Costs

Everyone eventually asks, "How much did it cost?".  It is a relatively simple question to answer.  The problem is, the question to which most people really want to know the answer is "How much would it cost me?".  That is impossible to answer.  The reason is that there are a number of variables that factor heavily into determining the cost of an extended trip:

  • Style of travel.  1st class, budget, backpack, student, etc
  • Modes of transportation
  • Season.  High tourist, straddle, low
  • Flexibility of the traveller: Fixed itenerary, moderately flexible, infinitely flexible.
  • Willingness to share: food, accomodations, travel goods
  • Exchange rates for the funding currency

Our style of travel could be called "budget with standards".  What I mean by that is that we were sensitive to costs all along the way,  we had certain minimum criteria for lodging that we always sought.  This includes clean lockable accommodations, toilet and bath in the room (a must with 2 young kids and a rule we never broke), and in lodging cooking facilities (kitchenette or the like).  Sometimes, for overnight short term accommodations we did not have cooking facilities in the room.  But we typically ate some in the room anyway.  We were very flexible in both schedule and places to visit.  Our only near fixed constraints were the primary cities on our RTW airline tickets, and completing the trip in one year.
While we travelled, the US dollar was relatively strong, and gathered steam during the year.

Our total costs could be broken down into several categories

Ramp up - preparing, researching, travel insurance, shots, travel gear and clothing, renting the house, etc.
We purchased the RTW tickets from United Airlines in the US.  United is part of the Star Alliance.  We purchased the RWSTAR1 ticket package, allowing us to travel up to 28,000 miles within a one year period.  Total ticket cost wqas US$10,812 for 2 adults and 2 children.  Kids tickets were 66% the cost of adults.

The trip - all costs incurred while travelling.  Travel in Mexico south east asian, and pacific countries, to include Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, were right at about $100/day.  In Europe, to include Turkey, Greece, Germany, Italy, France, and Spain, it was more expensive, about $133/day.  Note that long haul travel is not included in these numbers, but all local transport (car rental, short flights, etc) is included.

Ramp down - Insurance, food, lodging, etc until income kicks back in.
