Civil War Today

In this section, we'll have books that deal with the ongoing controversies of the Civil War today, and the interpretations of modern historians on the war.

Rufus Recommends:
1. Confederates in the Attic, by Tony Horwitz....  Mr. Horwitz takes the reader into the world of the "hard core" re-enactors.  In travelling the country he finds what the Civil War means today to people all over the South.  It's a great book!
2.
Lee Considered, by Alan Nolan....BLASPHEMY!:)  Lee wasn't perfect, in fact he was quite imperfect.  Should be read by every Civil War fan.
3.
Gettysburg, by Ken Gramm....Gives a good narrative of the battle while mixing in a series of questions about modern America.  Excellent!
4.
Destructive War, by Charles Royster....Chronicles the changing nature of the Civil War as it was fought, becoming more and more of a "modern" war.
5.
Pickett's Charge, by Carol Reardon....Traces the way the charge is seen by Southerners ever since the event.

Also:
For Cause and Comrades, by James McPherson....Studies the question of why the Civil War soldiers fought.
Embattled Courage, by Gerald Linderman....How and why did the soldiers of that war put up with the conditions they encountered.
The Civil War in Popular Culture, by Jim Cullen....Shows how the Civil War is still with us, in the movies, in popular music, etc.
Ken Burns's Civil War, edited by, Robert Toplin....Is a series of essays by historians on the landmark PBS series produced by Ken Burns.
The Confederate War, by Gary Gallagher....Discusses the causes of the downfall of the Confederacy.
The Class of 1846, By John C. Waugh....A very readable group biography of the West Point class of 1846.....Stonewall Jackson, George McClellan, George Pickett and other Civil War notables.

No rejects here!  This stuff is all opinions.:)
