MODERN  BENONI

Peake GM   v  Kev-Blitz Match

White  Black

Kev-Blitz – GMP

Game 13

0:1

ICC  6  17   3/ 7/2003

1. d4 g6 I thought I would  go for a Modern Benoni through a tortuous route for a bit of fun.

2. c4 Nf6

3. Nc3 c5

4. d5

[4. Nf3 could go into an English symmetrical but finish as an Accelerated Dragon ! Such are the delights of chess transpositions !]

4... e6

5. e4 d6 The e-pawn needs to be tamed. We're in a King's Indian - but we are still heading for a Modern Benoni !!

6. f4 An interesting, aggressive move, though not really Kev's style I would have thought. White's position is very "drafty". ...Bg7

7. Rb1 ?  Completely out of sync with the f4 move. What is he doing ??

[7. Nf3 exd5 8. cxd5 O-O is good old Modern Benoni, where Black has avoided Bb5 check lines. One example of Tal's magic ...> 9. Be2 Re8 10. e5 dxe5 11. fxe5 Ng4 12. e6 fxe6 13. O-O exd5 14. Nxd5 Be6 15. Bc4 Ne5 16. Bg5 Nxf3 17. Qxf3 Qxg5 18. Rae1 Rf8 19. Rxe6 Bd4 20. Kh1 Rxf3 21. Re8 Kg7 22. Rxf3 Qc1 23. Bf1 Nc6 24. Rxa8 Ne5 25. Rff8 Ng4 26. Rf3 Nf2 27. Kg1 Ne4 0-1, Niemela Ilmari - Tal Mikhail, Riga 1959 It [...] (28. Kh1 Ng3 29. hxg3 Qh6#)]

7... exd5

8. cxd5

[8. exd5 White's position is even more drafty !]

8... O-O

9. Nf3 Re8 White is under big pressure because of his time - wasting Rb1 move

10. Bd3 Tal said "Imagine a small room that is full of blown up   balloons all of different sizes. On the balloons are the   words "tactical" and "explosions" . Imagine a man   coming into that room with a white hot poker in each   hand. He rushes at the balloons swinging his arms. On  one poker is the word "Modern" and on the other   "Benoni"!!"

10... Nxe4 One tactical explosion just went off !

11. O-O ! Best - Now White has chances of some play for the pawn.

[11. Nxe4 f5;

11. Bxe4 f5 12. Ng5 fxe4 13. Ngxe4? Bf5 etc.]

11... Nxc3

12. bxc3 Bxc3 Might as well - otherwise c4 Bb2 etc.

13. Bb2

[13. f5 had to be played here with chances of an attack for the two pawns. Black is still undeveloped. Bf6 14. Qc2 Re7 15. Bg5 Nd7µ]

13... Bxb2

14. Rxb2 b6 ?! frees the bishop, and allows Bb7 attacking the d-pawn - but dubious as it is too slow.

15. Re2

[15. f5 was still the best chance.]

15... Rxe2

16. Qxe2 Bb7

17. Be4

[17. Bc4 a6]

17... Qe7 with the unpleasant threat of f5

18. Qc2 f5

19. Bxf5 Desperation to try to get at Black's King, but White doesn't have enough pieces.

[19. Bd3 Qe3 20. Kh1 Ba6 21. Rd1 Bxd3 22. Rxd3 Qe4]

19... gxf5

20. Qxf5 Nd7

21. Re1 Qf7

22. Qg5 Qg6

23. Qe7

[23. Re7 Rd8]

23... Bxd5

24. Qg5 with Queens off  White might as well resign.

[24. Qxd7 Bxf3 gets White nowhere.]

24... Qxg5

25. Nxg5 h6

26. Nh3 Bxa2 Now is a good time for White to resign !

27. Rd1 d5

28. Nf2 a5

29. Rd2 Bb3

30. Ng4 a4   Why waste time defending the irrelevant h pawn ?

31. Nxh6 Kh7

32. Nf5 a3

33. Rd3 a2

34. Rh3 Kg6

35. Ne7 Kf6

36. Nxd5 Bxd5

White resigns

[0:1]

Another Modern Benoni for the collection !
