Whether I believe in God or not is quite a moot point. The question is, even if every word in the bible is the true "Word of God", is this really a diety I would choose to worship and look up to?
When most people evaluate the stories of the christian bible they are paying attention to the actions of and outcomes for the humans in the story. I read them watching for what God is said to have said and done about each particular situation. In most cases I see a God that is not someone I'd look up to. For instance, the story of Abraham - the story claims that he was God's faithful servant. God told Abraham to take his son Issac to the altar and slay him as a burnt offering, then at the last minute he said - no, it was just a test. That story doesn't demonstrate Abraham's great faith and love of his God. In my opinion that sounds like a cruel God on an ego trip.
Then there is the story of Job. Satan is looking for trouble and God tells him to do what he will to Job, he will not curse me. Then when Job doesn't break, Satan says well of course you've given him all this stuff....So God takes everything Job has and tells Satan to try again. And Job is miserable but never blames God. But I just see God bragging - Nyah Nyah Nyah my servants are better than your servants.
When I was growing up, my parents didn't attend church. I went with my grandmother every now and then, but not all that often.
In high school I started going, because a good friend of mine HAD to go (a wicked step-father type of thing)...so I went as moral support. Then another good friend was in a car wreck where another friend of ours was killed. He decided to enter the ministry and got alot of flak from some of our friends about being a hypocrite. Again I tried to be moral support and this is when I began to study the bible in earnest.
