ONGOING FUNDRAISERS ABOUT THIS EMAIL QUICK REFERENCES ITEMS OF INTEREST: o Sports - General sports schedules http://www.highschoolsports.net o City Council Meeting Tuesday The topic of the school board issues with Dr. Leighty will apparently be a topic at the City Council meeting tonight, Tuesday, July 19, at 6:30pm in council chambers. While only a couple people will be speaking, you are encouraged to attend if you have an opinion on the topic. The meeting will also be broadcast live on Channel 8. o School Board Meeting July 26 on Leighty Termination At the special school board meeting held on July 12, the decision to terminate Dr. Leighty was postponed due to concerns about the legality of the meeting. Many public comments, overwhelmingly in support of Dr. Leighty, were, however, heard at that meeting. The date for the continuance of this topic appears to have settled on the regularly scheduled school board meeting on Tuesday, July 26 at 6:30pm. The meeting is being moved to a larger venue, the Washington School Cafeteria, due to the anticipated crowd. I'll be on vacation and won't be able to email any updates to the date, so check http://www.rbusd.org/BoardofEducation.html to keep apprised of scheduled school board meetings. Genie Lewis is a focal point for those that support Dr. Leighty. Contact her at EMLewis@aol.com to be put on her email contact list. For more background on this situation, you might want to read the "Easy Reader" coverage of the July 12 meeting. Scroll down to Redondo Beach and then click on the 3 parts of the story: http://easyreader.hermosawave.net/news2002/default.asp. Of particular interest is the fact that it would cost the district $240,000 to buy out Dr. Leighty's contract plus additional costs. The following contact information for the school board members is posted on the district website, if you'd like to let them know how you feel. o Carl Clark carlclark@bnet.org, 543-4788 o Drew Gamet agamet@aol.com o Todd Loewenstein Loew4567@yahoo.com o Arlene Staich arrscreen@aol.com o Jane Diehl: jdiehl90278@msn.com, 379-4628 o Freshmen Orientation Aug. 23 A Freshmen Orientation and Ice Cream Social will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 2pm in the Auditorium. The general agenda is as follows: - Introduction to the admin, counselors, and other staff - Brief overview of RUHS - What to expect on the first day - Tour of the school - Make your own ice cream sundae on the Auditorium lawn (chance for questions and mingling) This sounds like a great opportunity for Freshmen to get a running start. Don't miss it if at all possible! o Parent Help Needed at Registration The school needs 7-9 parents each day of registration to help with handing out schedules, checking out books, assisting with photos/IDs, etc. Registration is Monday thru Friday, Aug. 22-26, with a make-up day on Tuesday, Aug. 30. If you can help, please contact Ms. Wesley at nwesley@bnet.org to let her know your availability. Freshmen parents, this is a great way to start figuring out how things work at the high school and make contacts with the staff and other parents. The PTSA is also looking for people to work their table at registration. Contact Kathy Swift at swift_k@hotmail.com if you can help. o Seniors: Work on Scholarship Folders/Check Testing Dates Seniors, you should be working on the information sheet for your Scholarship Folder over the summer. Check the details at http://www.bnet.org/ruhs/web3/academics/ccenter/scholarshipinformation.html. It is also a good time to register for fall SAT and ACT tests as you'll want to complete your college testing early so you are ready to start sending in college applications. SAT information is available at http://www.collegeboard.com/. The first few testing dates are: Oct. 8, Nov. 5, and Dec. 3. Check http://www.actstudent.org/ for ACT information - the first few tests are Sept. 24, Oct. 22, and Dec. 10. The deadline to register is several weeks before each test, so some of the registration deadlines aren't as far away as you might think. o Don't Forget to Give RUHS Credit for Office Depot Buys If you do your Back to School shopping at Office Depot, don't forget to ask them to give RUHS credit for your purchases. They give a credit to the school for 5% of your bill. The cashier can easily look up the RUHS code, but, for your reference, it is 70012799. o Workers Needed for PTSA for Bingo on Aug. 16 The PTSA is working a bingo night on Tuesday, Aug. 16, and will need 10 volunteers. There are 2 shifts: 4:45-7:45pm and 7:30-10:30pm. Bingo provides a way for the PTSA to earn a quick $400 to get the year started. If you can help, contact Kathy Swift at swift_k@hotmail.com and let her know which shift you can work. o Mandatory Summer Reading Program/AP Assignments How're the summer projects going? Keep reminding your kids to get them done. See http://www.rbusd.org/SUMMERREADING.html for more details. o Win a Ride on the Goodyear Blimp The Grad Night 2007 Committee is raffling off 2 seats on the Goodyear Blimp. Check the details on the raffle at: http://bnet.org/ruhs/registration/Blimp%20Flyer.pdf. And, yes, this really is early fundraising for the Juniors. It takes a lot of effort and planning to put on Grad Night. Contact Lori Schreier at lschreier@adelphia.net or Laurie Meyer at kurtlaurie@adelphia.net if you would like to purchase tickets or are interested in joining the committee. o Ready to Get Off the Email List?
