If you click on the first item in the list, "Sports Schedules", you get options for various team/season schedules. o New High Tide Student Newspaper Out The latest edition of the student newspaper, "High Tide" hit the streets on March 23. There is a LOT of interesting information including the following articles: "MTA might cancel South Bay bus line", "Little attributes increasing API scores to schoolwide effort", and "Meeting readdresses safety issues" plus lots of photos from the Battle of the Bands, "Damn Yankees" and sports. The newspaper is distributed in the classrooms so every student should get one. If your child isn't sharing it with you, ask them about it. Writers from the "High Tide" recently took first place in the Southern California Journalism Education Association's write-off competition. Seven writers advanced to the state competition on May 15. o Drop off Memorabilia for Senior Time Capsule Students, teachers, coaches, staff, and parents - please drop off memorabilia for the Senior class time capsule to Mrs. Bassine in the Administration Building. The capsule will accommodate up to footlocker sized items and will be opened at the 10-year reunion in 2014. Examples of appropriate items are souvenirs, programs, tickets from sporting events, plays, clubs, dances, school publications, etc. o Apply for 2004-2005 Dance Guard or Dance Team Applications for the 2004-2005 Dance Guard are now available in Room 3 or Room 219. Tryouts will be April 19-23 in the South Gym. If you have any questions, contact Ms. Riccio at 798-8665, x2042. Some previous dance background is preferred, but not required. Dance Team applications are also now available from Ms. Lisle in the Girls' Gym; tryouts will be April 12-16. o PTSA Election Thursday Voting for next year's PTSA board will take place on Thursday, April 1, in the Library at 6:30pm. If you have any questions or want to run for a position on the board, contact Anita Avrick at anitapta@adelphia.net. o JROTC Drill Meet Saturday, April 3 The West Coast National Jr. ROTC Drill Meet is Saturday, April 3, from 7:45am-5pm at Raytheon at 2000 E. El Segundo Blvd. in El Segundo. There are over 50 schools and 2000 cadets participating in the competition. There will be military aircraft, tanks, and other interesting displays. The Navy will do a flyover in an F-18 at approximately 11:30am followed by an Army Air Assault Team dropping out of a helicopter. Raytheon will be displaying technology products and the Beach Cities Robotics Team will demonstrate their skills. The RUHS JROTC is sponsoring the Drill Meet. They have spent a year working with the military services, community members, and local governments and will be helping at the event throughout the day. RUHS has two teams participating in the meet; at 8:15am our 4 person Armed Drill Team will perform and, at 9am, our 4 person Unarmed Drill Team will take the field. Spectators are invited to bring new or used DVDs and paperback books, which Raytheon will distribute to U.S. troops stationed overseas. o Free SAT Practice Tests Kaplan offers free SAT practice tests to high school students. Upcoming dates are April 17 at Westwood or Loyola Marymount and April 24 at Westwood or the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. A College Forum will be held May 1 at Loyola Marymount.
