Please send an email to Veronica Cooper at vcooper@bnet.org to apply; include your name, address, phone number, email address, and a mini-bio. The first commission meeting will be Monday, Dec. 13, with subsequent meetings held the third Monday of the month at 3:15pm in Room 203. The election will be held via the "RUHS Email" distribution list. As background, from the by-laws, the purpose of the SSC is "to act as an advisory board to the principal(s) on any and all matters concerning the strengthening of the academic, social, safe and athletic environment of the school." Membership includes the co-principals, 1 Counselor, 4 classroom teachers, 1 classified staff member, 3 parents of current students, 3 students, and 1 to 2 community members. There is also 1 alternate member for most of the positions. To review the complete SSC by-laws, check http://ruhs.bnet.org/web3/life/ssc/SSC_by-laws. o 1st Quarter Ends Wednesday - How's Your Citizenship? The first quarter ends this Wednesday. Hard to believe that we are 1/4 through the year already. Quarter grades do not count toward a student's GPA, so encourage your students to bring up their marks before the first semester ends on Feb. 4. Did you know that tardies and truancies are tied to the citizenship grade? Four or more tardies in a class in a given quarter results in a "U" in citizenship. Students that earn below a 2.0 GPA or have 2 or more "U"s in citizenship get placed on the "NO GO List". The new list will be generated after all grades are submitted by the teachers. Students on the list are not allowed to attend school events including athletics and drama productions. o What are Quarter Exams? You might have noticed "Quarter Exams" listed on the on-line calendar and wondered what this was about. It seems that most teachers elect NOT to give quarter exams. The ones that do should have already informed their students. As early warning, semester exams ARE a big deal at the high school level. They are scheduled for Feb. 1-3. o Academic Letter Night Tuesday Academic Letter Night is Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7pm in the small gym. Juniors and Seniors meeting the criteria below should have received an invitation to this event. The awards are sponsored by the RUHS PTSA to recognize academic excellence. - Juniors who have completed at least 120 credits during their Freshman and Sophomore years with an overall weighted GPA of at least 3.3 receive an Academic Letter. - Seniors that have maintained a 3.3 GPA for 6 semesters receive a pin. - Seniors that did not receive a letter their Junior year, can receive one their Senior year if they maintain a 3.3 GPA for 4 semesters. - Students must have attended RUHS for at least a year and, if applicable, been in good standing at their previous school. If you feel you qualify and did not receive an invitation, see Ms. Wesley. o Romeo & Juliet Presale Tickets Available for $5 Presale tickets for the upcoming RUHS Performing Arts Department production of "Romeo and Juliet" are available for the low price of $5 from any cast member. The play will be running from Nov. 17-20 at 7pm in the RUHS Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at the door for $6 to $8. Many English teachers are giving extra credit for attending. o Seniors - Brag Sheet and Essay for Scholarship Folder Due Seniors, don't forget that your Scholarship Information Form (Brag Sheet) and Essay are NOW due to the Career Center for your Scholarship Folder. You also need to request recommendation letters from 3 individuals. The Info Sheet is available on-line at http://ruhs.bnet.org/web3/academics/ccenter/infosheet.doc. Remember that completing a scholarship folder enters you for more than 100 different local community scholarships. The information collected also helps you to complete college and other private and national scholarship applications. Review the Senior Newsletter at http://ruhs.bnet.org/web3/academics/ccenter/seniornew2004.doc to see more information on the folder as well as other important dates for Seniors. o UC and Impacted CSU Application Deadline Nov. 30 Seniors, if you plan to apply to any UC school or to an impacted CSU campus, your application must be postmarked by 11:59pm, Nov. 30. There are NO EXCEPTIONS! To get help completing your UC application, go to the Career Center at lunch on Monday, Nov. 8, to get step by step instructions. o Dates for CAHSEE (CA High School Exit Exam) The dates of Nov. 16-17 listed on the on-line calendar for the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exams) are incorrect. The correct dates are Feb. 8-9 for Juniors that did not pass the exam last year and Mar. 15-16 for Sophomores. In case you were not aware, California high school students must pass this exam before they are allowed to graduate. For more info, check http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/. o Class of 2005 Grad Night Parent Meeting Nov. 18 Helpers are needed to put on Grad Night for this year's Senior class. Please attend the Parent Meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 7pm in Room 203. Contact Gabriele West-Adams at 372-8690 or Pete Tepus at 963-2086 for more info. Grad Night is a fabulous all night alcohol and drug free event for Seniors on graduation night. Grad Night tickets are already on sale for $40 from Mrs. Bassine in the Admin Building. The price goes up as the year progresses, so buy now. o Redondo Education Society Founded by RB Ed Foundation As part of their community fundraising efforts, RBEF (Redondo Beach Education Foundation) has founded the Redondo Education Society to honor individuals and small business owners who make donations of $1,000 or more to RBEF. Members will be invited to 2 receptions each year in their honor and will receive 2 tickets to the gala. For a limited time, $1,000 donors will become Charter Members, with special honors, of the Redondo Education Society, so join now! Individuals who work for companies that match charitable donations can be Redondo Education Society members with only a $500 donation, plus $500 from their company. Please contact Marnie Woodward Levy at 379-7144 or mar@cyberverse.com if you are interested in becoming a member. For more on RBEF, see http://www.rbef.org. o Take the National PTA Survey on "No Child Left Behind" The National PTA is doing a survey on what people think about the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and how it has affected their schools. They intend to pass the results to Congress to help our legislators become more sensitive to concerns about NCLB. Take the survey at http://www.pta.org/ptawashington/. (I tried it, it was pretty simple; there were only 23 questions.) Data will be collected through Dec. 1 after which the survey results will be available on the same website.
