The school intends to excuse tardies caused by the busses until the construction on 190th is complete. The school has been in contact with the Redondo Beach transit manager about the bus schedule issue. The city has attempted to improve the traffic flow during the construction by adding traffic officers at Flagler and 190th and retiming some of the key lights. The roadwork affecting the school traffic is expected to be complete in 5 weeks. o Want to be Contacted in an Emergency? Update Your Info! The attendance office needs to update emergency contact numbers in the student database. If any of your phone numbers have changed, please contact Judy Raskin at 798-8665, ext. 2017 or 2018. Alternate contact numbers - work phone numbers, cell phone numbers, as well as other authorized contacts who the school may call in an emergency (such as a local relative, local friend of the family, or a neighbor) - also need to be updated. Many parents have not updated their information since their child first registered at the high school, so the data for grades 10-12 is getting out of date. Wouldn't you hate to have the school hear a "this number is no longer in service" or "I'm sorry you must have the wrong number" message in an emergency situation? o PTSA and Career Center Looking for Bingo Volunteers The PTSA needs 3 more bingo volunteers for Sunday, Mar. 6. There are 2 time shifts: 11am-2:30pm and 2:30-5:30pm. Please email Marianne Carlton-Felix at mcarlton@kpmg.com if you can help. The Career Center needs bingo help on Sunday, Mar. 20. Contact Karen Morris at 798-8665, ext. 220 or kmorris@bnet.org to sign up. o Get Informed About School Board Candidates A source for finding out more about the school board candidates is http://www.smartvoter.org/2005/03/08/ca/la/race/144/. This site is sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Also, be sure to attend the evening School Board Candidate Forum on Feb. 23 from 7-9pm in the high school library. The Redondo Beach PTA Council is hosting this free forum. o Do You Need to Take English or Math Tests for CSU Entry? If you are planning to enroll at a California State University in the Fall, check if you need to take the English Placement Test or the Entry Level Math Test at http://www.ets.org/csu/. If you need either of these tests, register now for the Mar. 19 tests given at all CSU campus. More information is available in the Career Center. o Contact Government Officials about Education Budget on Feb. 17 Feb. 17 has been designated as a statewide PTA action day. PTA members are asked to contact the Governor and local legislators to urge support for the Proposition 98 guaranteed funding level for schools. - Call the Governor at 916-445-2841. Press the hot issue button, #5, and follow the prompts to leave a message. - Call State Senator Debra Bowen at 310-318-6994 or 916-323-6056 or send her email at senator.bowen@sen.ca.gov. Bowen's local office is right over at 2512 Artesia Blvd. - Call your State Assemblymember Mike Gordon at 310-615-3515 or 916-319-2053. You can send him email via http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a53/mailform.htm. The PTA suggests the following sample script for your call: I am a PTA member from the Redondo Union High School PTSA in Redondo Beach. I am calling to urge your support for the Proposition 98 guaranteed funding level for our schools. A strong economy requires a first class education system. The children in my schools are suffering because the present level of school funding is forcing cuts in important programs. To find out more about the PTA advocacy campaign, check http://www.capta.org/sections/advocacy/advocacy-campaign.cfm. o Profile Sheets Available for Mexico City Student Exchange Profile sheets on the visiting Mexican students are available now in Room 404. If you signed up to host, drop by to pick out a student. Over 50 students, mostly girls, from Mexico City will be coming to Redondo from April 18-May 1. So far, only 16 families have agreed to host a student. Please contact Connie Smith at 798-8665 x2404 or csmith@bnet.org if you can help. This is a great opportunity to reinforce your student's Spanish skills and learn about another culture. o Sign up for Scholarship Folder Opportunities Now Seniors who completed their Scholarship Folders should sign up in the Career Center for the following scholarships if they meet the requirements: - Annual Noble Award, $1,000, min. 2.5 GPA, athletic & school involvement, Deadline Mar. 4 - Bay Side Properties and Value Mortgage Scholarship, interest in real estate, architecture, contracting, or interior design, Deadline Mar. 4 - Re/Max All Cities Realty Scholarship, $500, plan to major or pursue a career in business, Deadline Mar. 16 - AES Redondo Beach Scholarship, $500, academic achievement, extracurricular activities, family income, Deadline Mar. 23 - Cheer for Children Scholarship, volunteer activities, help with children, interest in helping community for those less fortunate, Deadline Mar. 23 - Rotary Club of Redondo Beach Scholarship, $500, community service, financial need, academic achievement, Deadline Mar. 23 - Chevron Texaco Scholarship, $1,000, math or science major, top 10% of class, community service, Deadline Mar. 30 CONGRATULATIONS o Student Congress raised $407.25 for Save the Children, a Tsunami Relief Fund.
