1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5 3. dxe5 Ng4

4. e3   So simple - yet so strong. Threatens the Knight, so Black has to play Nxe5. The pawn structure with the pawn on e3 would let Black bite on granite if he comes to c5 with his bishop. If he comes to b4 then White plays Bd2 and a3. Then Black has to give up his black squared bishop. White's bishop emerges very well placed at c3 (or b2) on the a1 to h8 diagonal. If Black plays his Bishop to e7, this is passive. Fianchettoeing is possibly best, though this is not as good as the Sicilian Dragon where Black has a pawn on e7 and an open c-file. White plays his QN to c3 to control d5 the key square. He will often play his KN to h3 then f4 with the same idea. Sometimes he castles Q-side and attacks on the K-side - see Colin Crouch's game. White's KB will probably start at e2 then switch to d3 or f3 later.

Nxe5

[4... Bb4 5. Bd2 Bxd2 6. Qxd2 as the QN belongs on c3, and the Q+R can bear down the d-file. Nxe5 7. Nh3 d6
