The Basics of
Colour  Genetics
White Miniature Schnauzers
White Miniature Schnauzers are caused by the action of two loci....The  "E" series, and the "C" series.  All Black, Black/Silver and Salt/Pepper Minis "must": carry at least one "E".  The double "ee" recessive removes the Black pigment from the coat.  What is left without the Black pigment?    This is determined by the "C" series.
CC  -  Deep Red
C ch - Medium Red
cch  cch- Wheaten to Cream
cch ce - Cream to Off White
ce ce - "Ice" White or "Paper"  White

This explanation of the genetic make-up of whites differs from the late Anne Eskrigge's.  She believed Whites were created by a gene in the "S" series that she called "Swh".  She came tot his conclusion because of a case where a Salt/Pepper male produced Whites from one bitch and parti-colours from another.  If her theory were correct, however, then a White bred to a Parti-colour would produce either all Parti-colours or some Whites, "IF" the Parti was a carrier.  However, in some recent crosses personally known to me, the colours produced by a White   X   Parti-colour, were "self' coloured,  i.e. , Salt/Pepper, Blacks, Black/Silvers.  This is proof positive that White is NOT a gene on the "S" series.
Therefore, two "Paper"  or  "Ice"  Whites produce ONLY  "Paper or Ice " Whites.  When a White is bred to a self-coloured cog, AND the self-coloured dog does not carry for White, the colours of the pups will be determined by what both parents are carrying at the "A" locus.

For example:
Sire: A  Salt/Pepper  "carrying for Black/Silver
genetic formula of: BB  cch  ce  DD  EE  Gg  SS  tt
Dam: A White
genetic formula of:  awat  BB  cece  DD  ee  Gg  SS  tt
Puppies would be S/P and B/S in the theoretical 3 - 1 ratio.  And White to Parti-colour produces self-coloured puppies according tot he parents  "A": series .
Theoretically, a White could carry for Parti, and a Parti could carry for White, and if these two bred, there would be Whites, Parties, and Self-coloured pups...

Now, the Black Mini can carry for S/P, B/S or both.  And a Black bred to any other colour will produce some blacks.  ONLY Blacks witht he genetic formulation  "AsAs"  are  PURE  BLACKS and produce ONLY Black, "unless" both parents carry for White or Parti-colour......And it should go without saying, that Blacks carrying for White can certainly produce White upon meeting a "like" recessive....Blacks are difficult to understand and even more difficult to breed.  Of course, there is nothing as beautiful as a "PURE BLACK", however, they are a "rare' find because of so much colour crossing being done, and due to the "G" (graying gene), most Blacks do NOT retain their "Jet Black" colour.   A Mini with the "As" at the locus, will, when bred to a S/P or B/S produce BLACKS.  These are what some call a "synthetic" Black.  But there is nothing synthetic about them at all...It is the action of the "As" recombination with the "E" from the other parent that creates  "BLACK"....which is the same genetic combination of the other blacks.

So, then the Red, Wheaten, Cream, and White Miniature Schnauzers are the ONLY colours that are NOT Black, but that produce Black.
