Headlines include "Hunter passes away in fatal car accident", "Teen drivers face new license restrictions", and "Williams named semifinalist in science competition". The article discussing students that go off campus for lunch, "Truancies issued by RBPD", makes for particularly interesting reading and, as always, there are articles highlighting RUHS students (robotics, dance, and gymnastics this time) as well as reviews and sports news. You really should read this paper - ask your student to see their copy. The paper is handed out by the first period teachers and extra copies are available in the library. o Career Center Needs Bingo Workers Next Sunday The Career Center is looking for adults to help work Bingo on Sunday, Jan. 22. They need 3 people for the 11:15am-2:15pm shift and 5 people for the 2:25-5:45pm shift. Please contact Karen Morris 798-8665, x2200 if you can help them out. o Winter Play Next Week/Spring Musical Auditions Coming Up Opening night for the Winter Play, "101", is Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7pm in the Auditorium. The play will be running through Saturday, Jan. 28, at 7pm plus there will be a Saturday matinee at 2pm. Sunee Foley, RUHS Drama teacher, is the author of this original production about the ups and downs of daily high school life. Ticket prices are $8 for general admission, but only $6 for students with ASB stickers, senior citizens, and children. Advance discount tickets can be purchased in the Drama Room or from any drama student. Auditions for the Spring musical, "Sugar", will be held in 2 weeks. Interested students should have already signed up. For further information, contact Ms. Foley in the Drama Room. o CAHSEE Study Class for Juniors & Seniors Starts Tuesday Juniors and Seniors who have not passed the CAHSEE were invited to attend a CAHSEE intervention class. The class will be held for 2 weeks beginning this Tuesday, Jan. 17. The classes will be taught by RUHS teachers and the schedule is as follows: - Mondays & Wednesdays: Math, Room 705, 3-4:30pm - Tuesdays & Thursdays: English, Room 701, 3-4:30pm Class sizes are limited, so priority will be given to Seniors, but additional classes might be added if there is a large turn out. The next CAHSEE for Juniors and Seniors will take place Feb. 7-8. The results from the Nov. CAHSEE were mailed home last Monday. Please contact Ms. Wesley if you have any questions. As a reminder, students must pass both the math and English portions of the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Examination) to receive a high school diploma. Sophomores will be taking the test for the first time this Spring. For more information on the test check http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/. o Albertsons/Sav-On Brings in $253 for PTSA Last Quarter A check for $252.93 was received by the PTSA from Albertsons for our participation in their Community Partners program last quarter. We now have 50 people participating - quite a jump over the last few months. Thanks to everyone that registered their card! Remember this is a really simple fundraiser. All you have to do is register your Albertsons/Sav-On Preferred Savings card online to give RUHS credit and then every time you shop (and run your card), the PTSA gets a little kickback. If you shop at Albertsons or Sav-on and haven't registered yet, get your Preferred Savings card out and then: - Go to http://www.albertsons.com/abs_inthecommunity/ - Click on the "Albertsons Community Partners" logo on the right side of the window under "See Also:" - Click on "Shoppers login or register with your preferred Savings Card first" - Enter the number on the back of your Preferred Saving Card and your phone number - Click on "My Account" on the top, right of the window - Click on "Add a Partner" - Enter our ID number: 49001001722 and click Add Partners. (Or you can enter Redondo in the Name field, "Find Partners", and then select our PTSA.) - If RUHS is your only partner, be sure 100% is entered for the percentage. You can split it with up to 4 other groups. - Click on "Update Now" to save your choice. Some people have reported problems with the Albertsons website at times, but please give it a couple of chances if necessary as this fundraiser can really add up and helps the PTSA fund field trips, Hands on Art, and lots of other little things around the school that benefit all of our kids. o Ed Foundation Looking for Silent Auction Donations from Parents The Redondo Beach Education Foundation (RBEF) is looking for donations from parents for the silent auction at their "Cruising Into Summer" gala coming up on Saturday, Mar. 25. The group would appreciate any donations, large or small, and offers the following examples from past donations as ideas: - Accumulated airline miles or time shares - Game tickets: USC, UCLA, Lakers, Dodgers, etc. - Passes or tickets to concerts, theaters, TV show tapings, etc. - Sport memorabilia such as autographed jerseys, balls, etc. - Homemade items such as quilts or jewelry - Services such as house painting, haircuts, photography - Lessons such as youth sports, dance, tutoring - Themed gift baskets such as movie night, gardening, coffee A donation form with more information and ideas is available at http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/rbef_auction_donations.doc or contact the Auction Committee at 376-6911 x44 (voice mail) or rbef@msn.com. Remember that one of the goals of RBEF this year is to raise $50,000 specifically for our high school for classroom technology. RBEF support has been critical over the last few years in keeping the elementary vocal music program and middle school sports alive. o Check Updated Scholarship List The Career Center continually updates the list of scholarships available. Most are for Seniors, but a few are open to younger students. Students should check in the Career Center for the latest news. The list, updated on Jan. 11, is also posted at http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/current_scholarships.doc. If you are an employee of Northrop Grumman, note that a scholarship was recently added that is open to your kids. o What's Going On with the School Website? I've had a lot of questions about when the online bulletin will again be posted by the school (right now it is "stuck" on Nov. 3). I'm still investigating, but so far have not been able to discern any plans to reinstitute the daily posting. o School Email Addressing Tip As you will recall the email addressing for school employees changed to use rbusd.org instead of bnet.org awhile ago. One thing to note is that the rule about using first initial and last name is STRONGLY enforced now; previously many email addresses worked with a different scheme. So, for instance, Ms. Mary Little's email address is mlittle@rbusd.org. If you don't know a teacher's first initial, try the list at http://ruhs.bnet.org/academics/facultyroster.html. This faculty list is from 2004, so it won't list the newer teachers. As always, not all teachers use the district email system, so if you don't get a response, try calling them at 798-8665. Teachers' extensions are their room numbers preceded by a 2. For instance, to call Mr. Ziegler in Room 209, you would use the extension 2209. CONGRATULATIONS o Genevieve Williams was named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, the most prestigious high school science competition in the country. She was chosen as one of 300 semifinalists from 1558 entrants representing 486 high schools in 44 states. Both Genevieve and the school will receive a $1,000 award. o Carly Correa, Logan Gantner, and Andrew Kim each earned a perfect score in last week's CAML contest.
