They beat arch rival (and #1 seed in the tournament) Mira Costa to play the host school for the championship. Last Monday, the team won the Pre-Season Invitational Tournament held at RUHS (28 teams participated). This is the first time that Redondo ever won the whole tournament. Looks like it should be a great year for Coach Chaffin and his team! - Girls Basketball Team Wins Regional Quarterfinals The girls basketball team beat Redwood of Visalia 64-41 on Tuesday in the CIF Division II Southern California Regional quarterfinals. The team ended their tremendous run Thursday night, losing to Mount Miguel 50-56 in overtime in the regional semifinals. o Sophomores: Do You Know Your Rooms for CAHSEE? All Sophomores will be taking the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) on Tuesday and Wednesday this week from 7:55-12:20pm. Make sure that your student knows what room number they have been assigned to. Most kids will have the same room assignment for both Tuesday and Wednesday, but some will have a different room on Wednesday. Have them ask their English or History teacher on Monday if they don't know their rooms. Also, make sure they bring two #2 pencils, a snack, and something to read if they finish early. o New Student Newspaper Out The latest edition of the student newspaper, "High Tide", hit the streets on Friday, Mar. 11. The headlines include: "ASB raises money for charities", "Candidates voice opinions on local issues", and "Drama department prepares to compete at Fullerton College". There's lots of sports news including Spring sports previews and Winter sports most valuable players. There is good stuff in here so be sure to ask your student to see the copy they should have received in class. This edition is also already on-line at http://my.highschooljournalism.org/ca/redondobeach/ruhs/. o PTSA 05/06 Board Members Needed The RUHS PTSA is looking for people willing to serve on the board next school year. Please contact Anita Avrick at 376-5719 or anitapta@adelphia.net if you can help out. Remember that the PTSA provides funding for field trip busses, hosts student recognition programs, as well as sponsoring this email. Joining the PTSA board could be a good way for you to get more involved in your student's school. o Pizza Meeting Kick Off for Pier-to-Pier Walkathon Volunteers Students interested in assisting with the upcoming Pier-to-Pier Walkathon are invited to a meeting with free pizza at Roundtable Pizza on Wednesday, Mar. 16. Go to Room 219 to find out more. The ASB is coordinating the RUHS participation in this fundraiser. Freshmen, this is a good way to start working on your community service hours. The Walk-a-thon will be held on Saturday, Apr. 30, and is a fundraiser for the Richstone Family Center. For more information, see http://www.richstone.com/events/index.html. o 10 Host Families Still Needed for Mexico City Student Exchange Over 50 students from Mexico City will be coming to Redondo from April 18-May 1. Ten students, both boys and girls, still need host families. Please contact Connie Smith at 798-8665 x2404, 293-3234 (cell), or csmith@bnet.org if you can help. This is a great opportunity to reinforce your student's Spanish skills and learn about another culture. o Start Thinking About Summer Opportunities It's getting to be that time of year to start thinking about summer plans. Here's a few early thoughts: - I suspect our district, due to continuing budget constraints, will only offer remedial summer school again this year, but there are other summer school options in the area: + El Camino's Summer Schedule is out: http://www.elcamino.edu o On-line heath class at El Camino: http://youth.net/ecc/ + Marymount College - classes taught at Torrance schools: http://www.marymountpv.edu/community/summer.asp - It is absolutely CRITICAL to check with your counselor before signing up for a class you assume will get high school credit! You would not want to find out after the fact that it doesn't count. - UCLA opens enrollments to high school students in the summer. In addition to regular classes, they have several special institutes designed especially for high school students. This year, UCLA is offering a Summer Music Academy, a Mock Trial Institute, and a program in Design and Media Arts, among others. Most of these programs are credit bearing and high school students can choose to live at UCLA during their studies if they wish. See http://www.summer.ucla.edu/ for details. - Sportsworld will be conducting summer sports classes at RUHS again. I hear an orientation meeting will be held in May. - Read the RUHS on-line bulletin, http://ruhs.bnet.org, daily for announcements on interesting summer opportunities. Examples of recent items: + Summer Law Institute at UCLA for incoming 10th-12th graders, July 31-Aug. 6, live on campus, see Ms. Wesley or Ms. Frith for application or download from http://www.crf-usa.org/, deadline to apply Apr. 8, $1,100 + Hollywood Bowl has part time summer employment openings for students 16 years and older. Information and applications online at http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/. Flyer in the Career Center. + UC Davis Young Scholars Program for current Sophomores and Juniors is a six-week summer research program in biological, agricultural, and environmental sciences. Information at http://ysp.ucdavis.edu. o Safety Tips A RUHS parent that previously taught self defense classes, asked me to pass on these two simple safety tips: - Have your kids program 379-5411, the direct dispatch line into the Redondo Beach Police Department, into their cell phones. The officers say it will get a faster response than 911. - Teach your kids to "use the wave" if they are alone and feel uncomfortable about an approach by a stranger. Wave and hold up 2 fingers indicating "just a minute" to a vague area in the distance giving the impression that you are with someone else close by and then walk toward the area. This technique worked recently for the 15-year old daughter of the Mom providing this tip. ONGOING FUNDRAISERS: o Order RUHS Sweatshirts, Sammy Sea Hawks, License Frames, and Window Decals to benefit RUHS PTSA: http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/Spirit_Items_04-05.doc o Target: http://target.com/target_group/schools/search_school.jhtml School ID: 29328 o When you buy anything at Office Depot, ask them to give credit to RUHS. The cashier will look up the school code. [Last week, I incorrectly said HOME Depot instead of OFFICE Depot. I apologize for the confusion.] o Albertsons/Sav-On: http://www.albertsons.com/abs_inthecommunity/ RUHS PTSA Partner ID: 49001001722 CONGRATULATIONS: o The top scorers on last week's CAML contest were Jun Min, Andrew Kim, Nick Spear, and Brenda Moun. o Genevieve Williams was selected as RUHS's delegate to Girls State.
