Why If you ask me “Why are we here?” I will say “I don’t know.” But if you ask me “Why are we here, at this restaurant, eating spaghetti and drinking cold water and facing each other’s faces, alone in a crowded restaurant, ignoring the others around us?” I will say, “Because I can imagine the future. I can imagine us marrying and living happily together and watching the summer rain come over the little lakes in Germany. We could live together for years and in the end, in our old age, we could sit in the dark, by a fire, you could be knitting, and I could be whittling, or you could be reading, and I could be reading too— if I spend enough time with you maybe you’ll grow accustomed enough to my prescence that you will desire it. And gradually, the future that I imagined will begin to occur.” Back |
