The trick to getting to the schedules on highschoolsports.net is to pick your sport of interest and then click the red link above the photo area that says "Scores". The schedule for that sport then comes up. Use http://ruhs.bnet.org/athletics/ to get to the RUHS sports page. If you prefer to go directly to the highschoolsport.net page, try: http://www.highschoolsports.net/snschool.asp?SelSchool=00CA90277000&B3=New+Schedule o ASB Election Applications Due Friday ASB Elections will be held on Wednesday, May 19, in Room 219 from 7am-4pm. Students must register to vote in advance with their first period teacher plus bring their ID to the polls. Election application packets are now available in Room 219; they must be completed and returned by Friday, May 7. Students interested in any ASB position (ASB Officers, Class Officers, and appointed positions) must complete an election packet. Interviews will be held on May 10-11 and speeches will be given on May 17-18. See page 29 of the planner for more information on what ASB (Associated Student Body) and Student Senate is about. You should also read the article in the April 30 "High Tide" for more details on the new election process and new ASB goals. o Teacher Appreciation Week - Say Thanks to Your Teachers RUHS is celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week this week. Take a moment and say thanks to the teachers that are special to you! The PTSA is sponsoring a breakfast on Friday, May 7, for both the RUHS and Redondo Shores teachers. They could use some volunteers to help out at the event. Contact Monica Perez at 809-6621 or Anita Avrick at anitapta@adelphia.net if you are available. o New "High Tide" Student Newspaper Out Did you get a copy of the "High Tide" student newspaper distributed on Friday, April 30? As always this is a good way to find out more about what is going on at the school and in the heads of our teenagers. Some of the articles in this edition include: "ASB creating new voting procedure", "District bans student use of camera phones", and "Seniors protest UC rejections through official appeals process." There are also 3 sports pages, 2 opinion pages, an entertainment page, features on 2 talented RUHS students (Genevieve Williams and Heather Bingen), an in-depth article on the "Teen Scene" and more. If your student isn't bringing home this newspaper, nag them to do it. It is distributed to the classrooms so they should be getting a copy. o Luau with the Girls Basketball Team on May 22 The Girls Basketball Team will be putting on their first annual Luau on Saturday, May 22. Dinner starts at 4pm followed by a Hawaii Show at 6:30pm. Pre-sale tickets cost $20; tickets will be $25 at the door. See any member of the girls basketball team to buy a ticket. Various workshops such as Financial Aid, Scholarship Info, and Career Exploration will be held, plus there will be an opportunity to learn more about El Camino's academic and vocational programs. Juniors and Seniors are invited to sign up for this field trip in the Career Center. Hurry - the field trip is limited to the first 55 students that sign up. o Summer School Options As a reminder, RUHS will only be offering remedial summer school this year due to the budget crunch. Fee based athletic summer school programs will again be offered at RUHS under the auspices of SportsWorld. The cost is $120 per class. This year, unlike last year, the school's certified coaches will be used as instructors so students will receive high school credit for the sports classes. (The district indicates that students will not be turned away from these programs if they cannot afford the fee.) There are other options for picking up additional classes over the summer. Students should check with their EA to ensure the class of interest will be counted for high school credit in our district before signing up. - Marymount College will offer summer classes for high school students at Hull Middle School in Torrance and Peninsula High. See http://www.marymountpv.edu/summerschool/index.asp for course information. - El Camino College is now accepting admission applications for the Summer semester. There is more information available in the Career Center plus you can check the summer catalog at http://www.elcamino.edu/schedule/Index.htm. - Summer SCROC (Southern California Regional Occupational Center) job training classes run June 21 - July 30. The classes and bussing are free and students can earn up to 10 credits. This session is the first opportunity for current Sophomores to participate and the last chance for Seniors to obtain free training. Each Thursday, Marlene Van Ert is in the Career Center during lunch to provide information regarding SCROC. You can also contact her at www.mvanert@SCROC.K.2.ca.us.
