Lucia). All parents are encouraged to attend to represent the views of the high school. Remember that the school board is being forced to make additional budget adjustments mid-year since their reserves have fallen below the state mandated minimum. Typically, the elementary school issues have been heavily represented at these meetings while very few people show up to represent the high school concerns. o Evening School Board Candidate Forum on Feb. 23 The Redondo Beach PTA Council is hosting a free School Board Candidates Forum on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 7-9pm in the RUHS Library. Be sure to get this on your calendar. It is important to be informed about the candidates, especially during these lean years for school budgets. If day meetings work better for you, don't forget the forum on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at the Main Library at 11:30am. The League of Women Voters is facilitating that one and there is a cost of $15 including lunch. Call 374-3426, x184 by Feb. 1 to make reservations. o New High Tide Out The Jan. 28 edition of the student newspaper, "High Tide", came out on Friday. Borrow your student's copy to keep up on RUHS activities by reading articles such as "BeachNet suffers from lack of funds", "Only upperclassmen can change schedules for second semester", and "Construction revised to accommodate shortages." The Jan. 14 edition of the paper is available on-line at http://my.highschooljournalism.org/ca/redondobeach/ruhs/index.cfm?eid=2932. o SCROC Spring Classes Begin Tuesday Tuesday, Feb. 1, is the first day of spring classes at SCROC (Southern California Regional Occupational Center). You can take a 1pm or 4pm job training class at no cost and get high school credit. Bussing from RUHS is included. For more information, send an email to mvanert@SCROC.k12.ca.us. Visit the SCROC website at http://www.scroc.com/. o Tickets for Winter Formal On Sale Wednesday Tickets for the Winter Fantasy formal dance go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 2. The price is $35 if you have an ASB indicator on your ID card and $40 if you don't. The dance will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 8pm-midnight at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The theme of this year's dance is "Once Upon A Time" and it is sponsored by the RUHS Dance Guard. Students at all grade levels are encouraged to attend this dance. It is not necessarily a date evening; many kids come with friends. It is a dressy affair where the girls typically wear long formals or fancy dresses while the boys are a little more variable (a few wear tuxedos, most wear suits or jackets, but NO jeans or shorts). It is a school sponsored event so the dress code will be enforced so nothing too short or too low cut. If you want to bring a guest that does not attend RUHS, you need to apply for a guest pass. Photo opportunities will be available at the dance and there will be a "fabulous" dessert bar. o Hosts Needed for Mexico City Student Exchange The student exchange from Mexico City is April 18-May 1 this year and host families are being sought. The students, aged 13 to 15, will visit RUHS with their host students as well as tour Southern California attractions and present folkloric dances. Host families get the opportunity to practice Spanish as well as learn about another culture in a fun and personal way. If your student is taking a foreign language, they should have brought home a form to fill out. Contact Connie Smith at 798-8665 x2404 or csmith@bnet.org for more information. o PTSA Looking for Bingo Volunteers for March 6 The PTSA is looking for bingo volunteers for Sunday, Mar. 6. They need 5 people for each of 2 time shifts: 11am-2:30pm and 2:30- 5:30pm. Please email Marianne Carlton-Felix at mcarlton@kpmg.com if you are willing and able and let her know which time slot works for you. o SAT On-Line Prep Tips The Career Center shares these tips about free on-line resources with parents of students worrying about taking the SAT. - The UCs offer a dynamic practice program at http://www.uccp.org/. Click on "Students" then "SAT/ACT prep". Students register and can return repeatedly to practice as the program learns with them, increasing the difficulty of questions asked. - College Board also has free practice and review at its website, http://www.collegeboard.com. Click on "Prepare for the Sat". - http://www.studyhall.com/ also offers free practice tests. o RB Ed Foundation Volunteer Sign-up Meeting Wednesday The Redondo Beach Education Foundation (RBEF) is holding a Volunteer Sign-up Meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 2, from 6:30-9pm at the RBUSD District Office (1401 Inglewood Ave.). They are looking for volunteers to help with the Cruising Into Summer fundraiser event scheduled for Saturday, June 4, at the RB Performing Arts Center. At the meeting, Committee Leaders will introduce themselves and describe committee tasks. Volunteers will sign up for committees and plan subsequent meetings. The committees at this time include: Live and Silent Auctions, Decorations/Set-Up/ Tear Down, Entertainment, Event Operations, Publicity, Restaurants, and Ticket Sales. If you are unable to attend the meeting, but would like to volunteer or to receive the RBEF stay-informed email please send an email to rbef@msn.com. Check their website at http:/www.rbef.org/. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the RB Elementary School Vocal Music Program and other RBUSD programs and services.
