fundraiser. Service starts at 5pm in the area to your left as you enter the stadium from the home side on Vincent. The price is $20 for adults and $15 for children/students. The price includes dinner, a drink, and a raffle ticket. The raffle prizes include a surf board, a bike, and a trip to Las Vegas. o Check on Your Student's Bus Etiquette Two busses refused to pick up Redondo students last Wednesday due to inappropriate behavior by the students. Apparently there is a bit of a "mini-riot" each day as the kids push to get on the bus; some students are also rude to the drivers. The drivers decided to exercise their right to refuse service to anyone and didn't even open the doors that day. The following day, an MTA supervisor was at the stop and ensured the students lined up in a orderly fashion to enter the bus. PLEASE remind your students to act appropriately when taking the bus. Their behavior can impact everyone's ability to get home in a safe and timely fashion. o Planning to Play a Winter Sport? Turn in Athletic Package Now. If you plan on trying out for a winter sport, you must complete an Athletic Packet and turn it in to the Athletic Secretary unless you were already cleared for a fall sport. o Last Chance to Get Free ID Card and Photo in Yearbook Your last chance to get your photo taken for the yearbook and get your ID card for free is this Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 5 & 6. You need to schedule an appointment in Room 202. A list of the students that need to be photographed is available from a link on the on-line bulletin, http://bnet.org/ruhs/, titled: "Student Picture Make-ups/Retakes". o Senior Meeting and Free BBQ Monday Seniors will be excused from class at 11:30am on Monday, Oct. 4, for a Senior meeting, free barbecue, and class panoramic picture at the Auditorium. o Juniors and Sophs - Sign up Now for PSAT Test The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16, at 8am at RUHS. It is suggested that all college bound Juniors and motivated Sophomores take this exam. The cost of the exam is $15 (cash or checks payable to RUHS). Sign up through Oct. 13 in Room 202. Space is limited so act quickly. o Enter to Win $10,000 College Scholarship from Kaplan Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors can fill out an entry card for a chance to win a $10,000 college scholarship from Kaplan. Forms are available in the Career Center. o Send Letters to Help Get Money to Rebuild North RB Library Redondo Beach is competing with several other communities to get state money needed to rebuild our North Redondo library. A California Library bond passed in 2000; there is currently $77 million left in the bond account. Our library is applying for $3.4 million. There are 72 competing projects totaling $586 million, so not everyone is going to get funded. If you want to help ensure Redondo Beach gets a share of the bond money, you are encouraged to write letters to 6 different people. See http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/Library.html for sample letters. You need only add the date and your name and sign them. If you want to save postage, just drop them off at the North branch of the library. They have a box where they are collecting letters. Laura Emdee of the Redondo Beach PTA Council and Jean Scully of the library will be traveling to Sacramento on Oct. 14 to meet with the bond committee, so please get your letters in quickly. You can contact Laura at 370-0200 x03 or le@beyondincentives.com. o Learn to Animate or be an Orange Man Beach Cities Robotics Team 294 is looking for someone interested in learning 3DMax to create an animation for a competition. The team also needs students to create an Orange Man Group (similar to Blue Man Group) that will interact at exhibitions and competitions. For more info, contact Cheryl at 318-7901 or cheryl@bcrobotics.org. Check out the team's website at http://www.bcrobotics.org. In case you need some inspiration on that Orange Man Group thing, check http://www.blueman.com/. o Sign up for Robotics Academy at El Camino El Camino College offers a Robotics Academy. Construct, test and operate functional robots during this eight week Saturday course. Application packets are available in the Career Center. Deadline to apply is Oct. 11. o RUHS Centennial Committee Building Base of Volunteers The RUHS Centennial Celebration Committee is looking for 100 volunteers to help out in large and small ways with the festivities to celebrate RUHS's 100th birthday. Please contact Liz Beam at 414-0068 or liz@pbjenterprises.com to get on her list. For more info: http://www.ruhsalumni.org/load.php?vs=alumEvents&vb=celeb100. o Volunteers Needed to Help at College Fair on Oct. 28 The PTSA has been asked to help round up help for the big College Fair being held at RUHS the evening of Thursday, Oct. 28, in the Big Gym. There are a LOT of volunteer slots to fill including set up, event work, and clean up for the Fair itself and help with a dinner for the college representatives. Please contact Marianne Carlton-Felix, PTSA Volunteer Coordinator, at mcarlton@kpmg.com if you can help. The dinner is from 5:30-6:30pm and the Fair is from 7-9pm to give you an idea of the times involved.
