Under California, pick the sport of interest, then Southern Section, then Bay League. CIF playoff information: http://www.cifss.org/. Click on "Playoffs" at the top, then "Football (11 man)", then Div. III at the bottom of the page. o Bus Changes Coming Up - Must Apply for New Card Beach Cities Transit (BCT) will begin running a new bus service starting Jan. 1. This service will essentially replace the MTA 215 route that many North Redondo students use to get back and forth to school. At first glance, it appears the schedule, route, and cost will be similar to MTA; I will pass on more details as they become available. The City of Redondo Beach will definitely be offering an $8 monthly pass to its residents. The bad news is that you will need to apply for a new card. The application indicates you should expect to wait 20 days for the card to arrive, so you need to get the application in fairly soon to have it in hand when school picks up after the Winter Break. Students should go to the Attendance Office and request a BCT Bus Form that has been pre-signed by a school official. (Ms. Wesley, Assistant Principal, gave the form to the Attendance Office last week, so they should have it in hand now.) You can view the form at http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/Student_Application.doc to review the requirements. The form does require a school signature, however, so if you choose to download the form and fill it out, your student will still need to take it to the Attendance Office for a signature before mailing it in. o Free Chemistry, Math, and Spanish Tutoring Available First quarter reports cards should be hitting your mailbox soon. If your students needs a little extra help getting their marks up, you might want to have them check out these various FREE tutoring options. Remember that quarter grades are not reported to colleges, only semester grades, so it is not too late to make a difference. Chemistry tutoring is now being offered in Room 122 on Wednesdays at lunch. For those wishing to help with the tutoring, you can receive community service hours. To tutor, you need to have completed CP Chemistry or higher. Math tutoring is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4pm in the library. This is an adult tutor provided by a grant from the South Bay Youth Project. Students need to sign up in order to take advantage of this program; ask the library receptionist as you enter the library for more information. I think the Math Club also sometimes offers lunch time student tutoring; watch the bulletin for dates: http://ruhs.bnet.org/. (The club section of the bulletin is displaying "oddly" right now but, hopefully, it will get fixed soon. I have pointed out the problem to contacts at the school.) The Spanish Club offers tutoring during most of their Monday lunch-time meetings. Again, watch the bulletin for dates and location. It looks like their meeting has been canceled for this week - although it is hard to tell due to the bulletin problems. o Sign up for Trip to Olvera Street The Spanish Club is sponsoring its annual trip to Olvera Street on Thursday, Dec. 16, from 4:30-9pm. Pick up a permission slip in Room 404 if you are interested. The cost is $10. o Faculty Roster On-line - Use it to Determine Email Addresses There's a list of the faculty members now available on-line at http://ruhs.bnet.org/academics/facultyroster.html. Given that the district has moved to a "standardized" email addressing scheme using the first initial and last name of each person (e.g., jdoe@bnet.org), you can use the roster to figure out email addresses for teachers. The list also includes room numbers. o Career Center Looking for Bingo Volunteers Next Sunday The Career Center is looking for 2 more volunteers to help work their bingo date on Sunday, Nov. 28, from 2:30-5:30pm. Marianne Carlton-Felix, PTSA Volunteer Coordinator, is helping them find volunteers, so please contact her at mcarlton@kpmg.com if you can help out. o What is the Career Center? The Career Center is an asset at the school that helps our students find out about colleges, apply for scholarships, learn about vocational programs, etc. If you are not taking advantage of the Career Center, you should be. Don't be fooled into paying an outside organization for the same resources that you can get for free in the Career Center. To learn more about the Career Center, check http://www.bnet.org/ruhs/web3/academics/ccenter/. Also, read their section in the on-line bulletin regularly to learn about scholarship opportunities, SAT/ACT test deadlines, and much more. o What is this Bingo Thing About? Redondo Seahawk Booster's Bingo provides an opportunity for many organizations at the school to earn funding for various special projects. If you like to play bingo, or know someone who does, help support the program by playing Sundays from noon-6pm or Tuesday from 4:30-10pm. The Bingo Hall is located on Diamond Street near the Science Building. o Library Needs Parent Help Preparing Books The library is looking for parents to help tape the bindings of books before they put them out on the shelves. Contact Pam Stanton at 798-8665, ext. 2028 to volunteer. Your help would be appreciated any time during school hours. o El Camino Registration Open for Winter and Spring Some RUHS students elect to take classes at El Camino College (ECC) for high school credit. Registration is now open at ECC for Winter and Spring. See your counselor to get approval before signing up for classes or you might not get credit. You will need to complete a K-12 Authorization Form which is available in the Career Center or from your counselor. The El Camino website is http://www.elcamino.edu/. o New! No Right Turns on Red - Don't Get a Ticket The City of Redondo Beach is currently implementing "no right turn on red" at several corners in the city. Their reasoning is to better protect students near the schools (you probably know that the city recently dropped funding for many of the safety guards near the schools). So, watch for the new signs to avoid a costly ticket and an annoying visit to traffic school. Here are the proposed corners that will probably be affected: - Beryl at Maria (east & west bound) - Beryl at Prospect (east bound only) - Prospect at Knob Hill (north & south bound) - Grant at Green (both directions on Grant, south bound on Green) - Grant at Rindge (all 4 directions) - Grant at Slauson (all 4 directions) - Grant at Mackay (all 4 directions) - Grant at Felton (all 4 directions) - Grant at Aviation/Ormond (all 4 directions) - Artesia at Felton (all 4 directions) o Parent Nominations Open for School Site Commission There is one parent position open on the School Site Commission (SSC) and the school is actively seeking nominations through Nov. 30. Please send an email to Veronica Cooper at vcooper@bnet.org to apply; include your name, address, phone number, email address, and a mini-bio. The first commission meeting will be Monday, Dec. 13, with subsequent meetings held the third Monday of the month at 3:15pm in Room 203. The election will be held via the "RUHS Email" distribution list. See the SSC by-laws at: http://ruhs.bnet.org/web3/life/ssc/SSC_by-laws. o PTA Recommends You Tell Congress to Increase Education Funding Congress will soon be voting on education funding for 2005. The national PTA organization is concerned that Congress could apply an across-the-board education CUT. The PTA recommends that you contact your congress representatives to tell them to increase education funding. For details and methods of contact, see http://capwiz.com/npta2/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=6660841. CAREER CENTER CONGRATULATIONS o Rebecca Sopp qualified for CIF Southern Section Finals in cross county taking 6th place in the CIF preliminaries with a time of 19:06. o The Girls Varsity Volleyball Team advanced to the CIF semi-finals before being beaten by San Marcos. They ended their season with 25 wins and 10 losses, a school record for the program. o The Boys Varsity Football Team won their 1st round of CIF games against Paramount 34-16. They'll face St. Francis in an away game this Friday, Nov. 26 for the 2nd round. o Chloe Siu placed 4th among all Seniors at last week's Bay Math League Meet. Over 200 students from 10 schools participated. ABOUT THIS EMAIL: The intent of this email is to communicate information about RUHS on a weekly basis during the school year.
