Mon-Fri Apr 5-9 - Spring Break, No School Sat Jun 19 - Redondo Beach Ed Foundation Gala ITEMS OF INTEREST: o Help Fight Elimination of MTA Bus Routes That Service RUHS Did you know that the MTA is planning to cut bus routes 211 and 215? These are the routes that get many of our North Redondo students to and from RUHS! Here are ways you can help fight this: - Send emails titled "2004 Service Changes" to: customerrelations@mta.net (Email is SO easy; please take a moment and dash something off NOW. It doesn't have to be long - just say these busses are important to you.) - Attend the Public Hearing on Wednesday, Mar. 10 from 6-8pm at the City of Carson Community Center on 801 East Carson Street in Carson. - Write letters to: LACMTA South Bay Sector Office Attn: March 2004 Public Hearing 680 Knox Street, Suite 150 Torrance, CA 90502 - Send Fax to: (310) 225-6011 - Email County Supervisor Don Knabe. Supervisor Knabe's website says he "is a leader in regional transportation serving on the Board of Directors for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)" so he should have some influence over the situation. http://knabe.com/dist_info/supervisor/supervisor_contact.html provides a method for sending email to Knabe. - Pass this info on to everyone that you know that uses these bus lines so they are not caught by surprise. The more opposition that the MTA receives, the more likely they are to rethink what they're doing! I've created a flyer in Word with this same info that you might want to print and pass around. You can get it at http://www.geocities.com/ruhs_email/bus.html. Written comments will only be accepted by MTA until Mar. 15, so don't delay. o Hosts Still Needed for Students in Mexico City Exchange The student exchange from Mexico City is April 12-25 this year. There are 50 students coming and, currently, about 25 (all girls) still need a host family. The age range is 13-15 and these girls are top students in their schools. Most of them do not speak much English. Information sheets on the students are available in Room 404. The sheets have a photo of the student and information like hobbies, favorite foods, family members, medical problems/ allergies, etc. Please contact Spanish teacher Connie Smith at 798-8665 x204, 293-3234 (cell) or idme@bnet.org if you can host a student or want more information. o PTSA 04/05 Board Members Needed The RUHS PTSA is looking for people willing to serve on the board next school year. Please contact Anita Avrick at anitapta@adelphia.net if you can help out. Remember that the PTSA provides funding for field trips and busses, hosts academic recognition programs, as well as sponsoring this email. Joining the PTSA board could be a good way for you to get more involved in your student's school. o Cheer Applications Available Soon It seems the Cheer Applications are not yet available, contrary to the information in the Planner. According to Michelle Bamrick, Cheer Advisor, the applications will be ready late this week or early next week (Mar. 8). So, keep checking in Room 202. o New RUHS Email Website I've created a rudimentary RUHS Email website (with a lot of help from my son) where I plan to post the current week's email as well as previous emails. The site will also be used to post non-textual items (such as the bus flyer). If you know people that would prefer to access this newsletter via a website instead of getting an email sent to them each week, please send them this link: http://geocities.com/ruhs_email/. Tell them to send me an email at leewagner.family@verizon.net if they would like to get the newsletter directly emailed to them. o Dance & Drill Competition March 20 - Want to Help? The RUHS Band and Entertainment Unit is ambitiously planning their first annual Seahawk Classic dance and drill competition. The proceeds from the competition will help finance busses and other expenses that are no longer covered by the school district. If you are interested in buying an ad in the program, want to sponsor a trophy, make a donation, or volunteer to help the day of the event (Saturday, Mar. 20), send an email to Anita Avrick at anitapta@adelphia.net or talk to Ms. Riccio in Room 3. o Bat Bot Frenzy Its name is Orange Tide. It drives autonomously, picks up large balls to carry them to another location, herds small balls to a human player, and can do a one-armed pull-up. Yes, the Beach Cities Robotics Team 294 robot was finally completed and shipped off this week. The team is now anxiously waiting to see how their robot stacks up to the competition. The first regional contest for Team 294 is scheduled for March 11-13 in Phoenix, Arizona. Their second competition will follow in Southern California at the LA Sports Arena, March 26-27 (free and open to the public). For more info on that event, see http://www.scrrf.org/2004socalregional.htm. The team is hoping to once again qualify to attend the championship competition in Atlanta on April 15-17. Team 294 always welcomes new members. For more information, contact Cheryl Miller at cheryl@bcrobotics.org or visit their website at http://www.bcrobotics.org. o Check the RUHS Sports Schedules Go to the RUHS sports page: http://bnet.org/ruhs/web3/sports/ and then click on the first item in the list, "Sports Schedules". o CIF Playoffs Wrap Up - Girls Soccer Team Loses Close One in 2nd Round Redondo battled Esperanza to a scoreless tie in their second round of the CIF playoffs, but ultimately lost in overtime 0-1.
