A new "High Tide", the student newspaper, came out on Friday, Nov. 10. Catch articles such as "Cast prepares for opening of fall play", "CAML contest attacts more students than tests available", and "Signatures on senior contracts important." There is an interesting feature page on some of the new clubs at the school (spirit club for sports not usually highly attended, honors art club, salsa dancing club, and video game club) as well as a step by step guide on how to start a new club. Another feature page has stories on how 3 students have found ways to shorten their high school stay. The back sports page discusses the fall teams that did (and did not) qualify for CIF playoffs this year. A copy of the paper is distributed to all students in their classes. If somehow this valuable resource never makes it into your hands, be sure to read it on-line at http://my.highschooljournalism.org/ca/redondobeach/ruhs/. The Oct. 22 edition is showing now, but I'm sure the new paper will be posted soon. o Leader for a Day Applications Now Available Leader for a Day applications are now available from your counselor. Leader for a Day is sponsored by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce and offers RUHS students a chance to become leaders of the city (mayor, council member, fire chief, police chief, treasurer, city attorney, and more) on Thursday, Feb. 24 during a mock City Council Meeting. Applications are due on Friday, Dec. 3. Students must agree to attend an orientation in mid-January as well as the Feb. 24 event. o Juniors: Sacramento Safari Applications Out this Week The PTSA will be handing out applications for Sacramento Safari to Juniors this week during classes. Sacramento Safari is a 3-day informative and educational event to be held March 15-17 in Sacramento. The chosen student will get to experience the working of the California Legislature. The PTSA sponsors one Junior to attend this event each year. o Students of the Month November was the first month that Students of the Month were named. All teachers were given the opportunity to nominate a student who is excelling in a class, has shown progress, or deserves recognition for a good deed. A total of 24 students were named Student of the Month for November The students were invited to a breakfast where Ms. Little and Mr. Casillas presented awards and the ASB gave each student a gift bag with candy and a RUHS pencil. There was also a drawing where 5 students won a gift certificate to Starbucks. o Did Your Attendance Habits Contribute to Loss of $1.2 Million? Daily attendance is a critical factor in school funding. Here are a few facts: - Our school district lost $1.2 million dollars last year due to absences. - The school district gets paid $29.24 per day per student attending school. - 80% of school budgets from the state come from Average Daily Attendance (ADA). - The state pays our school district for actual attendance, not enrollment. - The school district does not receive funding from the state when a student is out for personal reasons, doctor appointments, dentist appointments, or vacations. - The school district does not even receive funding when a student is out due to illness. The benefits of regular attendance are obvious: students do not miss out on direct classroom instruction, they can ask questions to ensure understanding, students and teachers are not burdened with make-up work, and students are taught life skills about the importance of attendance and punctuality. Students should NOT come to school sick, but they should be there every day if they are not ill. You should never schedule vacations or outings during school hours. Medical appointments during school hours should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. If you can make critical appointments after 10:30am, the district will at least be paid for the day. To cut down on illnesses, help your kids stay healthy by ensuring they have good eating habits and get enough sleep. Given the current budget crunch of our school district, we need every penny. Consider donating back the $29.24 per day lost due to any absence of your child. CONGRATULATIONS o Alex Willen was Redondo's top scorer on the first CAML contest of the year. o Mirko Antich placed 2nd in an artist contest celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Union Bank of California awarded him $500. Finalists Jackie Hernandez, Eunice Kim, Monica Eisenbeisz, and Theo Polizzi received prize packages from Staples, the contest sponsor.
