At the town hall meeting last Tuesday, a list of the items currently under consideration to be cut was presented and members of the audience were allowed to speak for up to 3 minutes each on their concerns. The board members listened only; they did not give any feedback. The majority of audience comments related to elementary school issues (shared principal, vocal music, GATE). The items on the list that could definitely affect the high school, if adopted, are: - Reduce 7 high school certified positions (i.e., teachers) through attrition - Eliminate Site Tech Specialists - Eliminate RUHS Library Clerk - Reduce school site budgets by 5% - Reduce RUHS Auditorium Manager by 50% - Reduce night time custodians See the entire list of items under reduction consideration at: http://www.rbusd.org/2004-05%20POSSIBLE%20BUDGET%20REDUCTIONS-WEB.pdf. Read this week's "Easy Reader" article on the town hall meeting at: http://easyreader.hermosawave.net/news2002/storypage.asp?StoryID=20024115&IssuePath=news2004/0520/. If you have an opinion on these items, you can email your comments to the school board at info@rbusd.org. The agenda for the board meeting this Tuesday at 6:30pm at the district offices does not include the cuts, but the public is always allowed to make general statements. There will be other meetings on this topic; watch for those dates and attend the meetings if you are concerned about the cuts. o ASB Election Results The ASB election results for next year's terms were: - ASB Cabinet: Tyler Nazarian, Nicole Perry, David Ammentorp - Class Officers: + Senior: Carley Lucio, Stephanie Sartori, Sean Finley + Junior: Angel Sales, Katy Lunny, Julie Tran + Sophomore: Brittany Gomeztrejo, Cailee Mellen o High Tide Published May 21 A new edition of the student newspaper, "High Tide", hit the streets on Friday, May 21. As always, you should try to get your hands on a copy as it is filled with good information. Headlines include "EAs rework advisement system", "Bill proposes restriction on teen drivers", and "UCs defer applicants to community colleges". o EAs Moving to Alphabetic Assignment Starting June 1, students will be assigned an EA (Educational Advisor) based on last name. Previously, EAs were assigned by grade level (e.g., all current Juniors have had Ms. Turner as their EA since they were Freshmen). The reasoning for the new method is that the current and incoming Freshmen classes are much larger than the other classes so the students need to be distributed more evenly. My understanding is that parents should be receiving a letter in the mail with more details. You might also want to read the article "EAs rework advisement system" and the editorial "Reassignment of students to EAs is beneficial to all" in the May 21 edition of the "High Tide". o Senior Excursion - Last Week to Buy Tickets Friday, May 28, is the last day to buy Senior Excursion tickets for $60 in Room 202. Students are not allowed to switch to a different bus once they have signed up; students should sign up with their friends to ensure that they are on the same bus. As a reminder, the Senior Excursion is to Disneyland. The bus leaves on Thursday, June 3 at 9:30pm with an early morning return on Friday, June 4. o Did you Order Your Yearbook Yet? You can still order a yearbook in Room 202 for $90, but hurry because there are a limited number available. Yearbooks will be distributed around June 10. Students will need their ID card to pick up their yearbook. o SCROC Job Fair, June 9 The 9th Annual SCROC (Southern California Regional Occupation Center) Job Fair is Wednesday, June 9th from 8:30am-12:30pm with 70+ employers on-site to meet and interview job seekers. It will be held on the front lawn of SCROC. For more details, check http://www.scroc.com/jobfair.htm. o Return Textbooks No Longer Needed Now All textbooks must be turned in after your final exams, but you are encouraged to return books now to the library if you are no longer using them. Seniors, remember your records must be clear in order to receive your diploma after graduation. o Make Your Reservations Online for RB Ed Foundation Gala Make your reservations for the RB Ed Foundation (RBEF) "Cruising Into Summer" gala at http://www.rbef.org. The event is Saturday, June 19, from 6-10pm at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center; tickets are $65 each. The Ed Foundation strongly encourages online payment, but, if preferred, you can send a check to: RBEF, 200 N. Pacific Coast Hwy, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. You can download an order form from http://geocities.com/ruhs_email. This is a ticketless event; there will a list at the door of those that made reservations. o Check the On-Line Bulletin Now http://ruhs.bnet.org/ CONGRATULATIONS o The Boys Volleyball Team shared the championship title of the Bay League with Mira Costa. In last week's email, I incorrectly stated that the team finished 2nd in their division by a coin toss. In actuality, the coin toss was only for the purpose of the play off seeding in the CIF games. I apologize for the confusion. o Josh Finke won 1st place in photography at the 36th Congressional District High School Art Competition. Congress representative Jane Harman presented the awards to schools from the South Bay last Saturday at the Manhattan Beach Creative Arts Center. o The "High Tide" school newspaper placed 5th at the SCJEA (Southern California Journalism Education Association) Write-Offs held May 15 at El Camino College. The best journalism students from 7 California counties competed. RUHS individuals that placed were: Steven Turrill, 3rd place, Features; Nick Spear, 3rd place, News; Megan Briggs, 7th place, News; and Hannah Chung, 9th place, News.
