The district must have a balanced budget by June 30 so decisions are going to be finalized soon. Check http://www.rbusd.org/page96.html for details on the items currently under consideration for cuts. The list was updated recently since the district is now expecting more revenue from the state. They are no longer considering sharing an elementary principal or increasing class size for kindergarten and have restored most of the elementary vocal music program. However, most of the high school items are still on the list and now comprise the significant majority of all the proposed cuts. - Reduce 7 high school teachers through attrition - Eliminate Site Tech Specialists - Eliminate RUHS Library Clerk - Reduce RUHS Auditorium Manager by 50% - Eliminate 1 night time custodian at RUHS There was a huge turn out of elementary parents at the first Town Hall meeting on this topic and, indeed, their "hot" items are now mostly off the list. I encourage our high school parents and students to turn out for the meeting on Tuesday to impress upon the school board that we too are concerned about our school. Less teachers, at a time the board predicts no drop in enrollment, translates to larger class sizes and fewer elective options. The turnout at last Wednesday's Study Session on the budget situation was rather small, but much of the discussion focused on the high school. Check the Channel 45 schedule to see if the tape of that meeting is showing to get more background. If you cannot attend the meeting on Tuesday, please send an email to the school board expressing your opinion on the budget cuts to info@rbusd.org. o Yearbook Distribution This Week Yearbook distribution for Seniors starts on Wednesday, June 9, before school (7am) and during lunch on the Senior Patio. Distribution of yearbooks for all grade levels (9-12) begins Wednesday after school from the lunch lines outside the cafeteria. Distribution will continue on Thursday before school, at snack, at lunch, and after school on the Senior Patio. Starting Friday, you can pick up your yearbook from Room 202 during normal office hours. o PTSA General Meeting Thursday There will be a PTSA meeting for the general membership on Thursday, June 10, at 6:30pm in the Noble Art Gallery (Science Building, Room 108). Snacks will be served. One highlight of the meeting will be the annual "Duck Race" - although due to the construction, it will just be a drawing this year. The PTSA Board Meeting will precede the General Meeting starting at 6pm. General members are welcome to attend the Board Meeting if desired. o RB Ed Foundation Pledges $50,000 Grant The Redondo Beach Education Foundation (RBEF) recently pledged $50,000 for the 2004-2005 school year to be directed at one or all of the following programs: Elementary Vocal Music, AVID, and Teacher Technology Training. This is separate from the Middle School Intramural Sports Program pledge made by the RBEF earlier this year. They hope to continue to support that program as well. Please support the Ed Foundation as they try to help our school district through these low budget years. The easiest, and most fun, way to do this is to come to the "Cruising Into Summer" gala at the Redondo Beach Performing Art Center on Saturday, June 19. Make your reservations, at $65 per person, from http://www.rbusd.org/RBEF.html. o Fall Athletes - Pick Up Your Clearance Packets Student athletes that plan on playing a Fall sport need to pick up an Athletic Clearance packet from the school receptionist, in Room 311-A, or from Mr. Congelliere. Incoming Freshmen playing a Fall sport need to be cleared in Room 311-A by the end of June. o AP Studio Art Student Pick Up Summer Assignment Next year's AP Studio Art students need to go to Room 120 to pick up summer assignments. o Clean Out Lockers by Last Day of School Be sure to clean out your lockers by the last day of school, June 16. All items left in lockers will be put in the trash. o Did you Receive Your El Camino Registration Date? If you applied for summer classes at El Camino and have NOT received a registration date to enroll in classes, call El Camino at 516-9339. o Check the On-Line Bulletin Now http://ruhs.bnet.org/ CONGRATULATIONS o Boys Tennis Team Takes CIF Tennis Title The Boys Tennis Team defeated Brentwood, 12-6, to win the school's first boys team tennis title in CIF Division IV. The team was undefeated this season (25-0), another first in school history. I liked this quote from Coach Jim Ball in a recent "Daily Breeze" article, "This is a local school with local kids who have just become champions."
