Mon-Fri Apr 5-9 - Spring Break, No School CLUB EVENTS: o Eliminating List of Clubs at Bottom of Email I've decided to eliminate the list of clubs from the bottom of the email as they are all seem to be pretty static at this point. If you are interested in joining a particular club, the best bet is to check http://bnet.org/ruhs/web3/bulletin/index.shtml (the on-line bulletin) to determine its meeting time and place. Clubs usually advertise for a couple of days before each meeting. o Clubs Offer Free Spanish and Math Tutoring Remember that the Spanish Club (Mondays at lunch, Room 404) and the Math Club (Wednesdays at lunch, Room 316) both offer free tutoring at their meetings. ITEMS OF INTEREST: o Check the RUHS Sports Schedules Go to the RUHS sports page: http://bnet.org/ruhs/web3/sports/ and then click on the first item in the list, "Sports Schedules". o Sports Teams in CIF Games Several of the RUHS sports teams made it into the CIF games including both the boys and girls basketball teams, the boys and girls soccer teams, and the wrestling team. The boys basketball team squeaked out a win in their 1st matchup on Friday against Orange. Our girls basketball team bested Sonora and our girls soccer team won against Flintridge Sacred Heart in games on Saturday. One place to get information on sports scores and matchups is: http://www.dailybreeze.com/prep/index.html. o New High Tide Out Feb. 20 A new "High Tide", the RUHS student newpaper, came out on Friday, Feb. 20. Check out articles such as "Juniors win chance to visit U.N. headquarters", "Casillas follows suggestions to improve school security", and "Freshmen, guests over 21 cannot attend prom". There are also 3 pages of sports highlights including a wrap up on most of the winter sports. If your student did not get a copy of the newspaper, there are usually extras in the library. o Journalism Week - See Displays in Library This week, Feb. 23-27, is Scholastic Journalism Week. The Journalism 2 class has put together interesting "then and now" displays in the library with yearbooks and student newspapers from as far back as the 1920s. o Deadline for Student Aid Application - March 2 Seniors, Mar. 2 is the deadline to submit your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. Completing this free form might provide you eligibility for Federal and State Grants, University Grants, student loans, work-study programs, and scholarships. Applications are available in the Career Center or online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. o Dance & Drill Competition March 20 - Want to Help? The RUHS Band and Entertainment Unit is ambitiously planning their first annual Seahawk Classic dance and drill competition. The proceeds from the competition will help finance busses and other expenses that are no longer covered by the school district. If you are interested in buying an ad in the program, want to sponsor a trophy, make a donation, or volunteer to help the day of the event (Saturday, Mar. 20), send an email to Anita Avrick at anitapta@adelphia.net or talk to Ms. Riccio in Room 3. o Can't Sleep - Building a Robot Beach Cities Robotics Team 294 is busily working on their 2004 robot, which will soon be challenging robots built by other high school teams throughout California and the nation. Since Jan. 10, the team has met almost every day and night to design, build and implement systems on their robot. Teams are given a common problem, a specific kit of parts to use and only six weeks to complete their work before the competitions begin. This year's challenge, "FIRST Frenzy: Raising the Bar" has robots moving autonomously for 15 seconds, then driven by human players remotely to race around a playing field passing 13 inch balls to human players who shoot the balls into fixed and moveable goals, and the robot grasping the larger balls to place in the goals. Robots are allowed to climb up stairs and hang from a 10 foot bar to get more points. New members, girls and boys, are always welcome to join the team. This sounds like a fun way to learn more about current technology and position yourself for a great career. For more information, see http://www.bcrobotics.org/ or send an email to Cheryl Miller at cheryl@bcrobotics.org. There is a free regional competition at the LA Sports Arena the weekend of Mar. 25-27. o Check the On-Line Bulletin Now http://bnet.org/ruhs/web3/bulletin/index.shtml CONGRATULATIONS o Girls State Selections Made Megan Briggs was selected as RUHS's delegate to Girls State and Stephanie Satori was selected as the alternate. There were a total of 51 girls nominated for this honor; the top 5 were interviewed. Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and is "a Project in Practical Americanism and Citizenship Training". For more on Girls State, see http://www.calegionaux.org/.
