Leeds United
| Leeds United are currently languishing in the second tier of English football having been one of the greatest sides in the world back in the early seventies, won the old first division in 1992 and were Champions League semi-finalists in 2001. As Leeds failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season, by 1 point (a Wes Brown own goal at Elland Road was ruled out, wrongly, for offside and were it given would have awarded Leeds the win, 2 more points and a place in the Champions League), they had to settle for a UEFA cup place which financially ruined Leeds and since that moment they were unable to turn around the massive debt. The following three seasons Leeds United were forced to sell their best players (Nigel Martyn, Paul Robinson, Ian Harte, Danny Mills, Jon Woodgate, Dominic Matteo, Rio Ferdinand, Oliver Dacourt, Lee Bowyer, Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, James Milner, Alan Smith, Robbie Keane, Alan Smith) to fight off the debt. Unfortunately Leeds United hit rock bottom when they eventually lost their battle to avoid the drop and were relegated on 2nd May 2004. The following season (2004-05) was spent attempting to hold the club afloat until Ken Bates bought out the club and took the debts upon himself. Leeds are now for the first time in four years starting to look forward with the hope and possibility of promotion in the 2005-06 season. |
