Burnside's Bridge |

This bridge across the Antietam was the sight of the final phase of the battle. Union General Ambrose Burnside was supposed to cross his men and attack the southern end of Lee's line. It took hours despite the fact that the heights where dad took this picture from were lightly defended. Lee had sent most of the men to defend other parts of the field. Despite a ford, not far away, Burside fixated on this bridge and the Rebel troops up on that hill were able to hold off much larger numbers for most of the day.. |
