There are morning and afternoon sessions and some classes include on the job training. The classes are free. This session is the first opportunity for current Sophomores to participate and the last chance for Seniors to obtain free training. See http://www.scroc.com for more information. o Phasing out of Giving HS Credits for MS Courses Starting with the current Freshmen, RBUSD is no longer granting high school credit for algebra, geometry, or Spanish classes taken in middle school. The reason for this change of policy is partially due to a state law that went into effect for the graduating class of 2003-2004 requiring students take 2 years of math at the high school level and partially due to preferences of the CA colleges. However, the classes taken in MS WILL still count toward the required UC/USC classes. For instance, if a student takes algebra in 8th grade and then geometry and advanced algebra in HS, they will have fulfilled the UC requirement to take 3 math classes. If you have questions on the new policy, please contact Shannon Rodriguez at srodriguez@bnet.org or 798-8665. Discussion on whether this policy change was adequately communicated to parents, students, and teachers will take place at the school board meeting on Tuesday, Apr. 26, at 6:30pm at the District Office. If this issue is a concern for you, RUHS parent Paul Buller would like to hear from you at BullerCompany@adelphia.net, 543-5059, or 218-9256 (cell). o Whooping Cough Warning There has been a case of pertussis (whooping cough) at RUHS in the past month. The school has prepared a letter with more information on pertussis. Your student should have received a copy of the letter or see http://bnet.org/ruhs/Whooping Cough Letter.doc. Bottom line, any child who comes to school with a severe unexplained cough may be sent home from school to get a doctor's note in order to return to school. o Juniors: SAT and ACT Registration Deadlines Coming up Soon Juniors should take the SAT and ACT to assure they are in position to apply for 4-year colleges and scholarships in the Fall. The regular registration deadline for the June 4 SAT is April 29. The regular registration deadline for the June 11 ACT is May 6. Register early to avoid late fees and have a good choice of test centers. Paper application forms are in the Career Center or apply online at http://www.collegeboard.com for the SAT or http://www.act.org for the ACT. o PTSA Duck Race in June - Get Your Lucky Duck Now The PTSA's 6th annual Duck Race is coming up in June, so be sure to sign up for your Lucky Duck ASAP. Ducks cost $5 each and all proceeds go into this year's scholarship fund. The form is available at http://ruhs.bnet.org/registration/DuckRace.pdf or you can pick one up in the office. The PTSA is looking for prize donations for the duck raffle (movie tickets, baskets of goodies, gift certificates, etc.). If you have any questions or are willing to donate a prize, please contact Patty Wacks at wacksfamwest@adelphia.net. o 100th Celebration News RUHS's upcoming 100th celebration got some good press coverage this week in the "Easy Reader" with two different stories on the event. If you don't have a paper copy, check the news on-line at http://easyreader.hermosawave.net/news2002/default.asp. Scroll down to the Redondo Beach section and then click on the stories. Also, be sure to keep up with all the events planned for the week of June 22-26 at the committee's website: http://www.ruhsalumni.org/load.php?vs=alumEvents&vb=celeb100. o Seniors: Get Your Grad Night Tickets Now Grad Night starts June 23 at 10pm and runs until the next morning at 6am. This is a super event for graduating seniors - it includes all the soft drinks and food you want, a rock wall, 30 arcade games with unlimited use, henna tattoos, hair designs for both boys and girls, a hypnotist, palm reading, blackjack plus make your own music video and dancing. Below are a couple of items to consider: - Birney Elementary is looking for responsible high school student volunteers to help with their carnival on Saturday, May 7.
