TABLE OF CONTENTS: o Sports o Be Sure to Read Jan. 14 Edition of High Tide o Seniors - Last Chance to Order Cap and Gown on Wednesday o RUHS PTSA Scholarship Application Available o Forum on School Board Candidates, Feb. 8 o Check School Board Candidate Statements o Feedback on BCT Bus Service o Scholarship Advice ITEMS OF INTEREST: o Sports General schedules: http://www.highschoolsports.net/snschool.asp?SelSchool=00CA90277000&B3=New+Schedule o Be Sure to Read Jan. 14 Edition of High Tide The latest edition of the "High Tide", the student newspaper, came out on Jan. 14. As usual, you can find out a lot about what is going on at the school by reading articles such as "Construction set back by weather as new problems arise", "Free Cardio Center will open Jan. 26", and "PSAT results lower because of new format". I found the in-depth spread on sleep issues and how they relate to homework particularly interesting. Ask your student to share their copy of the paper. o Seniors - Last Chance to Order Cap and Gown on Wednesday Seniors, Wednesday, Jan. 26, is your last chance to order your cap and gown. Jostens will be in Room 219 at snack only. Ring orders are also available for pick up with your final payment. o RUHS PTSA Scholarship Application Available Seniors who are current members of the RUHS PTSA and who were a member for at least one other year are eligible to apply for a RUHS PTSA scholarship. This scholarship recognizes volunteer service in the school and community; there is no grade point average restriction or requirement. Pick up an application in the Career Center or download it from http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/PTSAscholarship2004-05-1.doc. The deadline for submittal is April 16. o Forum on School Board Candidates, Feb. 8 A forum to learn more about the school board candidates is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 8, in the 2nd floor meeting room of the main library at 11:30am. The host for the forum is the Redondo Beach Coordinating Council in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce Local Election Candidate Forum. The event will also be taped by Adelphia for local viewing. The League of Women Voters is facilitating the forum. The cost is $15 including lunch. Call 374-3426, x184 by Feb. 1 to make reservations. Proceeds support the high school scholarship fund (see above). o Check School Board Candidate Statements The city has posted the statements for the school board candidates at http://www.redondo.org/news/displaynews.asp?NewsID=416. Take time to understand the positions of the various candidates to help you choose those that best match your own interests. The election is Mar. 8. There are 3 school board positions open. o Feedback on BCT Bus Service Please drop me an email with your comments about the new BCT (Beach City Transit) bus service. I plan to summarize the comments and forward them to both the city Transit Department and to a School Board member who will be giving feedback to the city at a Jan. 31 meeting. Concerns I'm hearing about are longer waits for the afternoon bus due to decreased bus size, inconsistent pick up times in the morning, and long commute times in the morning. I'm also wondering if the difference in the route from the former MTA line is affecting anyone. o Scholarship Advice Seniors that completed their Scholarship Folders by last week are automatically entered for various local scholarship opportunities. Even if you didn't get your folder in, there are still a wealth of individual scholarships out there. Ways to find out about these scholarships include: - Go to the weekly Senior meetings each Wednesday at lunch in the Career. New offerings are reviewed there. - Check the Career Center section of the on-line bulletin: http://bnet.org/ruhs/ daily. - Check the list of scholarships on the Career Center web page at http://www.bnet.org/ruhs/web3/academics/ccenter/. Their current list of scholarships, updated Jan. 7, is at http://www.bnet.org/ruhs/web3/academics/ccenter/1-07-05scholarships.html. - Check these other FREE websites recommended by the Career Center + http://fastweb.monster.com/ + http://www.scholarships.com/ + http://www.free-4u.com/ Other tidbits of advice from the Career Center: - A few scholarships are open to underclassmen, so it not too early to start checking even if you have a younger child. - Watch deadlines as they can be postmark deadlines or receipt deadlines. - Do NOT pay someone to help apply for colleges or scholarships. It is not that hard to do yourself; save your funds to pay for college itself. - Key elements most scholarships look for are good GPA, community and/or school service, demonstrated ability and/or leadership. Some are based on financial need. - Scholarships are available for students going to 2-year colleges, 4-year colleges, and vocational colleges. - Bottomline: Read the application, fulfill its requirements, submit well before the final due date, and be truthful. CONGRATULATIONS o The RUHS Roller Hockey Varsity and JV teams won their championship games. o AP Studio Art student Ryan Scarcliff had his design chosen for the City of Hermosa Beach Annual Sand & Strand Run. It will be appearing on over 600 T-shirts and 10,000 fliers. o James Anderson received a grant from Johnson & Wales University for his recipe contest entry. For more information on the contest, see http://www.jwu.edu/admiss/scholarships/sch_cont.htm. o Ronit Mukerji completed the 2004 Legal Heritage Institute and received a scholarship to recognize his spirit to seek knowledge of the law and his desire to give back to society.
