DUTCH LENINGRAD    A85

Peake GM   v  Kev-Blitz Match

Game 19

White   Black

Kev-Blitz  - GMP

0:1 (ICC 10 15 u) 25/10/2003

1. d4 c6 2. c4

[2. e4 then g6 Modern Defence or d5 Caro Kann]

2... f5

is a Dutch, having avoided Staunton Gambit. The set up is g6, Bg7, d6 with a Leningrad Dutch.

3. Bg5 Kev plays Bg5 against the Dutch. ..g6

I think it's best to just ignore the bishop and play a Leningrad. This position has occurred 7 times and scored 71% for Black.

4. e3 Bg7

5. Bd3 Qb6 The Queen normally belongs on c7, but this hits a soft spot.

6. Qc2 Na6 This is easily countered, Black should play c5 ! I now realise.

7. a3 d6

Here c5 ! is again best, I did consider it without properly analysing it.

8. Nc3 Nf6 Instead e5 immediately looks possible, but I was uneasy about my lack of development.

9. Nge2 O-O Instead e5 possible, but I prefer castling before such action in the centre.

10. O-O Bd7 Black's Knight now looks misplaced. White can now get an advantage by c5 ! 11. Rab1 Positional, but pussy footing as Kev is prone to be.

[11. c5 Qc7 12. Bf4 Be6˛]

11... Qc7 Back to where the Queen belongs. Black would be better with his Q-side minors at home and a pawn on e5.

12. Bf4? A bad move that hands Black the advantage. Now the e5 thematic pawn lever break can be made with gain of tempo.

[12. e4 As I have told Kev many times if you can get e4 in in the Dutch (other things being equal) you are winning. e6 13. b4˛]

12... e5

13. de de

14. Bg5?? A blunder now White has nothing.

[14. Bg3 Of course as the Pawn is pinned. Nc5µ]

14... e4

15. Nxe4 ? compounds his error. Bxe4 had to be played. fe

16. Bxe4 Nxe4

17. Qxe4 Bf5 Strange how when things go wrong they really collapse. Can you believe how White's position has fallen apart from move 12 ?

18. Qh4 Bxb1

19. Nd4 Desperation, but there's nothing. Bf5

20. g4 I now realised that I could play Be4 as White cannot play Ne6 and Nxf8

....Be4

21. Ne6 Qf7

22. Nxf8 Qf3 ..Because of this move which mates.

23. Qxh7 Kxf8

24. Be7 Kf7

White resigns
