The Dunker Church

The battle of Antietam was actualy three separate battles.  The first phase of McClellan's attack was aimed toward this church, which still stands across the road from the modern Visitor's center today.  It was used at the time by a local German pacifist sect called the Dunkers.  The high ground the church stands on was what the Union troops charged towards.  They never made it.  The woodlots and fields around the church became covered with the dead and wounded of both armies.
