Meet in Room 310 at lunch for information. New members are welcome. ITEMS OF INTEREST: o Check the RUHS Sports Schedules Go to the RUHS sports page: http://bnet.org/ruhs/web3/sports/ and then click on the first item in the list, "Sports Schedules". o Hear RUHS Safety Issues Findings on Monday at 6pm A Community Safety Meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 2, at 6pm in the RUHS Library. The findings of a safety consultant regarding safety issues at the high school will be discussed. You should have received a flyer in the mail regarding this meeting. Call Tracy Hattingh, Facilities and Safety Specialist, at 379-5449, x252 for additional information. o Pick Up 2nd Semester Schedule at 7am Monday, Feb. 2 Students should pick up their second semester schedules in the cafeteria starting at 7am on Monday, Feb. 2. You must have an official schedule to be admitted into your classes. There is a special line for those with a 0 period class so that they can get through quickly and get to their class. Note that the Late Start Day, originally scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2, has been canceled. First period will start at the regular time of 7:55am. o Need New Off Grounds Sticker for 2nd Semester If your student's 2nd semester schedule allows them to be off school grounds between the hours of 7:55am-2:55pm (e.g., they don't have a 6th period class), they need an "Off Grounds Sticker". If they are caught off grounds during those times and do not have a sticker, they will be considered truant. Even if they had a sticker for 1st semester, they need to get a new one since they are a different color. Students should see their Eduacation Advisor (EA) starting Wednesday, Feb. 4 to get the new sticker. A list of the EAs is included at the bottom of this email in the Quick Reference section. o SCROC Spring Classes Begin Monday Monday, Feb. 2, is the first day of spring classes at SCROC (Southern California Regional Occupational Center). Walk-ins are welcome. You can take a 1pm or 4pm job training class at no cost. Bussing from RUHS is included. For more information, send an email to mvanert@SCROC.k12.ca.us. Visit the SCROC website at http://www.scroc.com/. o Winter Fantasy Tickets Now on Sale Winter Fantasy tickets are now on sale in Room 219 or Room 3 (Ms. Riccio). Prices are $35 with an ASB card or $40 if you don't have a card. This formal dance will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 8pm to midnight at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The theme is "A Walk in the Clouds" and features a DJ and an amazing dessert buffet. Ticket prices will go up after Feb. 12 so buy now. Information on photo opportunities at the dance are included in the ticket. If you want to bring someone to the dance that is not a RUHS student, you need to get a guest pass; it is recommended that you get it ASAP. A Winter Court will be chosen as part of the dance ritual. Winter Court nomination forms are available in Room 219 or Room 3 and must be turned in to Ms. Riccio (Room 3) no later than Friday, Feb. 13. The scoop I get on appropriate attire for the dance is that the girls wear formals. Some boys wear tuxedos, but others just wear nice pants/shirt and maybe a jacket and tie. (Definitely NO jeans or shorts!) Some make it a date event, but a lot of kids come single or with a group of friends. o RUHS Math Team Revived this Year After being on hiatus since 1997, the RUHS Math Team is again active. Mr. Baumgartner credits Genevieve Williams for reviving the team as she competed on Penisula's team last year and wanted to keep going. The team has participated in 2 meets so far this year, with 2 more upcoming. At a competition, a "team" is made up of 10 students. The rules dictate at most 4 seniors with a maximum of 8 total seniors and juniors; this ensures there are at least 2 underclassmen on the team. There are 5 individual rounds at a meet, each geared to a particular grade level, plus a research topic. Each of these rounds consists of 3 questions. There is also a team round, where team members usually split into pairs to work on a question. RUHS sent a team and a half to the 2 meets. Sending the half team, our "B" team, allows students to gain experience. Two individuals. Chloe Siu and Genevieve Williams, placed in the top 3 of their grade levels at the last meet in Long Beach. The PTSA has helped provide funding for transportation. Please see Mr. Baumgartner if you are interested in learning more about the Math Team. The next competition is at West High on Mar. 17. o Business for a Day Apps Now Available Business for a Day applications can be picked up in Room 202 through Mar. 4. Completed applications must be turned in by 3:30pm on Mar. 5. The event is open only to Freshmen and Sophomores and occurs on April 14. Business for a Day is sponsored by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce and gives students an opportunity to "job shadow" a local business. For more information, see page 34 of the Student Planner. o Sweatshirts Still Available from PTSA Now that it is getting a little cooler, maybe those red RUHS sweatshirts sold by the PTSA are sounding pretty good. The PTSA office, Room 100, is usually open every Thursday at lunch for sales. Stuffed "Sammy Sea Hawks" and cloth book covers are also available. o State PTA Recommends Yes Vote on Prop 55 The California State PTA has voted to support Proposition 55, a general obligation school facilities bond measure, which will appear on the March 2, 2004 primary election ballot. Prop 55 is a $12.3 billion bond issue to relieve overcrowding and repair older schools (Kindergarten through university level). The PTA believes that children deserve clean, safe classrooms if we expect them to succeed in school. For more on the PTA's postition, see http://www.capta.org/sections/tools/whatsnew.cfm?WhatsNewID=123. o State PTA Recommends Yes Vote on Prop 56 The State PTA has also voted to support Proposition 56, the Budget Accountability Act. Prop 56 permits the Legislature to enact budget and budget-related tax and appropriation bills with a 55% vote rather than the 2/3 vote currently required. It also mandates salary losses for the Legislature and Governor for each day the budget is late. It requires that the Legislature stay in session until the budget is passed.
